Redskins’ 53-man roster finalized–for now

Sep 5, 2015, 4:35 PM EDT

Running backs training camp

The Redskins have finalized their 53-man roster at least for today. There could be changes if they add players who were released by other teams so the bubble players can’t rest easy just yet.

Here is the roster as it stands tonight. The team can begin signing players to the 10-man practice squad after waivers are cleared at noon on Sunday.

Starters are in bold.

Quarterback (3): Kirk Cousins, Robert Griffin III, Colt McCoy

With this morning’s report that Griffin will stay, this was set.

Offensive line (10): Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Kory Lichtensteiger, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses, Tom Compton, Spencer Long, Arie Kouandjio, Josh LeRibeus, Ty Nsekhe

This is an overload; one could be released if the team picks up a third tight end

Wide receiver (6): Pierre Garçon, DeSean Jackson, Andre Roberts, Ryan Grant, Jamison Crowder, Rashad Ross

Ross wasn’t on many peoples’ radar before training camp started but he forced his way onto the roster with a strong preseason.

Tight end (3): Jordan Reed, Derek Carrier

Either Tom Compton is going to be the third tight end or they will find somebody on the waiver wire. Reed is injury prone and Carrier has only been here a few weeks.

Running back (4): Alfred Morris, Darrel Young, Matt Jones, Chris Thompson

This has been set in stone since the start of training camp. Undrafted rookie Trey Williams could be a practice squad candidate if he clears waivers.

Defensive line (7): Jason Hatcher, Terrance Knighton, Stephen Paea, Chris Baker, Ricky Jean Francois, Kedric Golston, Frank Kearse

They have gone with seven on the DL in most years but I think they need an extra linebacker to help on special teams.

Outside linebacker (4): Ryan Kerrigan, Trent Murphy, Preston Smith, Jackson Jeffcoat

Jeffcoat played pretty well when moved to the active roster late last year due to injuries. He got an opening to the roster when Junior Galette was injured and he took advantage of it.

Inside linebacker (4): Perry Riley, Keenan Robinson, Will Compton, Martrell Spaight

The Redskins could be looking for another linebacker on waivers.

Cornerback (5): Chris Culliver, DeAngelo Hall, David Amerson, Justin Rogers, Deshazor Everett

Bashaud Breeland will not be on Week 1 roster due to NFL suspension.

Safety (5): Dashon Goldson, Duke Ihenacho, Jeron Johnson, Kyshoen Jarrett, Trenton Robinson

A total of 10 defensive backs is a little heavy; they could release one to make room for another linebacker.

Specialists (3): LS Nick Sundberg, P Tress Way, PK Kai Forbath

Forbath brushed off a challenge in training camp and this was set.

The numbers: 25 offense, 25 defense, 3 specialists; 16 new to the Redskins organization in 2015 including seven draft picks

McCloughan’s first roster is vastly improved from last year. It bodes well for the future. I am sure he will make a couple moves before Miami and continue to shuffle in season. But, step one of the plan is a success.

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:41 PM

How can anyone know that until the season even starts. subjective reasoning???

  2. smotion55 - Sep 5, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Looks like a lot of changes, and Docter resigns over rg3 concussion-what the hell is going on. Rich get Honest are you tired of all this non football stuff or what

    • wncskinsfan - Sep 5, 2015 at 5:12 PM

I am amazed that the NFL would even use that Doc after apparently botching things pretty bad in the past. Just another bad NFL decision. too many of those going on these days.

      • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:27 PM

When it comes to the NFL, we would be wise not to rush to judging the doctor. The NFL is like a blind man with no sense of touch.

  3. goback2rfk - Sep 5, 2015 at 5:11 PM

Get Colt McCoy out and sign TE Fred Davis or Chris Cooley. With RG3 solidified as the number or 2 or possible the future number 1 there is no reason to hamper Colt McCoys career anymore.

    • Alex - Sep 5, 2015 at 5:25 PM

I totally agree. Colt McCoy’s roster inclusion is taking away from someone who can be more valuable & who can contribute to the team weekly. At least 16 NFL teams will start the season with only 2 QB’S on their roster. Why can’t the Redskins be the 17th team?

      • redskinsnameisheretostay - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:44 PM

Not for two TEs that would be useless to this team.

      • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:29 PM

The Redskins will have ONLY 2 QBs healthy for week 1.

        • shermanp79 - Sep 6, 2015 at 9:42 AM

u know rg3 health thing could easily disappear if wanted

        • bangkokben - Sep 6, 2015 at 10:08 AM

Of course, the Redskins are manipulating the concussion protocol and the results by multiple doctors. We all know that ANYTHING is possible in the NFL but that real chances of that being the case is less than 10%. There is too much to lose for the Redskins if found out to be the case.

      • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 6:02 AM

Colt McCoy is a good qb. No way he should be cut. He threw for about 300 yards or better in both of his starts last year. The team respects him and he’s actually the best leader at Qb we have, that’s why Jay loves him.

Colt McCoy is a Rich Gannon type qb, extremely accurate in the short and intermediate passing game. I think there’s a chance someday if Colt gets on a team that has a good defense that he could take that team to the playoffs.

    • anthony - Sep 5, 2015 at 5:30 PM

      RG3 can’t play

    • wncskinsfan - Sep 5, 2015 at 5:55 PM

I wonder if Davis is even in the conversation at Redskins park. I guess if he was, they would have put a move on him by now. I am curious where it is being reported that he is the number 2, not having cleared concussion protocol (as far as we know) and such. seems Colt would be #2 by default if nothing else. I think they are sitting on Robert for a minute to keep the trade thing going. It would not make sense to keep him around, but then again, there is a lot of nonsensical stuff happening with the Skins these days. who knows. I know I am ready to watch some football.

      • goback2rfk - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:01 PM

Davis should be in the conversation at Redskins park. He has had some slip ups with the law, however, he is ready to come in and make on the field contributions immediately. When and if Jordan Reed gets hurt again we will need someone like Davis to come in that can play half way decent. I liked Davis when he played for the skins he was pretty damn good.

        • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:31 PM

Davis was never a good blocker.

    • dcfaninecuador - Sep 5, 2015 at 6:10 PM

Go back… I hope your tongue Is firmly planted in your cheek.

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:43 PM

    • skinsfan2 - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:51 PM

It’s actually RG3 who is taking a roster spot from someone more worthy. The fact that it appears he will be on the team this season is a joke and wreaks of Dan Snyder once again injecting himself into football decisions instead of letting football people make football decisions. As soon as we think maybe, just maybe this organization has finally learned they prove that no, they’ve (Snyder) have learned nothing.

4 or 5 wins tops. What a joke this organization is.

      • redskinsnameisheretostay - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:01 PM

More speculation with no facts from the hopelessly nonsensical. Did you see Scot’s report on RG3 and how he’d not give up on him. This was back in May. Maybe …just maybe he is sticking to his guns instead of the crap you try to sell with Snyder getting involved.

      • redskinsnameisheretostay - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:08 PM

Also the fact that RG3 hasn’t been cleared from his concussion is a huge reason why the team couldn’t cut him now. Whether they do is not relevant to the point. What is clear there is so much going on about RG3’s status that has nothing to do with the owner that you drama queens keep conjuring out of thin air.

      • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:27 PM

Why? Because we can’t play with 45 active players?

      • Johnny B. - Sep 6, 2015 at 9:46 AM

Stop you have no clue want you are talking about. They are not giving up on Rg3. They will keep him the # 2 qb to get reps. If he shows Improved play they will keep him. Even in high school and college if a player is having problems learning the plays they move him to the 2nd or 3rd team until he is ready. Less pressure easier to learn.

      • HatersStink - Sep 6, 2015 at 4:20 PM

Are you really a fan? All I see is you repeating what ignorant talking heads say. Every decision you/they don’t agree with was not necessarily a Snyder decision. I’m not a Snyder apologist but please stop stating your thoughts as if they are facts.

    • jimscranton - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:15 PM

I would consider Ben Koyack. I wanted Wash to draft him & Im not a ND fan. Think he could be excellent TE in league for many years. Now get chabce to pick him up & drop a DB since Breeland will return week 2.

      • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 6:04 AM

Yeah, Koyack would be a good signing as a 3rd te.

    • redskingoon - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:27 PM

Yeah but if Colt’s career isn’t hampered here, it will be hampered somewhere else. I love Colt but it’s not like if we cut him tomorrow then he’ll have a starting job elsewhere Monday morning. We kinda need the insurance he offers.

  5. mr.moneylover - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:14 PM

They still got dead weight on the roster…the players who didnt show much in the preseason are jason hatcher, trent Murphy,Kendrick golston,David amerson, and stephen paea….now idk if they was playing it cool cause it was the preseason but to see all those guys that aint even get close to the QB at all its a trouble sign I did see pot roast get in the back field multiple times but he aint have no help from neither side

    • mr.moneylover - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:19 PM

I predict the players I name will be gone next year…and if andre roberts dont step up his game in the regular season he will be gone too….scot m. Gonna make his team stronger and stronger year by year….I think next season will be a more exciting season for the redskins because its year 2 under scot m.

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Sep 5, 2015 at 7:48 PM

Hater did fine and got his share of pressures. Murphy is a run stuffer. I agree Paea hasn’t shown much but that’s preseason. Let’s move on and see what they can do in the regular.season.

      • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:42 PM

This is the first time Paea or Knighton has ever played in a 3-4 defense, it’s going to take them a few games to adjust to the defense IMO.

        • obxskins - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:10 PM

Paea came from Bears..Bears run 3-4??

        • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:21 PM

The Bears ran a 4-3 defense for 80 years and only switched to the 3-4 D when they hired Vic Fangio his offseason.

Paea never played under Fangio as we signed Paea in March and Fangio was hired his offseason.

    • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:52 PM

Hatcher may retire after this season, but he’s the team’s best DL, you are the only person I’ve ever seen write that he did nothing. He led the DL with 5 sacks last year and is good against the run despite missing the final 3 games and missed time in other games. I think Hatcher is going to be better this year than he was last year.

I think you Could be right about Amerson, if he doesn’t improve he won’t be back after this season.

Stephen Paea is new to the 3-4 defense. It will take him a few games to adjust, but I do expect him to be an upgrade over the DEs that started from 2012-14 despite Hatcher.

Trent Murphy is not star, but he’s a lunch pale guy. He’s the type of guy every team needs, a great run defender and has extreme motor that’s non stop. I expect Murphy to have about 5 sacks this year and be the team’s best fun stuffing OLB.

As for Golston, he does everything. He plays all the DL positions and special teams. It’s hard to replace guys like him and he’s a great leader and mentor.

      • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:33 PM

        Agreed on all points.

    • pookiebear - Sep 6, 2015 at 10:10 AM

      Good sentence structure.

  6. abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:40 PM

I think the skins should keep the roster as unless they can trade Griffin.

I’m stoked they kept Rashad Ross. He really has played well when he’s gotten a chance the plast two seasons, I’m hopeful he can be the team’s kick returner should Roberts not improve or Crowder not seize the job.

I like that they have 10 OL, I love that they’ll use Tom Compton as a blocking TE, that will make the running game better.

I also like they they’re keeping 5 safeties over keeping 9 linebackers. The skins will need those 3 reserve safeties – Johnson, Robinson & Jarrett – for special teams. All 3 a great special teams, there’s no way they should cut any of them.

    • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:40 PM

If they pick up a blocking tight end, do the get rid of Nsekhe? I’m beginning to think that Griffin is untouchable. I had thought that they would try to trade him and still might but the GM’s wife ‘s comments (I know how stupid this sounds) may have convinced Snyder to keep Griffin until the end of the year. Snyder may be holding onto Robert as a contingency in case the season implodes and the GM’s person life implodes. Then he may start over with just Griffin.

      • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:50 PM

Yeah, I think Nskehe was literally the last guy to make the roster.

      • timwillhidetimwillhide - Sep 5, 2015 at 11:41 PM

I think the reason they still have RG3 is like the GM when he was hired “you don’t give up on a player with that much talent this early”. I think starting Cousins is solely Grudens idea and when it fails he will be gone.

        • cal - Sep 6, 2015 at 12:50 AM

        • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 6:21 AM

I think they benched Griffin too early. They should have at least given him the first month of the season tom prove himself.

As for Cousins I think he’ll keep the job the whole way through this year. Last year cousins really only had two bad halves – Giants & Cardinals – in 6 starts. You take out the 7 ints he threw in those two games and Cousins only threw 2 ints in 4 games. (Jax 0, Phila 1, Seatle 0, Tenn 1)

You could make the argument that Cousins shouldn’t have been benched in the Tenn game last year. It was too quick a trigger IMO.

If Cousins doesn’t get benched at half time of that game and he ends up starting the rest of the season in his 15 starts, Cousins would have thrown for around 4,275 yards and 25 TDs in those games with 15 to 20 ints on the year. That means if Cousins had finished the season last year he would have been top 10 in passing yards and top 15 in passing touchdowns and that’s in 15 games!! Cousins ranked 32nd in passing yards last year and he only started 6 games!!

The Giants & Cards games for Cousins last year were the true outliers of all his starts.

I know you’re a Griffin supporter, as am I but let’s face the facts here in his first year as the true starter, Cousins has a strong, STRONG!, chance to be a top 15 qb in the nfl and throw for around 4,500 yards and 30 touchdowns.

I wanted Griffin to work out but Couins is a better pure pocket passer and better for Jay’s offense. The Redskins can win with Kirk as their qb and I think Kirk can be a better qb than Andy Dalton was for Gruden in Cincy.

        • bangkokben - Sep 6, 2015 at 9:29 AM

          It’s not going to fail.

  7. hrrcyberdemon - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:44 PM

Rich, you were close, in case anyone is keeping score on you. Closer than me or anyone could predict i’m sure.
Your “bubble watch final version” vs the actual 53-man list wasn’t too far off. Here’s how it graded. 7 wrong.

+1 extra lineman you missed Nsekhe

-1 +1 Spencer gone, insert Ross

    -1 Hamm gone

+1 extra D lineman you missed, Kearse

-1 less Outside linebacker you missed, Bates

-1 less inside linebacker you missed, Spaight

    – less cornerback you missed, Everett

    • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:58 PM

I predicted the entire roster correct except for Jerron Johnson making it over Akeem Davis. I really love Davis as a special teams guy and I think we’ll regret cutting him. Jeron Johnson played poorly this preseason from everything I saw. Both Jarrett & Robinson played better than Johnson did.

        • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:50 PM

41 offensive touchdowns? Isn’t that like a dozen more than the last two years? No 4-12 prediction?

        • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:14 PM

Yeah, they probably won’t have as many rushing TDs as I predicted but I hated taking TDs away from Morris eventhough it will almost surely happen.

        • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:29 PM

I prefer the sunny prediction of 40+ TDs. Double checked, just nine more than last year and eight more than the year before. Puts them just north of the middle offensively.

        • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 10:37 AM

I looked it up and last year the redskins had 15 rushing TDs, so that is definitely something that can be replicated, maybe even surpassed with Matt Jones added as a goal line type back.

The added TDs comes from Kirk Cousins starting at qb. If Kirk had started all 16 games last year he would have thrown somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 passes.

So, it’s because of Kirk that the Skins will score around 40 TDs.

      • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:42 PM

Davis has an injury so they may bring him back later if circumstances align.

        • abanig - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:56 PM

I hope so, I forgot about his injury. Makes my prediction for him to make the roster over Jeron Johnson look even more foolish! Lol

        • bangkokben - Sep 5, 2015 at 10:00 PM

Who knows when it happened? With all the other team “news” going on, his injury was definitely back page stuff. I don’t recall seeing him in the last game but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing.

        • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 5:52 AM

The 9 more TDs I predicted were passing TDs also. We rushed for 15 TDs last year.

If cousins had started all 16 games last year he would have thrown for 27 TDs, so that’s achievable and so is 42 TDs for our offense.

  8. Darren - Sep 5, 2015 at 8:49 PM

I’m disappointed in some of u fans. Must be young. Why wouldn’t any of you instead of saying somebody is just gonna get hurt, he sucks, blah blah. Jorden reed stays healthy he’s gonna be top right end. This offense last year with all quarterback changes was ranked 13th. Better than half. Our defense is gonna be much improved much. With the changes to training staff and coaches, we are gonna compete man. Been a fan for 33 years. Some of you need to watch the game, the players actually play. Not the media!!’ HTTR

  9. hummel26 - Sep 5, 2015 at 9:27 PM

If Griffin winds up playing, and he very may well, because of injuries or even poor performance, and he goes in, and GETS HURT, what a mess that would be. If they are keeping RG3 around because of the owner’s feelings and fantasies about him (that he could somehow regain that amazing form he had in year one, when the Shanahans found so many ways to hide his weaknesses and before he lost a step and became a player of regular speed), and Griffin gets back in there and gets hurt and they are forced to pick up his option because you can’t release an injured player, the coach is done, and the controversy over RG3 will continue to distract the team.

I hope they figure this out and let him go, but Snyder still is GM, at least when it comes to RG3.

    • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 5:13 AM

If Cousins and Mccoy play poorly and Griffin gets another shot then it’s nit an issue because Griffin is playing well. BTW I still think it’s wrong that Griffin won’t get to start the season as the starter before they may bench him because of performance.

I’d rather have Bear Pascoe, he’s arguably the best run blocking TE in the nfl.

    • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 8:38 AM

It’s worth working out guys like Phillips, Pascoe, Rosario & Stobeburnner but let’s remember that these guys weren’t kept by their old teams like Dallas, Carolina and the NYG and were cut by the teams they signed with this offseason – Chicago, Atl & San Diego also. Obviously they weren’t anything special this offseason.

  11. cal - Sep 6, 2015 at 12:45 AM

How about that the doctor resigned a week later… Guess he’s not fielding any questions either.. Looks like someone put the bullshit in the game concerning the decision to keep RG3 out of the Baltimore game & Doc doesn’t want to explain… Anyway I was never pulling for Jay Gurden for HC position… I thought Darrell Bevel, Art Briles, Or even Kyle Shanahan would’ve been a better hire… Bevels’ success with Russell Wilson speaks for it’s self… Art Briles knows RG3 & his strengths… Kyle Shanahan was responsible for RG3’s 2012 rookie of the year campaign… Need I say more… Gruden doesn’t have experience with a QB with RG3’s skill set & his unwillingness to put together a playbook that works to RG3’s strengths instead of his weaknesses only proves that he doesn’t care to work with RG3…. RG3 is not a bust… He’s just not a drop back passer although he does have the arm strength to launch the ball down field… He’s a spread/option QB… So he excell’s in those types of concepts spread formation, zone read, play action, pistol, bootlegs, rollout’s, wildcat etc… Then as u move forward u teach him how to drop back but first u gotta do what’s necessary to win games & Gruden never did that… In fact I don’t recall RG3 doing anything other than drop back but Kirk & Colt did some rollout’s, zone read, shotgun & everything else… But after this season Jay Gruden will be looking for work & RG3 will still b a Redskin…. However RG3 & his meddling father are responsible for all his hardships… It was them to say that they wanted RG3 to drop back more & not run so much… Now that he knows that’s not his thing I hope he gets back to the basics & learn to slide/ get out of bounds/ get rid of the ball

    • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 5:59 AM

I agree with everything you said but I don’t think Robert will be back after this season. They’re not going to pay Robert $16 million next year.

Also, Gruden won’t be fired if Kirk or Colt start every game because I believe the team will win more games with one of those two at qb than they won last year.

With Kirk/Colt starting, the team wins 6-8 games imho and Gruden will be back.

I don’t think Snyder agree a to fire Jay over a 10/11 lost season because he’d still owe jay $15 million or 3 more years of salary.

      • cal - Sep 6, 2015 at 8:28 AM

U know I like Cousins & I think he’s got talent… Not sold on McCoy at all… Mcoy is a game manager as Cousins is also… U know what I mean they need a lights out running game, a sound defense & an above average special teams… Meaning there has to be a score from the running game every game & a score from either special teams/the defense every game.. And the kicker has to make the most out of every field goal/extra point attempt… Yes Cousins will get us down field & he will even find the end zone but he’s
good for throwing interceptions at crucial points of the game & McCoy he couldn’t even beat the backups of the Jaguars… My fault the players fighting for the final roster spots

        • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 8:40 AM

I’ll agree Mccoy is “more of a game manager” but let’s not forget that in the two games he started and finished last year he threw for 299 yards and over 300 yards against Dallas & Minn. I think he can be like Rich Gannon.

  12. cal - Sep 6, 2015 at 2:20 AM

Waiver wire pick ups: Logan Thomas, Phil Taylor, Derek Sherrod, Joseph Fauria/Jake Stoneburner/Wes Saxton

Cuts: Kedric Golston, Ty Nsekhe, Colt McCoy

The DL looks suspect at the NT position behind Terrance Khighton… Phil Taylor would be great for a back up here… In a 3-4 defensive scheme the DL is where the pass rush begins this is how the LB’s get free to create pressure… Golston has not done this in
Years & everybody keeps talking his special teams play he hasn’t looked particularly good there either… This preseason he had a total of 2 tackles… Time to move on… There were guys that killed special teams in limited work
Houston Bates & Terrance Plummer honorable mention so the team can afford to move forward w/o Golston… We need a guy like Phil Taylor… If u know anything about 3-4 defense u know the most important player is the NT everything starts with the push up the middle

    • abanig - Sep 6, 2015 at 5:26 AM

I could see replacing Golston with Phil Taylor, but I believe Chris Baker is quicker and more versatile than Phil Taylor. Still, if we signed Taylor, he could back up Knighton and be our NT of the future if he improves.

I think the skins should cut Nsekhe and sign Bear Pascoe to be our blocking TE. Pascoe is an awesome blocker.

Who gives a damn about fiasco RGMe and the concussions. Mclovins wife was only defending her husband, I would for my wife that kind of spunk… Snyder knows hes on his last string with the fans and he was lucky to get Mclovin….the quarterback situation will sort itself out, and yes we are better than last year but that doesnt matter…Its about 2016 and the future…its going to take one more draft to build some quality depth and get rid of these bad old contracts on the team.. Remember the old hogs, our heritage, and f..k the media except the beat writers who their tails off to give us every up to minute detail we love to read…Ignore the negatives and lets focus on the team and give Kirk Cousins every ounce of support..Hail to tge Redskins!!
