CSN: It’s official, Redskins have released Robert Griffin III

Mar 7, 2016, 11:20 AM EDT

The day many thought would never come is here. The Redskins have released Robert Griffin III. Here’s the story on

  1. mauriceatwood - Mar 7, 2016 at 11:32 AM

Hope he finds a new team and tears the league up.

    • goback2rfk - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:04 PM

He will tear it up for sure. Rob has the potential to carry a team and Win a SuperBowL.
Cousins has the potential to win a first round wild card game at best. Cousins is not winning a SB lets get real fellas.

      • bullets2586 - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Only thing he’ll be tearing up is his knee or the bench. Most likely the bench.

  2. Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 11:38 AM

If redskins get Chris long it will clearly be a upgrade from Jason hatcher…scot m. Looking to build a monster with that front seven unit…they should still release Andre Roberts but they might give him a chance to compete and release him in the summer if somebody else good get cut from another team

    • Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 1:56 PM

If redskins sign Chris Long it will be to battle with Ziggy hood for a roster spot

      • bullets2586 - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:05 PM

No way they sign Long. His age and declining production would be us going back to the old way of doing things. You know. Overpaying for older players that used to be real good.

  3. bangkokben - Mar 7, 2016 at 12:10 PM

    Sad day.

    • bangkokben - Mar 7, 2016 at 12:19 PM

Griffin, DY, Hatcher, and Knighton and likely Morris too.

  4. ET - Mar 7, 2016 at 12:19 PM

Best of luck to Robert with his future team.

Let’s hope he doesn’t ever light it up against the Skins.

    • goback2rfk - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:03 PM

Rg3 will dominate Kirk Cousins in the years to come. New reports are coming out that Rob fixed a lot of his mechanically issues while he was inactive last season. Rob is gunna tear it up.

      • gasngo14 - Mar 7, 2016 at 8:57 PM

  5. John - Mar 7, 2016 at 12:47 PM

Long overdue! Read the article on regarding him and Kapernick and no, he won’t be lighting it up anytime soon.

Read the article, then listen to the interview in ESPNs audio vault from The Drive last Friday in the 4 o’clock hour.

  6. metalman5150 - Mar 7, 2016 at 12:58 PM

I think I am most anger with the decision to release DY.
That dude has been nothing but spectacular for us. Team player. Core special teamer. No no-sense, blue collar type of person.

  7. kenlinkins - Mar 7, 2016 at 1:26 PM

I am not sure if today is a sad day or the start of getting right. We all had big hopes when RG3 was drafted, the day Young turned into a good find at FB / Special Teams players, the day Hatcher was signed to be the pass rusher needed, and Pot Roast was to be the missing piece on the front seven. IMO the new GM will continue the roster cutting of anyone who does fit his mold of not keeping over priced players when there are Cap saving to be had. While none of the above were shocks the new GM has a good case to let all four go. Who else is on the list? All we can do is guess, but IMO the number will be higher than most Redskins fans counted on just a few days ago.

  8. Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 1:50 PM

They just release dash on goldson and her on johnson

    • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 4:24 PM

      Who’s released on johnson, now??

      • lezziemcdykerson - Mar 7, 2016 at 6:57 PM

*crying laughing in my office right now* I do wanna know who released on Johnson tho.

  9. Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 1:52 PM

Been told redskins have been working hard to resign mason foster

  10. Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 1:54 PM

The pressure is on jay gruden and kirk cousins now…redskins either gonna target a couple WRs or a NT

  11. Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 2:03 PM

Was told Andre Roberts will eventually get cut…by NFL rules you can’t cut a injured player so his release will have to wait…Andre Roberts expected to be healthy around OTAs so I expect them to cut him around that time

  12. Mr.moneylover - Mar 7, 2016 at 2:06 PM

Redskins have created 29.5 mill in cap space today with all the guys they cut today

  13. cmehustle - Mar 7, 2016 at 3:26 PM

I will always look fondly on 2012. That guy gave me hope, when I thought that us fans werent allowed to have hope. It had just been so long. Gosh dammit I needed something, I mean Haynesworthless, to Sean Taylor, through Gibbs coming back and giving us somewhat of hope after the Spurrier debacle, all the way from Rypien and the 91 squad. RG3 really brought back the feeling for me as a fan, and I will never forget him for it. His career may never ever be the same, but he always has a fan right here. RG3! RG3! RG3! RG3!

    • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Yeah, sorry to see it end this way ….but it’s all for the best.

Things went sideways fast didn’t they?

I remember the comments at the time that that horrific playoff game injury was gonna have long term repercussions on the team. Didn’t believe it at that time, but everything went downhill from that point on. Sure, a lot of things went wrong — for a lot of reasons — and no one can deny that Robert’s play was a big part of they equation. Why did it diminish? Well, we’ve argued every side of that topic here and elsewhere for the past few years with no definitive conclusion. Fact is though, he’s gonna have to show a lot of skeptics that at 26 he still can improve and develop as a NFL QB.

But the thing I could never continence in this whole controversy were the repeated personal attacks on Robert’s character, his work ethic, his devotion to team, his sportsmanship, even his family — that whole big ugly smear campaign that was based strictly on hatred, rumor & innuendo. No one EVER attached any names (or even ONE name!) to those rumors that would have given them a shred of actual credibility.

Never have I seen a kid who appeared to me to be so friendly, so open, so enthusiastic, so hard working, so God-loving, and who put his blood, sweat and tears into every play get SO demonized the way he was by some of the Redskin fanbase. Pathetic.

May the fans of his new team have more open minds and hearts.

      • warpath1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:23 PM

the controversy that you are speaking of, I believe, is a product of the media and the trolling posters, nothing more. The team did what they could and when It became apparent that he was not our best option at qb the bitter folks blamed and pointed fingers. Robert owns his responsibilities for lack of success. I hope he learns from it.

        • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 6:16 PM

“Robert owns his responsibilities for lack of success. I hope he learns from it”

So true warpath! Personally I have little doubt that Roberts knows full well what his responsibilities were in his lack of success, as well as which circumstances were out of his control, and that he will do everything in his power to improve.

As in most failures, I think there were many reasons why the Griffin Era ended badly for the Skins, with a lot of gray areas. (Although “gray areas” do seem to be rather out of style these days, no? Many seem to prefer their answers to be in simplistic “black & white”, no matter how unrealistic they may be.)

But there is no doubt that the personal attacks on Griffin just amped a huge amount of negativity. And while I can see disgruntled fans (short for “fanatics”) letting that situation get ugly, imho there was no excuse for a responsible, professional media to inflame that rumor-fueled situation — if that WAS the case. (But then, there are some who wouldn’t put any thing past the media, aren’t there?)

      • John - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:02 PM

Listen to Sports Talk 980 from The Drive during the 5 & 6 o’clock hours. Cooley broke down the RG3/Cousins relationship as well as where he’ll land and under what circumstances. Not going to be a starter as to fragile and won’t last a full season. Best to go somewhere where he can be a #2

        Places he won’t go:

        Possible Landing:

      • lezziemcdykerson - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:15 PM

Can’t have Daddy in the locker room egging you to go speak your mind to the press. Man. He had to learn the hard way that Shanny1&2 were the only ones that were going to help him succeed in DC. Granted it’s been reported that Mike was force fed RGIII he did what professionals do, swallowed his pride, and tried to make it work. Everyone kept saying “Oh it’s the offense that’s going to get him killed” NO. Russell Wilson is half the size of RGIII and he hasn’t missed any games in his career.Play smart. RGIII was concussed in his 4th official game. Mike and Kyle tailored that offense around his skill set and he flourished as long as he could get back up after the play was over. He got hurt, repeatedly becoming more hesitant and less effective. A lot of people comment on RGIII as if he’s the same guy from 2012, he’s not. Maybe with a lot of hard work and some amnesia from opposing defenses (don’t forget that defenses picked up on the option, Carolina maybe Seattle the only teams that run the option effectively now compared to 2012 when everyone was doing it) he could get close to being that guy. Until he learns how to step back read a defense, move around with out taking off, not stare down his receivers, better touch on the ball… I mean it’s going to be a lot of mechanics for a guy that, in a 5 year career, has missed an entire offseason to rehab, missed several games his sophomore year benched by shanny, missed several games his 3rd year benched by Gruden and missed his entire 2015 campaign. I really do wish him the best of luck but I also REALLY hope he’s grown up a lot. I got SO tired of always hearing from him. Apparently so did the guys in the locker room because NO ONE was shocked when he got benched. Not one player was like “Oh Wow really? I thought he looked good.”Everyone said “It’s Kirk’s team” I hope KC and RGIII both have stellar years, as long as we don’t have to play each other.

        • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:06 PM

Hey! It’s refreshing to have a distaff perspective in the comments section around here! Too few and far between.

        • lezziemcdykerson - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:17 PM

Yeah I’ve already been called a Gruden and RGIII-hater so we’ll see how long it lasts.

  14. goback2rfk - Mar 7, 2016 at 4:59 PM

Rg3 will dominate Kirk Cousins for years to come as the Redskins settle for the next Andy Dalton in Kirk Cousins.
Although I am glad to see Rob get out of the career killers known by the name of the Redskins.
Good luck to you Rg3!! Its been great!!! Thank a lot you son of a b|thch!

    • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:09 PM

“Good luck to you Rg3!! Its been great!!! Thank a lot you son of a b|thch!”

At least we know where YOU stand on this topic, goback.

      NOT! ;^}

(Ya GOTTA be a politician! LOL)

    • warpath1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:25 PM

I doubt everything you just said. follow your own team, the cowboys

    • gasngo14 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:03 PM

I remember you screaming day and night 24/7 for the skins to trade the house for Bob… did that work out for us? Did I not tell you what would happen? I was DEAD ON :))

      • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:09 PM

You think this whole question has been definitively answered? Not by a long shot.

Way too soon for that. Stay tuned.

        • gasngo14 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:17 PM

yes bucobruce it has IF you are a REDSKIN fan :)) we all know you are not a REDSKIN fan your^^^ statement above proves that!!

        • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 11:13 PM

Haha! You don’t know jack shpit, gassy — never have, never will!

Everybody knows yer just a gasbag full of a lotta hot air.

But ya get me LMAO! Yer good for THAT at least. Thanks!

    • John - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:33 PM

Never going to happen. He will be out of the league before he wins 10 more games as a starter. He has the arm but none of the know how or the body.

    • John - Mar 8, 2016 at 7:42 AM

Dalton was pretty good this past season and the Bengals were well on their way to something big until Dalton tried to tackle a D Lineman and broke his hand.

    • John - Mar 8, 2016 at 7:45 AM

From this point forward RG3 will collect splinters in a sideline bench or be out of football, unless he goes to Canada.

  15. warpath1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 5:33 PM

Good luck to Robert. I was possibly the most excited fan to see how the 2012 season went with him at qb. However, between injuries and what defenses were able to do to limit his abilities, I don’t think he will have success. I had high hopes as most of you did, but agree with the redskins decisions. Have no disrespect for the man and wish him well.

    • lezziemcdykerson - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:19 PM

Basically. Also hope he’s done a lot of growing up. The number 2 Qb’s don’t get press conferences though so maybe he’ll have no choice.

      • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:10 PM

She does have a point there!!

  16. kenlinkins - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:39 PM

I think today is a good day to just let it go, wish RG3 the best of luck and walk away happy the Redskins got one NFC East title from his efforts. As someone who hated the RG3 deal, loved 2012, and just could not figure out why all the drama never died down over the first 3 years, I want to be able to walk away from the deal but not the man. I will leave the debate for the true cost of the deal for another time, today I am just sad that for what ever reasons the biggest gamble taken by the Redskins in a long time didn’t work out. “Good Luck RG3, and I hope the rest of your time in the NFL works out better than the first 4 years”……..

    • warpath1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 7:53 PM

hear hear. good luck RG. HTTR

  17. gasngo14 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:06 PM

I saw this day coming as soon as we traded for him!

    • brucefan1 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:12 PM

      LOL! Yeah …. sure.

Now what’s that old saying about blind squirrels and nuts….

      • gasngo14 - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:22 PM

Sure bruce you can say what you want but the bottom line is I CALLED IT out of the gate and was pretty dam accurate all the way from daddy, player, coaches, and owner….I said it would be a great circus, and it SURE WAS :))

  18. John - Mar 7, 2016 at 9:22 PM

For those that say the line that blocked for Robert sucked, keep in mind that Chester started this year in Atlanta, Polumbus started for Denver and Montgomery started at center, for Denver, when the Broncos played the Seahawks in the super Bowl a few years ago. Lichtensteiger was moved to center and well, we all know how terrible Trent Williams is… LOL Archives
