CSN: Jackson has plenty of reasons to participate in Redskins’ workouts

Jackson OTAs bubble

Last year DeSean Jackson’s participation in the Redskins’ offseason program was spotty at best. This year he has plenty of incentive to find his way to Redskins Park. Tandler explains on CSNmidatlantic.com.

Last year it was very apparent that he missed OTAs includingbhus early exit based on a hamstring pull. He needs to be working with Kirk to develop the next level of timing and chemistry required for success.

He needs to get those hammys in order. If he goes through another injury prone season, I dont see us hanging on to him after the season.

Good piece. Rich, do you know if the roster bonus this year includes injury? It appears from the previous years, that he simply needs to be on the 53 to get the roster bonus but I imagine that it is paid per game week.

Personally, I can’t see Jackson missing OTAs this year as it is basically throwing away a game check.

To those that doubt Jackson’s effectiveness, here’s a stat ripped from John Keim’s piece:

“Player on the rise: Tight end Jordan Reed. You could say he’s already there, but he really didn’t start showing all he could do until late in the year. In the first nine games he averaged 9.43 yards per catch; in the final seven it was 12.73…”

With Dana Carvey’s church lady voice, “Could it be…(Jackson)?

Personally, I hope he has a monster season where the Redskins simply can’t afford him next year. Then the Redskins are forced to pay Cousins, Reed, and Galette letting DeSean move on.

I hope he has a monster year for us as well. That wouldnt price him out of our range however. He’ll be on the wrong side of 30, no ones signing him to a massive contract. Well, on second thought, lol this is the NFL. Not every team is ran in a smart fashion. Either way, I think we move on regardless.

Yeah, I think we move on from him no matter how the season unfolds — 30+ speed guy — it might as well be a monster year.

And then we get a 3rd round comp pick for losing him.

That would be sweet. He’d also have to get a monster deal. The lowest contract getting a 3rd round comp pick this year was the Sean Smith deal averaging $9.25M/year. So maybe we get a fourth but 3rd is certainly in the realm of possibility — unless the dummy year that gets voided blows this up.

Not so sure about getting a pick if we lose him during free agency. Picks are handed out when some other team signs your original draft picks, not players you signed via free agency.

I am trying to get clarified if it is a standard per-game roster bonus, paid if he is on the active 46, or for being on the 53 (i.e. not on IR).

Thank you. From me and the other non-social media types. (Maybe it’s just me.)

Murphy “looking big and working with d-line” is interesting.

Makes sense to me. We have Kerrigan, Galette, and now Preston Smith ahead of him on the chart.

I don’t know if he’s a natural fit as a 3-4 DE, but if he wants the snaps, he can make himself into one.

Would like to see a little Galette, Preston Smith, duo in there for a bit. Kerrigans play turned me off a little last season. Especially given the hefty contract.

        • John - Apr 19, 2016 at 8:07 AM

You’ll probably see Preston down with his hand in the ground at right end in a 4 man front with Galette to his right on passing downs. That or they’ll shift Preston around in the 4 man line to take advantage of mismatches.
