Need to Know: Five final thoughts on Redskins vs. Giants

Nov 29, 2015, 5:56 AM EDT

Here is what you need to know on this Sunday, November 29, the day the Washington Redskins host the New York Giants.

Five final thoughts on Redskins vs. Giants

—Giants left guard Justin Pugh and center Weston Richburg have been ruled out of today’s game, meaning that both teams will be without the left guard and center they started the season with. The Giants will shuffle the interior of their line, flipping right guard Geoff Schwartz from right guard to left, putting John Jerry at right guard, and plugging Dallas Reynolds in a center. I’ve been asked if the Redskins will try to blitz Eli Manning up the middle to try to take advantage of Jerry and Reynolds. I think they will try but Manning gets rid of the ball so quickly that it may be a futile effort. It’s probably better to keep defenders back in coverage.

—The more defenders you have on Odell Beckham Jr. the better. Manning to Beckham is the big edge the visitors will have today. Eventually Scot McCloughan would like to get the types of big, physical cornerbacks who can handle a receiver like Beckham. But today they don’t have anyone. Bashaud Breeland will try to break a string of three straight 100-yard games for the second-year receiver.

—Then again, Kirk Cousins should be able to pick out a target and make some hay all day against a Giants pass defense that is the worst in the NFL in terms of yards allowed. Part of their problem is that they don’t get much of a pass rush; they are tied for last in the NFL with 12 sacks.

—A good possibility for the player to be Cousins’ favorite target today is tight end Jordan Reed. He’s usually the QB’s preferred target anyway but the Giants have seen allowed the second-most fantasy points in the league to tight ends this year. In Week 3 in the Meadowlands this year Reed had his best day of the season in terms of yards gained, with six catches for 96 yards. On a side note, to the surprise of many, Reed was not on the injury report this week after leaving the Panthers game for a while with a knee injury. Perhaps he is learning to take care of himself, a good sign for his longevity in the NFL.

—The Giants are favored by 2.5 points. There is a perception out there that they are really a much better team than their 5-5 record indicates because they led at the two-minute warning in four of their five losses. But in terms of points they have scored 273 and given up 253. When your point differential is roughly equal at this point in the season that means that you are about a .500 team. Their record is no fluke. Giving up late leads also means that their defense isn’t very good. Cousins, Reed, DeSean Jackson, Matt Jones, and the rest should be able to move the ball against them. I’ve been saying the Giants will win all week but the call this morning is to take the Redskins plus the 2.5 with the expectation that they get the outright win in a shootout.

Today’s schedule: Redskins vs. Giants, 1 p.m., FOX

“…..Manning gets rid of the ball so quickly that it may be a futile effort. It’s probably better to keep defenders back in coverage.” That is a very bad idea, we’ve seen it time and time again, we cannot cover for an extended period of time!! What your saying is essentially give Manning all the time in the world and hope the coverage is good enough for an extended period of time- if they do that – like they did in Carolina- it’ll be another blow out.

    • John - Nov 29, 2015 at 7:48 AM

Manning has picked us apart with the short quick passes the last couple of games. If our guys can get to him early, then maybe bad Eli will shows up. Otherwise, he’ll start to hitus with deep balls like last time…

      • hk2000 - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:25 AM

Well, Then we’re doomed either way- no way you can get to him rushing 3 or 4!!! Maybe we need a more creative DC?

      • voice4thefans - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:35 AM

Agree that is the key to the game , we need to blitz him and blitz him a lot

  2. JOHNNY B - Nov 29, 2015 at 8:01 AM

No question about it this game is the most important game so far this year. We are lucky to have it at home to give us the support of the fans. I think when Cousins hears the cheers from the stands his confidence grows. It will be a good game hope we win.HTTR

    • bangkokben - Nov 29, 2015 at 8:25 AM

Giant fans’ cheers? It seems whomever we host has 15% of the lower bowl. New Orleans and even Tampa.

  3. hail74 - Nov 29, 2015 at 8:25 AM

That giants D is getting healthy now tho. If they can pick off Brady and cause him to fumble 2x while getting 3 sacks, there’s no reason to think they can’t do it to cousins. They’re avg 3 TO/gm over last 5.

    • timwillhide - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:06 AM

Cousins has thrown at least 2 interceptions a game against the Giants. If he eliminates them we have a good chance of winning

  4. Hail man - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:14 AM

First time ever posting! We have a shot at winning this game with that fact that we are playing at FedEx Field today. Getting a turnover and getting to Eli manning will be critical. HAIL

  5. colmac69 - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:34 AM

Don’t know why but I got gd feeling for today….

Win today is essential…lose nxt wk we at worse one behind with four left (assuming Nyg bt nyj nxt wk)….today is must cause we would have great chance of being least 4-2 div cause ny would only get 3-3 div…

Avoid t/overs and hopefully get lead and see how Nyg

However if we get blown out I b on to admit I was wrong lol

    • skinsgame - Nov 29, 2015 at 10:56 AM

I had a good feeling last week.

      • colmac69 - Nov 29, 2015 at 11:31 AM

Hopefully result better the day than last wk lol

      • brucefan1 - Nov 29, 2015 at 12:46 PM

“I had a good feeling last week.”

So did I! But I realize know that was fool’s gold; a combination of basking in the afterglow of the New Orleans trouncing combined with totally underestimating Cam & the Panthers.

None of that this week. I am looking for the B&G to bounce back from their own debacle, against beatable (but not patsies … by a far piece!) longtime foe.

Gotta get the G-men’s recent domination outta there heads and play fired-up for :60, come up with a great game plan (cuz you know Tom & Co. will), and maybe flip the script on their turnover history with NYG.

C’mon guys … Give the home crowd something to cheer about, all us fans something to be proud of, and keep the Redskins RELEVANT (for at least another week!!).

        • skinsgame - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:40 PM

I believe the intangibles you cited earlier were a big part of what went down today. Motivated. Good win.

        • brucefan1 - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:56 PM

I was scared ta hell that the Giants belief that they could/would beat the Skins by any means necessary was gonna come true AGAIN (for a minute there, at least!)

Love the Skins having bragging rights over the local team! Can wear the B&G proudly when out n about!!

  6. voice4thefans - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:41 AM

Wet rainy day and we are playing the Giant’s I heard this song before and it do not sound to good, I really hope the tune change today

  7. ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:48 AM

    Six — HTTR!

  8. sidepull - Nov 29, 2015 at 11:47 AM

Wet cruddy day. Pound it Alf. Just pound that rock. All day.

  9. kenlinkins - Nov 29, 2015 at 12:44 PM

Us older guys remember something called “Redskins Weather” (i.e. anything that was wet) and looked forward to seeing teams hit DC with rain in the air. That is not the case any more but maybe the “New Look” Redskins will show up after getting their butts kicked last Sunday. My hope is that the new DC will break his patterns and put more heat on Eli and from places he has not shown yet. The two big keys will be 1. Do the Redskins show up mad and ready to play for a shot at the NFC East title and 2. Can they get any heat on the Giants QB and allow the make shift defensive backfield to make some plays. Either way I am betting the over (46) and putting my winnings at risk by taking the 2.5 points and the Redskins. Maybe Hall at safety can free lance and out guess Eli & and gain a pick or maybe the front seven can cause a turn over / fumble for a TD (God’s knows it is over turn after handing that out to other teams the pass few years). I understand this is begging the football Gods for things the Redskins talent level shouldn’t allow, but at this point maybe the Yo Yo is now it ways back up.

    • kenlinkins - Nov 29, 2015 at 3:32 PM

I needed 30 points in the 2nd half to cash in on the “sure” part of my combo bet and I get zero. Just go’s to show you how the Yo Yo can work.

  10. ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 1:29 PM

‘Two interceptions but zero points?’ he grumbled.

  11. JOHNNY B - Nov 29, 2015 at 1:55 PM

The game is looking very defensive, the Redskins defense is looking good so far.

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 2:13 PM

      Real good. Another stop!

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 2:15 PM

Looks like good Kirk suited up today, too.

      • hail74 - Nov 29, 2015 at 2:41 PM

Agreed. Two passes made me cringe tho, the dropped pick 6 by DRC and the deep pass to a double covered Roberts. He’s definitely taking more chances today. It would seem he keeps going for that next rung on the development ladder. First he has a rep as an int machine but cuts down on that. Next he is a game manager who will do what coaches want but needs to work on improvising broken plays. Now he’s taking chances deep with pretty decent pressure.

        • goback2rfk - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Two QB’s have 10+ TD’s and 2 or fewer INT’s at home this season. Those quarterbacks? Tom Brady and Kirk Cousins.

        • brucefan1 - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:57 PM

Now they gotta get Cuz to replicate that on the road!!

If they Skins take care of their own business, that should be in Dallas come next Monday nite vs. a demoralized Pokes team (they are demoralized, AREN’T they??!!)

Dagnabbit, I HATE a those night. Game “showcases”.

But it’s another chance for this Skins to show they can wear big boy pants. Another big step in the process.

  12. skinsgame - Nov 29, 2015 at 2:39 PM

Why is Compton out there? I thought maybe Moses was hurt but I saw him jog off at half so he’s not hurt. I don’t want to jinx him but, Breeland is owning OBJ to this point. As much as Manning has tried to go to that option, Breeland has done a helluva job. Surprised at how this game is going. HAPPILY! Keep it up!!!

    • hail74 - Nov 29, 2015 at 2:42 PM

Compton has been coming in as an extra blocker

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 2:57 PM

      I’m “watching” on the radio.

I believe I heard them say Moses had an ankle issue, but came back in.

In any case, both he and Compton blocked for Morris’s last run (8 yards and a 1st down).

  13. goback2rfk - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:14 PM

Who would of thought the Skins would keep the Giants Scoreless through 3 quarters. Great game, big win, wow!

    • hail74 - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:18 PM

      Love it!

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:18 PM

Funny thing…With about 11 minutes to go, the radio guys started talking about the last time the Skins D had a shutout.

A few minutes later, and we’re sweating this baby out. But here we go, first time we’ve beaten the Giants since 2012.

      ABOUT TIME, and HTTR!

  14. hail74 - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:19 PM

Doesn’t matter what side of the fence you sit on as far as this team is constructed, you have to love what just happened!

    • skinsgame - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:42 PM

Hail yeah! Gimme one more next week. For me, nothing could be better than beating the Ginas and following that with beating the Cowgals.

    • colmac69 - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:46 PM

Made hard work of that did we not but we will take it…..

Running game showed some life with morris making couple moves like ole days

Cousins gd again…one bad pass but overall spot on

Defense was strong until started to blow up in fourth…Kerrigan looked best I seen this yr….still missing dominant outside pass rusher with quickness tho

      Special teams coverage xcellent again

Didn’t like 4th dwn playcall…like going for it but hate those handoffs to fullbacks….

Overall deserved win as we were better team for 3 and half qtr

What catch from Beckham tho….incredible agility

      Bring on dallas

  15. skinsgame - Nov 29, 2015 at 4:44 PM

Props to the defense today. Breeland played great as did Blackmon the secondary. Pass rush showed up today and several players showed up. Penalties were nearly a killer early and then late but, they held together and executed. Just bitchin.

  16. goback2rfk - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:02 PM

Another solid performance from Captain Kirk ‘franchise’ Cousins. Definitely had a couple of throws that could have been bad, but overall he got it done against his arch nemesis the NY ‘football’ Giants.
Lets hope to grab another big Win next week and carry our assess back to .500 with a 6 and 6 record.
We seem to play well at home. Might get a 1st Round Playoff Win if we can Host a game at Fed-Ex.
Who knows, get hot at the right time and see where this thing ends up. Good to see the Redskins finally heading in the right direction. HTTR.

  17. squawonthewarpath - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:02 PM

WE WANT DALLAS!!!!! LOL..Bet alot of the old schoolers remember that one :)

  18. brucefan1 - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:07 PM

Totally off topic here … but what the hell are the Niners WEARING! Is that dark brown jerseys and pants, with red numbers & trim?!

I can not believe the unis these teams are coming up these days? Don’t know if I love or hate em, but you certainly can’t IGNORE them!

(What might the Skins come up with; gold on gold, with burgundy numbers?? Watch out on Monday night! LOL)

Now back to your regularly scheduled CELEBRATING!!

  19. kenlinkins - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:20 PM

Time to be Redskins fans, forget we are under 500%, that the running game still is not working, that with 3 INT’s we got no points, that a undrafted WR had to play CB and save the game and (list your own concerns here). We know deep down we feel like the poor kid at the rich kids school dance wearing the only rented monkey suit there, just grab the best looking girl there and dance like you just don’t care. Start yelling “We want DALLAS” and point to the NFC EAST standings. Until some kills the Redskins chances at making the play offs I am going to feel like dancing up a storm!

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:33 PM

Dallas at Washington on Monday night on Pearl Harbor Day – be there or be square!!!

      *makes Carlos Santana guitar face*

      • gasngo14 - Nov 29, 2015 at 9:02 PM

NO one BETTER on the strings… Carlos Santana is a beast on guitar!

    • brucefan1 - Nov 29, 2015 at 5:46 PM

They’re as shocked & disgusted in greater NYC as Skins’ fans are ecstatic on the Redskins’ reservation! (My apologies to anyone that designation offends … kinda…)

      • goback2rfk - Nov 29, 2015 at 11:07 PM

Those Giants fans that are whining and complaining that they lost to Cousins and the Redskins can kiss my a-s-s. Archives
