Redskins OTA report 06.09.15–Defense

Jun 9, 2015, 4:04 PM EDT

Robinson-Joe Barry OTA

Although the weather in Ashburn was warm and sunny, the Redskins had to move their OTA practice inside on Tuesday as torrential rains the night before had left the grass fields in bad shape. Here is what I saw on defense and special teams. I’ll have the observations on offense up tomorrow.

—We had the Dashon Goldson-Duke Ihenacho combo at safety with the first team as we have had for most of the OTAs that have been open to the media. When they signed Jeron Johnson it was thought that the strong safety job was his to lose. It’s probably to early to say he has lost it but Ihenacho, who started for the Broncos in the Super Bowl against Johnson’s Seahawks, is giving him a run for his money.

—It did look like Johnson lined up a few times at free safety. It’s important that someone who is likely to make the roster can do that since Goldson needs a backup. There isn’t another natural free safety on the roster.

—On a couple of snaps in 11 on 11 Stephen Paea lined up at nose tackle and Terrance Knighton shifted out to left end. I think the message is that anyone along the defensive line could line up anywhere at any time.

—Tress Way has had some impressive punts but not many like one he booted today. From one sideline he launched one across the field towards the other sideline. In the practice bubble there are hanging lights along the sides that are about 50 feet up from the field. Way’s punt hit one of the lights. I’m not going to do the math but the kick was still at a height of about 50 feet after covering 53 yards (the width of the football field). He also booted a punt going in the conventional direction that traveled 68 yards in the air.

—Lined up to return kickoffs were Trey Williams, Andre Roberts, Jamison Crowder, Rashad Ross, and Chris Thompson.

—Mike linebacker Keenan Robinson was a spectator at practice. He later said that he was dealing with a minor injury and would be back to practice tomorrow.

—The Redskins’ two top draft picks lined up opposite each other for a while and the later pick had the upper hand over the first pick. Preston Smith moved around Brandon Scherff both inside and outside in the space of a few plays.

—Ryan Kerrigan, who is out until training camp after a knee procedure, was working on hand techniques with and assistant coach.

The play of the day was when kai forbath connected with spencer long for a touchdown pass…and breeland returning punts is stupid idk why hes wasting his time doing that…I herd preston smith been disruptive this off-season so far and putting in the extra work to become great at his job…jay gruden told Preston smith he want to see that southerness to come out and he replyed coach Im just tryna get the playbook down pack first….so preston smith might have a lil cockiness in his game and we just dont know…why ppl hate the Seattle Seahawks because they cocky but also they play backs it up….I hope perry Riley dont start this year especially under this new defense I hear hes been practicing with the second unit I hope it stays that way…they said martell spaights struggle to cover tight ends and running backs it cant be any worst then what perry Riley did last year

Alfred Morris dropped alot of passes in practice today after the last drop from alfred morris rg3 went 5 out of 5 but couldnt cash in on a touchdown he connected with ryan grant back to back this all happened in a 1 min drill…colt mccoy and kirk cousins looked terrible today guess they just didnt want to practice today…but after rg3 fail to score to score a touchdown in the red zone they raned some red zone drills and rg3 connected with ryan grant in the corner for a touchdown

The passes that was suppose to be for alfred morris and Chris Thompson went to matt jones and from previous weeks matt jones wasnt getting as much passes thrown to him but that change today…ppl gotta just face the facts alfred Morris is a one trick pony he cant do multiple things that can take pressure off the QB….Jamison Crowder showed his speed and quickness

Not one story came out today about how martrell spaights look in practice or tevin Mitchell …havent herd much about matt jones either but thanks to jay gruden matt jones picking things up really well in pass protection running pass routes and getting the ball out the back field…my prediction is that ryan grant start with desean jackson and p.garcon.. theres just to much praise coming out of practice about ryan grant and Jamison Crowder but ryan grant has the edge simply cause hes in his second year and that he dont got a suspension looming over his head even tho I dont think he will get suspended…rg3 making progress while colt and kirk fall apart…all I know is scot m. And jay gruden Wont be happy when they look at tape over the break those guys should be pushing.rg3 for playing time

I keep feeling that Ryan Grant will play the slot and maybe for long term. I know he doesn’t have ideal speed for that position but his route running and sure hands make up for the lack of ideal speed. Archives
