Need to Know: The Redskins week that was—the draft, Aikman on RG3

Jan 30, 2016, 5:43 AM EDT

RG3 minicamp 06.16

Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, January 30, 25 days before the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

A look at the Redskins week that was

Looking back at some of our most popular Redskins posts of the week:

Troy Aikman could see RG3 in Cowboys uniform, with one caveatThis is one of those silly season stories, where the former Dallas quarterback says that he could envision either Robert Griffin III or Johnny Manziel in a Cowboys uniform in 2016. You can’t dismiss it out of hand because of the source. Aikman is wired in to the organization and it’s likely that he has heard of some interest in Griffin on the part of the Cowboys. But that is a long way from a contract offer and Griffin agreeing to go to a situation where he would have to go and wait for the starter to get injured before getting a chance to play. Tony Romo isn’t going to get benched.

Which Redskin might be a surprise cap casualty in 2016?—The Redskins will have some cap room to work with and they will have more when they release Griffin. But there are some high-priced vets who might need to be released to create some more room to be able to sign Kirk Cousins, perhaps extend Jordan Reed, and add some needed players in free agency. Check out the post to see who Tandler and Tarik think could go.

How many draft picks do the Redskins have?—We’re still about three months away from the draft but interest is high which is why this draft basics post got so many page views. There are probably two or three dozen players that Scot McCloughan could take with their first pick, which is No. 21 overall. It seems like every fan has his or her favorite. We’ll talk about the draft plenty in the months leading up to it and, of course, during and after.

Giving odds on the return or departure of every Skins’ free agent—Free agency comes well before the draft and the Redskins have 16 players with expiring contracts. Some will be back, many won’t. We looked at every Redskins pending free agent and the odds of him being back in burgundy and gold for the 2016 season.

Ertz contract gives Redskins guidance on new deal for Reed—Jordan Reed isn’t going to be a free agent this year but the Redskins may look to lock up their standout tight end before he is. They got some help in figuring out what a deal with Reed should look like when the Eagles locked up Zach Ertz, their top tight end, through 2021 a year before his rookie contract expired. They have comparable career numbers up to this point but Reed is considered to be more of an impact player and he likely will make more than Ertz, who got a five-year deal worth $42.5 million with $20 million guaranteed.

Timeline

—The Redskins last played a game 20 days ago. It will be about 225 days until they play another one.

RG3 is not going to Dallas that is just a fact….unless some serious change has come over Griffin’s brain. He feels he is the best quarterback in the league so he is not looking to be a backup for any team. That alone disqualifies him from going to Dallas, but an even stronger reason exists why Griffin will not be going to Dallas in the next couple of years……and that is the CAP.

Tony Romo’s Cap hit this year is about 21 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS and next year 24 Million. So unless Robert believes he is an apprentice, and is willing to work for minimum wage, the Cowboys simply cannot afford to bring in a 10 million dollar backup. Nope, no way, nada, not going to happen, and I am shocked that Troy Aikman was not aware of the Cowboys Cap problems or take it into consideration. In fact the Boyz have some major CAP problems anyway and won’t be able to bring everyone back on Defense. They have troubles…….

p.s. prediction: Robert will go to HOUSTON.

      • Mr.moneylover - Jan 30, 2016 at 1:14 PM

Rg3 is not the type of QB Bill O’Brian likes so that doesn’t seem like a great fit…that will bad fast…he likes the QB that plays like tom Brady them pocket passers

    • goback2rfk - Jan 30, 2016 at 3:49 PM

Rg3 is so going to Dallas. And he will dominate the NFC East in the years to come. Ron just needed time to hone his skill set. Insider reporters are saying he looks a step faster and his pocket presence has improved greatly. Romo will take one hit to that steel plate in his collar bone and that damaged bone will crumble.
Rg3 will be the starting QB very soon in Dallas. And I am almost expecting a direct Rg3 vs. Kirk Cousins show down as early as next season.
Rob will find Dez Bryant down the field pretty easy. Rob has never been around any top quality receivers like Dez Bryant or played with an offensive line as good as Dallas. Hell no one could survive behind the Skins offensive line in 2013 2014

      • troy - Jan 31, 2016 at 7:22 AM

Really then why would the skins new gm release griffen??? I think the gm knows more about football and a little more about the qb situation than you do. That being said the gm hasn’t released griffen yet so time will tell

      • Skulb - Jan 31, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Insider reports also claim that he has barely been coached in 2015 and that he was basically playing catch with equipment staff. There is nothing in Robert’s game at any point since 2012 that confirms your opinion. Not a single snap.

    • scott hunt - Jan 30, 2016 at 8:26 PM

He already said he wants to go to dallas, have u not been payn attention? And his chances of getting on the field is alot better n dallas than washington. Personally i feel like manzeil is a better fit for cowboys offense. And both are young enough to wait romo out. Maybe they can BOTH learn something…from romo. THEN THE BOYS DRAFT 12 GAUGE N THE 4TH round. Cowboys will b set at qb. Thanks washington. Hope you guys enjoyed that playoff game cause no more division titles for yall buddy. Cowboys got 16 & 17.

      • troy - Jan 31, 2016 at 7:24 AM

Once again some one who knows more about football and the qb situation than the skins new gm and whole organization

      • wncskinsfan - Feb 1, 2016 at 8:59 PM

Based on what we have seen from Griffin beyond his rookie year, which was left on the field when he left it with his knee blown out . . . I would LOVE to see him go to Dallas. I am sure that Iggles and Giants fans would love it, too. He can maybe revive the Subways commercials, dicker around with some motivational memes on FB. Alienate himself from that locker room, too. Maybe get a coach cor two canned. I really would love to see Dallas get a taste of that disappointment. Canada might be a good place for him. He might actually be “the best” up there, maybe.

My prediction is long term or nothing with kirk cousins…if kirk cousins and his agent make the redskins use the 16 mill franchise tag witch is over paying him and he don’t live up to that franchise tag kirk cousins will be just another player who got more money then he deserve from the redskins…is there any better backup QB out there on the market ??? That’s what scot m. Is gonna look at before they make a final decision and personally its not a better option out there on the market who can backup kirk cousins… Like I said if we have to franchise tag kirk cousins its very important to have a great backup plan because it can turn south really quick next season then the franchise will be taking a step back…its easy to say get rid of a person but who you gonna really replace that person with????

    • DD - Jan 30, 2016 at 1:24 PM

Franchising Kirk ($20mil) is a good idea because they need to see him do it right for more than 1/2 season before going all in. He won’t sign for less than 3 years $50 million anyway, so slightly overpay him this one year and then decide.

    • Skulb - Jan 31, 2016 at 11:33 AM

Look at the bright side: the Skins just got a probowl caliber season out of Cousins while paying him about 800K. That counts as a freebie, so even if he gets franchised next season it’ll average out to below average QB pay over two years.

      • Mr.moneylover - Jan 31, 2016 at 12:59 PM

That don’t make sense at all…lol if we franchise tag kirk cousins the wholes on this team will still be there…20 mill is a lot of money just for one season even Charlie casley said that’s to much money that’s why its very important to get a long term deal done..scot m. Said he rather get a long term deal done instead of using franchise tag

        • Skulb - Jan 31, 2016 at 5:21 PM

Obviously. I’m just saying that Cousins was basically an indentured servant in 2015, wage wise. The worst QB you can think of in the NFL made more money than Cousins. http://overthecap.com/position/quarterback/
The way I see it he will still have been relatively cheap after a year with the tag, if he is let go then.

  5. Mr.moneylover - Jan 30, 2016 at 1:18 PM

There’s not many options out there for rg3 to go be a starter

    • goback2rfk - Jan 30, 2016 at 3:51 PM

Rg3 will be a starter in Dallas. Romo will get hurt again. Tony Rhomo is getting old and non dependable. While illusive in the pocket, Rhomo continues to take hits as he holds the ball way to long trying to create a play. I have Rhomo injured by week 5 and Rg3 starting for Dallas against a Redskins game as early as next season.

      • troy - Jan 31, 2016 at 7:25 AM

Will be an easy win for Washington then

        • wncskinsfan - Feb 1, 2016 at 9:01 PM

No doubt, Junior Gallette will likely cause Dallas to have to reach for their third stringer.

    • timwillhide - Jan 30, 2016 at 10:25 PM

RG3 and Morris both will be playing in Denver.

  6. John - Jan 30, 2016 at 9:07 PM

Can’t see how RG3 is going to take the league by storm. He was a full time backup this year. As such he would have had limited if any snaps in practice during the season. McCoy was the next man up were anything to happen.

Regarding Romo and Dallas, he is the starter and they will draft a QB early in the 2nd round. Romo has broken the collarbone prior to this season but that’s several years ago. He should not have played those games against Miami and Carolina. That’s to soon for that injury, same with Dez’s foot. That’s Jerry’s fault. Garrett needs to do like the year before last and go back to pounding the ball for balance and minimize Romo’s chance of injury and mistakes/turnovers.

    Robert’s best shot is Cleveland.

  7. Dallas Fan - Jan 31, 2016 at 8:49 AM

RGIII won’t have to wait long, to be a starter…look at the last few seasons for Dallas with Achy breaky, Romo.. Same break, gets worst and takes longer to heal.

    • Rich Tandler - Jan 31, 2016 at 9:12 AM

Well, actually, it was one season, not a few. Romo missed two games total in the four seasons prior to this one.

And I’m seeing a some Cowboys fans on here hoping that their long time QB gets injured. Pretty low class, but I expect nothing else.
