Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde time, predictably. Now that the game isn’t in prime time, the Redskins offense will look much better but there is no reason to believe the defense will play much better, especially against the run. If the game remains close, Dallas OL will expose the front seven and time of possession will be lopsided again. In a game of matchups, this one is closer than Pittsburgh but Washington still loses the matchups of the scrimmage line.

Here’s the percentages I put on this game:

35% Redskins by at least aTD
14% Redskins by less than a TD
41% Cowboys by less than a TD
10% Cowboys by at least a TD

The Redskins should win this going away but for whatever reason Dallas has ALWAYS had our number since the beginning of the rivalry. EFF Dallas!

No real surprise on the inactives: Spaight and Reyes out with injury, Sudfeld, Kouandjio, Ross, Lanier, and Fuller.

Lanier obviously made the team over 5th round pick Ioannidis. So of the 7 inactives, that’s four young players out of the last two draft classes. Those guys are therefore on the team because of their future potential and are not seen as ready for action.

I have the football gods favoring the Redskins today 28-17. IMO the Redskins are due a little football luck and have the defense scoring a early TD followed by Cousins being hot early and scoring TD’s and not settling for field goals. If the Redskins start out by making the same kind of mistakes this week as last, this game could become a low scoring dog fight that favors the Dallas running game. Redskins should be very unhappy at getting their butts kicked last week. I hope that can take it out on the Cowboys today.

I have the Redskins winning by more than a TD and Cousins going for 315 Yards, 3TD, 1 INT

The Redskins have too many weapons on offense to stay out of the end-zone this week. I have Vernon Davis scoring a TD today. Matt Jones also looks halfway competent with around 79 yards on the ground and 25 yards in the air for over 100 all purpose yards.

Skins look like a different team today.

    Redskins: 27
    Dallas: 17

JayGruden smiles and acts like he is all great in the press conference.

I kind of wish they would get Paul involved in the game plan more. But then, if they did, that’s taking the ball from some other pretty dynamic playmakers. So I get it.

I hate that it seems like I’m piling on but this team is just weak. Cousins missed several throws again but, wow, he lost the game with that interception. That was another of many awful INT’s he seems so prone to. Just horrible. And penalties again played a huge role.

You are not piling on, in fact I would say you were a little too nice. The Cowboys were giving this game away and no one stepped up to take it. This team just can not seem to finish. The big plays were sitting out there to be made, 3 deep pass plays that should have been easy TD’s, throwing late over the middle from the 5 yard line when you could have run and had a good shot of 4th and goal from the 2, three fade routes to a rookie in the Red Zone when you have Reed, D-Jax, Garcon & Davis, a total of 13 running plays in a close game when your QB just doesn’t have it, Dumb penalties at just the wrong time, clock management not running a play before the two minute warning, a rookie QB you can not force into mistakes, allowing a RB you let go get the winning TD, your own players yelling at each other and YOUR fans cheering for a COWBOY AT HOME! How bad of a performance must be seen before this head coach gets mad. His post game presser sounded like he had just lost a preseason game on the road to last years Super Bowl winner. No my friend, you were not piling on at all.

When you are piling on the facts then there is nothing to feel guilty about. I’m not sure what this team is at this point. I’m just glad right now we didn’t follow the advise of many ill-informed fans by signing Cousins to a long term deal. Maybe I’m wrong later in the season but here expensed a lot of time and words justifying Couisns as a franchise QB. They are suddenly quite for some reason

I thought we should have signed him long term and don’t think I was ill-informed in thinking that way. Sure looks like the wrong call now but I can admit that and it’s only week two. Half of the armchair GMs on here would’ve kept Rob and drafted randy Gregory in the first. They are suddenly talking about how they know more now without rehashing all the wrong choices they would’ve made.

I also thought we should’ve signed Cousins long term. I didn’t see how he could regress given a full off season as #1 and additional weapons. He has missed to many wide open throws and made bad decisions. I also would like to say that I supported the Doctson pick, thinking we would get a dline man in the 2nd. The thing is nearly everyone identified C dline and possibly LG as needs and they were not addressed. Norman appears to be the real deal and I was luke warm on the signing because I thought it was more of a luxury signing when other needs should’ve been addressed. Our struggles to run and stop the run were very easily predictable. That happened last year and we’re not addressed. I was never a fan of Barry and think/hope he will not last the season. I’m glad RJF called him out but there again his vanilla d is predictable, something needs to change. I hope our Team watches this game and pukes and vows to never let it happen again. Cousins bad throws left at least 3 tds off the board. The int in that situation was just horrible. If its incomplete and we kick the the field goal that hail mary turns into a fg attempt. The wr’s, te’so and Norman are the only ones pulling their weight right now. Cousins is not earning his check and needs to play better.

    • Trey Gregory - Sep 19, 2016 at 2:56 AM

It’s good to see people putting the blame where it belongs. Everyone else didn’t play perfect, but no team does. Simply put: if Cousins plays better, we win.

I question not trying to run the ball in from the 5 when Jones was actually producing (or just not running slightly more in general). I question calling three fades in the red zone when they clearly weren’t working (twice to a rookie who missed the entire training camp). I question our defensive strategy. But despite all of that, if Cousins just plays as we’ve seen him play then we win. Probably by 2-3 TDs.

The only good news I can think of is that if Cousins can fix himself then we should win our fare share of the remaining games. The team as a whole didn’t play all that bad today. And I think some of the young guys, and some current non-starters, are about to break out and start contributing more.

The not attempting at least one run from the 5 is in inexplicable to me. Our run game was decent yesterday and at that point it was easy to see Cousins was off. Let’s hope we can turn this around.

100% agree. Especially with running the ball there. THAT is the situation where you run the ball even if’s not your strength. The worst LIKELY scenario is a holding call that backs you up but you don’t lose the down. Then you can go to the pass. The more likely scenario is that you gain a yard or two and take time off the clock. Apparently the fade worked great in practice for it to be called as much as it was. Lastly and more importantly, Cousins is in regression. He has to get it fixed and quickly because he is losing the trust of his teammates and trust of his coaches. If he plays like he can; he gets the trust of his teammates back but the game plan can easily change to something more conservative if he loses the trust of his coaches. 4:45 left in the game and a run on the first play after the interception. A lot of damage would’ve been erased with a comeback drive but the plays called seemed to indicate that the coaches had lost confidence.

Cousins is a mid range QB and a complete dumb a.s.s for thinking he was worth a bigger contract. He will be kicking himself for not signing that 16 – 17 mil a year deal. Dude could be off the team next season.
I have already seen enough of Cousins and hope that Colt McCoy at least begins to come into the conversation at some point. Definitely, facing 0 -3 in the face heading to a place where we typically loose. I think Cousins will throw at least another 2 picks next week.

We seem to be pretty lacking at ILB, too. O.K. if they want to use one spot on the smart QB of the defense who can cover some.

I never say “I told you so”, but I did tell you so. For some reason I have a hard time understanding, this team is now completely off kilter. The defense is listless, with the exception of Norman and Cravens, and can’t stop the run or rush the passer, which is not a huge surprise. But the QB has also dropped off a cliff, the play calling is awful and we’re completely off balance running the ball again. We came close against a pretty weak team at home, had multiple chances to close out and failed miserably.
Disappointing, but you don;t go from terrible to great in one week. This result does not surprise me after the Pittsburgh game. I still hope they can turn it around, but the odds of reaching the playoffs now are ca 12%. If we lose to the Giants next Sunday, which we probably will, the odds will be approximately 0,01%.

This sure was a fun season…

    • Trey Gregory - Sep 19, 2016 at 2:41 AM

I don’t feel like defending this team much right now. But let’s be fair in our criticism. The defense didn’t play terribly today. You say we can’t rush the passer but we got at least 2 sacks today, maybe 3 (it’s all kind of a blur and I’ll just get nauseous if I go look up stats.) Kerrigan is on pace for 16+ sacks! Trent Murphy was in position to have about 3 sacks but Dak wiggled away. They’re not getting great pressure, but it’s there. The big issues are all along the middle of the D. The sooner Cravens can play the majority of snaps the better. The sooner Fuller can come in the better. And hopefully Hall gets this all figured out quick because we desperately need him to but you can see the potential with him.

The point I meant to make is that I blame one person and one person only for this loss. If Cousins played like he did last year we win this game by 2-3 TDs easy. Elliot and “the best O-line in football” did not run all over us like they should have; our receivers and TEs look amazing; Matt Jones was actually running kind of well today; protection held up outside of Kory; Norman is playing out of his mind; and I’ll say it again: Murphy looks like a nickel DE we who needs to see the field more. A lot went right today but Cousins was off and we lost because of that and that alone. There were other bad players and mistakes but all could have been overcome if Cousins plays better.

Yeah but that’s the problem. He’s uncomfortable because DCs have figured out our offense. All year long teams are going to drop back in coverage and wait for Cousins to make a bad decision, which he probably will. Last year they tried blitzing him, a typical panic reaction to a new QB. Now they don’t bother because that isn’t his weakness. Throwing into soft coverage is, and always was. He either works through this and becomes a potential starter, for someone if not us, or he fails and is on a bench or unemployed nest year.
Meanwhile, Dak had all day to throw on most snaps. The pressure was irregular, although it picked up in the second half. And we can not stop the run consistently. it does no good to stuff a run on first and let someone run for 12 yards on second.

I think the truth is that Cousins simply doesn’t have a good feel for where to place passes right now. Either he can’t anticipate receiver routes or he’s unsure of the coverage so he hesitates. I mean almost all his passes were either over or underthrown. The only positive if he fails to work through these problems, if he can at all, is that he is cheap and basically a band aid after the RGIII fiasco anyway. He’s getting paid this year, but only because he did alright last year and because the last guy was such a failure. There is still no need to overdo expectations for him. It’s not our money and we know who he isL borderline starter. He could sink or swim this year and we really don’t know which will be the case. Personally I still think he’ll work it out. Whether that will save the season or whether Gruden is still the HC at that point I have no idea. Probably not.

Murphy did look good and if Cousins makes any one of the throws to wide open recievers, Crowder, deep to DeSean or an im stride throw to Doctson we score a td on those throws. Even if he just didn’t throw the int into quadruple coverage we probably win. This is a team we should’ve beat especially at home. It’s crazy to think with all those misses on big throws he still had over 350 yards passing, our recievers and te’s are that good.

You’re spot on. Contrary to fans’ opinions, the offense has not been figured out but there is a game plan to defend Cousins. He’s got plays open immediately — designed so — that he is inexplicably missing. Why is he pressing? Is he reading the clippings? Take the short stuff, Kirk! And take it right away. He’s playing similarly to Griffin, missing the immediate play hoping for the bigger play.

Sacks and QB hurries? Our guys penetrated against the best O-line in football in big moments. Not the whole game. Nobody is going to mistake them for Denver. But Kerrigan, Smith, Baker, and Murphy all got pressure and either got a sack or got damn close. And I think QB pressures are a very underrated stat so close counts to me in this case.

I didn’t see it that way. I saw it as an anomaly if he was pressured. I know they had sacks but on almost all of his dropbacks, Preston had all the time he wanted. A couple of his sacks were just a result of him waiting too long.
