NTK: The Redskins week that was—Stadium drawings achieve intended effect

Mar 19, 2016, 5:48 AM EDT

Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, March 19, 40 days before the NFL Draft.

The Redskins week that was

With the bulk of the Redskins’ free agency action consisting of re-signing their own players, readers were interested in a diverse variety of topics including, of course, quarterbacks.

Report: Another team on the West Coast targeting RG3—I’ll save you a click here—the West Coast team was the Los Angeles Rams. The bigger point here is that we’re coming up on two weeks since Griffin was let go and he has had very limited interest. His one visit, which was to the Jets, was more for show than anything else. The team wanted to send a message to Ryan Fitzpatrick that they were exploring alternatives and Griffin’s camp wanted to generate some buzz and make it look like there was some interest in the player. It didn’t seem to work on either count and Fitzpatrick remains unsigned and Griffin has had no other visits. There is still plenty of time for him to get a job but his continued presence on the market in a league with a severe shortage of qualified quarterbacks is telling.

McCoy’s pay now fits his role—Colt McCoy was going to be the third-string quarterback when he signed each of his first two one-year contracts with the Redskins. But in 2014 he ended up starting over Griffin and Kirk Cousins when both of them were healthy and last year the deck was shuffled with Cousins becoming the starter and Griffin going to third string. This year McCoy will be Cousins’ backup and his contract reflects that. He got multiple years, a signing bonus, and a pretty good salary for a guy the team hopes never has to take a snap.

Fan questions—When will Redskins TE Jordan Reed get a new contract?—Reed led the Redskins in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, a pretty good feat for a tight end. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and he’s slated to make $1.6 million. Reed has not indicated any unhappiness with his deal, even though the Eagles’ Zach Ertz, drafted the same year that Reed was and who is a notch below Reed in terms of production, has already been extended to the tune of $42 million over five years with $13.2 million fully guaranteed at signing. It’s doubtful that Reed will get disgruntled, whether a deal gets hammered out before the start of the season or not. His payday will come.

Do the Redskins have any players they could trade?—After the Eagles traded away three players and got more favorable draft position in return I thought I’d look at players the Redskins might be able to deal away. The answer was that it’s pretty slim pickings.

‘A more lively destination:’ Next rendering of Skins’ stadium is pretty wild—Yes, we’ve spent all week making fun of the Redskins’ futuristic stadium design with the jokes centered on the moat that surrounds the building. I’ve gotten a kick out of people seriously analyzing the utility of the water around the stadium and pointing out how the bridges would serve as choke points for the exiting crowd. Lighten up, folks. It’s a concept design, not a blueprint. Whatever the new place ends up looking like, the concept design generated buzz, which was one of the purposes of putting out the drawings some 10 years before the place will open. The world now knows the Redskins are planning a new stadium and it’s going to be something out of the ordinary. Mission accomplished.

—The Redskins last played a game 69 days ago. It will be about 176 days until they play another one.

Days until: Redskins offseason workouts start 30; 2016 NFL draft 40; Redskins training camp starts 131

In case you missed it

They wouldn’t need to choke the crowds, they could put sharks with lasers on their heads in the moat.

Why the need to kill fans at all, apparently they’re already dying to tailgate in contrived areas without any actual tailgates?

Very telling. No deals for Golston, RGIII, or Morris yet. At least it sounds like Morris has a serious visit with the Cowboys. But our RGIII lovers should clearly see now what our issue was. No value, and other teams see it as well. For the life of me I still don’t understand the $16 M extension last year in him months prior to benching. That had to be a Snyder final stand. Whoever is responsible for that deal ruined RGIIIs player value. It forced him to ride pine for a full year unsuited. We might have been able to trade him last year for some value had they not chose the extension.

Glad to see DCs QB drama and situation fixed finally. For the first time in 2 decades I feel like this team has stability at that position.

My guess is Rg3 hinges on what evolves with Kap and Fitz He will get on somewhere.
Goldson could be back here but I hope not.
Alf could be back as well but I don’t see him getting out of Dallas. They are so used to bringing in low life’s and “rehabilitating” them that a stand up guy like Alf may be a bit of a culture change for them. Maybe Alf will be back. I hate to to think they are right about him, that hes on the downside of his career already. Its just not it? Yea I am denial about this one. I saw him come out of the gate last year with the line he had in front of him and look really good. As soon as the line got shuffled due to injury different story. He runs behind that Dallas line McFadden will not be the starter for long is what I think. Anyhow if Alf signs and is gone, I guess what makes it so hard to accept is that there is only hope at our RB position, no stability, just a bunch of B’s who get injured and cannot give you a seasons worth of reliability. I hope this plan for RB by committee doesnt blow up in their face.

Mr. colorofmyskinz…… It is a little premature to say as a fact, your QB situation is fixed. only time will tell that my friend. If 8-8 is your goal then you could be right.

As far as RG3 and Morris is concerned. They are more talented NFL skilled players than your current QB and if Matt Jones is smart he will try to exit this one dimensional offensive scheme headed by a fools gold of a HC who makes risky low upside coaching and player decisions.

This is nothing new in the NFL. Bad coaching lowers the stock of premier talented players. Yes, Jay Gruden brought down the stock value of RG3 and Morris because he was a coach who had NO IDEA what to do with those players skill sets and style. We have all heard people say this over and over and it is true.

I once could have bought Starbuck stock for $7 a share when the market corrected and devalued it. It is now $59.70 a share!! It is NOT the stock price that determines value, it is the returns that the company actually earns, their realized potential based on a sound business strategy. Stock price CHANGES ALL THE TIME and only suckers buy HIGH!!!!

You just go on and enjoy your greedy over $2million dollar a game QB ( AND BELIEVE ME KIRK COUSINS WANTS EVEN MORE!!!!) who has NEVER beaten a single winning team to this day in his entire NFL career. Do you also think this is very telling? When Kirk Cousins gets under big pressure he has turned into the “Wicked Witch of the West” , “I’m melting, I’m melting”. And to think you are confident in building your house on that!!!

Over 2M per game? You must be using that fuzzy math.

    • bangkokben - Mar 19, 2016 at 5:47 PM

“For the first time in 2 decades I feel like this team has stability at that position.”

I felt that way on Thanksgiving Day, 2012. Just sayin’.

      • sidepull - Mar 20, 2016 at 8:06 AM

Bang so true. That would really be hard to take. Two different Qb’s for the Redskins, win the NFCE in their first starts, are on the same team, and the disintegrate and the Redskins have zero. Could it happen, I guess. Will it happen? Better not. If it does, this franchise surely is snake bit.

They should put a see thru retractable top but looks good

Rich is the best Skins’ beat reporter in the market.

  5. Thetruthis - Mar 19, 2016 at 12:25 PM

Rich does somethings well, but Rich is sometimes a lazy, careless reporter who knows it is not sound reporting to write rumors as if they are facts.

Rich, saying the Jets visit with RG3 was more for show than anything else is just not substantiated. It is nothing more than lazy careless reporters once again putting their thoughts and spin on a situation and then another lazy careless reporter reporting it as fact and then a lazy, careless poster repeating it as fact.

How does Rich know that what he stated regarding the RG3 visit is a fact? Did Tom Boyles make such a statement. Of course they are going to wait for Fitz. Fitz is their first choice. But that does not mean they do not have to move on to a plan B should Fitz not compromise. Rich this is just an attack on RG3 by people like you and I find it disgusting. If you are any kind of professionally trained reporter you have got to have been trained how to carefully and accurately use your words. The better reporters would have said, “some have reported that the visit was more for show……. that would have been accurate. But, Rich’s gives no source for his fact reporting.

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Mar 19, 2016 at 1:56 PM

Some people say RGIII hasn’t yet gotten a contract this year, even though the likes of Brock Osweiler have gotten huge ones.

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 19, 2016 at 3:16 PM

I am not a professional trained reporter and I have never represented myself as one. I’m a blogger and insider.

And you are banned. You can disagree with me, but you will not call me lazy.

      • rtcwon - Mar 19, 2016 at 5:15 PM

Haha, he should have chose his words better!

Sad his bias prevents him from even understanding value (RG3 or Starbucks) is determined by what someone else is willing to pay, not performance.
