Need to Know: Redskins news roundup–Jackson doesn’t play for you

Jun 7, 2015, 5:16 AM EDT

Jackson OTAs bubble

Here is what you need to know on this Sunday, June 7, 9 days before the Washington Redskins start minicamp.

The week that was

A look back at what we learned the past week and what it means:

—Josh LeRibeus to work at center—This is not a position change but cross training that could keep LeRibeus on the roster. With Chris Chester gone the Redskins need a player who can will in should Kory Lichtensteiger get hurt during a game. They need someone who is active on game day so they need a player who is a reserve at another position. This could get LeRibeus, who is going into the last year of his rookie contract, a shot at making the team and making the game day 46 on a regular basis. If he struggles learning center he would be very much on the roster bubble.

—Jamison Crowder implicated in domestic violence on his own Instagram account—There isn’t much to say about this right now because we don’t know much except for what popped up on the rookie receiver’s since-deleted account. It is worth keeping an eye on because of how tough the NFL is when it comes to domestic violence. A six-game suspension would not be a good way for Crowder to start off his NFL career. But we’re going to have to wait and see how this develops.

—DeSean Jackson doesn’t care what you think about his OTA absence—“As far as any critics or anybody else, I don’t play for them and I don’t worry about them,” Jackson said Wednesday when asked about missing last week’s three OTA sessions. This “controversy” appears to be over.

—Trent Williams out until camp—The Pro Bowl left tackle can’t shake an injury to an ankle ligament that he suffered during the season. This doesn’t appear to be anything to worry about a whole lot, especially since no surgery will be required. But Williams appeared on the injury report 10 times and missed a start last year so his general health is something to monitor.

—Jordan Reed has knee “procedure”—The tight end has missed 12 games in his two NFL seasons so even though what was done to his knee apparently is minor, his health is always a cause for concern. There’s certainly no reason to think that he won’t be ready to go when training camp starts but how long he’ll last after that remains to be seen.

—It’s been 161 days since the Redskins played a game. It will be 98 days until they play the Dolphins at FedEx Field.

Days until: Redskins minicamp starts 9; Redskins training camp starts 53; Thursday night Redskins @ Giants 109

Desean just showed the Washington redskins fans and players how jacked he is for this season to start!!!

  2. sidepull - Jun 7, 2015 at 9:15 AM

I think they knew what they were getting when they signed Jackson. I also think they need to worry more about Crowder than they do about Jackson. Crowder has some real accusations to defend that can impact his career in the NFL. People need to quit riding Jackson, he shouldn’t have to defend himself as long as he shows up on game day ready to play, which I believe he will. The media looks for anything to blow out of proportion with this guy.

    • brucefan1 - Jun 7, 2015 at 10:51 AM

      So right, sidepull

I feel that Jackson’s attitude on this topic is the one he should take.

These guys can NOT be letting whatever muck-raking, rating-hungry “reporters” (and I use that term loosely) and we fickle, irrational, fair-weather, ill-informed fans say about them bother them ONE bit!

The only judgements they should concern themselves with are those of their bosses, coaches, and teammates.

The media agendas & fan reactions should strictly be for the entertainment of the fans, and the fans alone. The players should not pay a darn bit of attention to any of it.

  3. skinsgame - Jun 7, 2015 at 9:25 AM

I have seen several stories that allege fans complaining about Jacksons absences from OTA’s. However, I’ve not actually ever read a fan complaining about Jackson and I read a fair amount of comments over several sites. I’m sure that someone out there wasn’t happy that Jackson didn’t show up but I never saw it even once and the whole story smells like a controversy the media is trying to give legs to.

  4. mr.moneylover - Jun 7, 2015 at 9:39 AM

I think the Jamison Crowder situation means andre roberts get the slot postion by default witch is not good at all for the offense I also her’d he was going to have a big part in redskins offense this year because how fast he picking up the offense…its sad he got a 6 game suspension looming over his head…I hope ryan grant get the start instead andre roberts but I think they will go with a vet instead…can we all agree that jay gruden is not telling everything to the media first he said there will not be no joint practices in training camp now there will be with the Houston texans and redskins are going to appear on some hard knocks episodes according to sources

    • mr.moneylover - Jun 7, 2015 at 9:56 AM

The desean jackson situation is old…unlike the rest of our wide receivers hes a threat that teams fear…I actually like collin lockett as our fourth wide receiver and I forgot the other wide receiver name I think his name rahsad ross who also had a great preseason last year but ended up bein cut and redskins signed him back at the end of the season

    • Skulb - Jun 7, 2015 at 10:55 AM

Still, innocent until proven guilty right. Not guilty by default, no trial necessary.

      • rtcwon - Jun 7, 2015 at 12:28 PM

Not according to the new NFL personal conduct policy, even an accusation can subject a player to discipline.

I guess I’m in the minority that doesn’t give a crap what players do off the field. If a court of law doesn’t have them in jail, let them play.

        • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 1:57 PM

If the story on Crowder is fraudulent then he needs to dispel this on quickly. The rookie needs to be out there practicing with a clear head. The longer the questions fester the worst the perception will get.

        • Skulb - Jun 7, 2015 at 2:29 PM

Well I`m gonna continue to regard him as innocent and these rumors nothing but slander until otherwise proven in court. Too easy to just up and accuse people of things like this on social media.

        • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 5:23 PM

I completely agree with you skulb and if these are false rumors then I wish nothing but the worst for the individual who conjured it. I just don’t want this to cause any damage to his career if he is innocent.

      • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 1:54 PM

“Still, innocent until proven guilty right.” – Only in a court of law. The court of public opinion and rtcwon accurately stated the NFL is weighed on a far less stringent judgement

        • bangkokben - Jun 7, 2015 at 4:22 PM

Crowder was at Redskins charity event at Walter Reed on Friday. So the organization didn’t feel it necessary to distance him from that..for whatever that means. Could be good news; could be the organization failing to see the seriousness of the situation. Who knows? I believe the woman is a disgruntled ex that wants some form of revenge. As to the context of the pictures, who knows? There are many plausible scenarios. Some would incriminate; some would exonerate.

        • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 5:25 PM

Thanks for the extra tidbit on Crowder’s appearance. It’s encouraging to see he isn’t being hidden from the public eye.

    • Carl Gray - Jun 7, 2015 at 12:26 PM

Crowder will not get charged with anything. It’s very obvious that someone hacked into his account and made false claims.

      • skinsgame - Jun 7, 2015 at 1:44 PM

Why is it “very obvious”? Admittedly, I haven’t looked into the reports at all. Is there a report other than the ones we’ve all seen already?

      • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 2:03 PM

The problem I think Carl is the silence on this. He needs to make a public statement with confirmed reports that it was hacked ASAP. Typically hacked accounts are quickly confirmed. I’m don’t want to imply Crowder has done anything wrong. However, the lack of reaction to this claim is a concern.

        • bangkokben - Jun 7, 2015 at 4:23 PM

Hacked? I doubt it. An ex having the password and using it without permission. That’s very likely.

        • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 5:27 PM

That’s the scenario I’d expect as well. That’s why you never share your passwords even with your wife :) However, it was reported Crowder stated his account was hacked so I was just going by his literal response.

  5. eaglomaniac - Jun 7, 2015 at 11:48 AM

    Divas will always be Divas.

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 2:11 PM

All this diva has done since being a Redskin is scored touchdowns and made catches in huge chunks. He is the only known game day offensive threat we have right now. So not attending a voluntary workout is to be expected from a proven player that is an assured starter. There were plenty of other WRs struggling to make the team that needed the work.

  6. mrhart76 - Jun 7, 2015 at 11:54 AM

Jackson shows up on game days and puts fear into the defense. He’s a Vet. He runs deep and catches bombs and that’s pretty much it. So he doesn’t need the OTAS. Not as much as the youngsters trying to make the team. Dude can pretty much just show up for the first game and be better than all the other receivers we have .

  7. 214hof - Jun 7, 2015 at 12:27 PM

No news is good news on the Crowder topic. Looks like a smear campaign to me. Probably broke up with that girl after the draft.

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 2:16 PM

Quite the opposite IMO. Where is Crowder with an official confirmation on the hacked account claimed or where is his girlfriend or ex who could have stepped up by now and reported publically that it was not her that sent the Instagram?

The slightest of concerns is if it is his ex-girl out for revenge making a bogus claim, that could be enough for an NFL suspension.

      • Skulb - Jun 7, 2015 at 3:58 PM

Hell hath no fury and all that

I`d wait with this one. All sorts of people behave badly, including women. As long as it`s just on Twitter I don`t even care. Leave the guy alone. We have a court system for a reason and people shouldn`t be condemned in public without a chance to be heard fairly. If he really is guilty then this stupid woman should go to the police and file charges, not post on Twitter. Why hasn`t she done that?

        • 214hof - Jun 7, 2015 at 4:28 PM

          That’s what I’m sayin’ Skulb.

Ppl are blowing this out of proportion. No tangible evidence was given either way. Wait a see approach on my behalf. Always two sides to every story.

  8. Redskins_USA's Team - Jun 7, 2015 at 1:23 PM

As long as DeSean keeps tearing it up on the field, he should get some leniency to do what he wants/needs to. We’re talking a couple OTA’s, not practice…People talking smack about his absence need to get a grip–DeSean isn’t the big name who needs to be putting in extra work to make sure he’s ready. He consistently shows up BIG on game days and that’s because of all the hard work he puts in.

Crowder–you hope someone hacked his account. If not obviously this is something completely different, but we’ll see–innocent until proven guilty. At some point, based on how much drama unfolds around the league via social media, I think in the future it is very possible we see teams including things like “no public social media accounts” for rookies during their rookie season. Seems to be a distraction and liability that could be avoided. If Crowders situation is more than a hack, that’s different. But if it is just a hack, I think that’s a perfect example of why rookies shouldn’t have social media–unfair pressure on him when he shouldn’t have to worry about all that noise and just focus on his work.

Has it only been 16 days since last skins game?! Lol :) Seems a lil bit longer than that!

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 2:23 PM

I like your idea of rookies and players in general not exposing themselves to social media accounts. It would be wise for them to minimize public exposure. However, I’m not sure teams can legally force players to not have these accounts. It seems like it would violate free speech but it wouldn’t be the first time communist run NFL has implemented overreaching restrictions.

  9. redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 1:49 PM

On LeRibeus playing reserve center…. “They need someone who is active on game day so they need a player who is a reserve at another position. “.

I hope this works out but LeRibeus needs to consistently demonstrate high level work ethics to survive as a reserve on multiple positions for this team. Rich I know you’ve been critical of LeRibeus conditioning in the past. It’d be great if you could comment on the current shape he came in on for OTAs.

Trent Williams is a warrior …nm

On DJ, I’ll pretend I didn’t read that one. Any critics out there need to understand what voluntary means before they continue to drum up this unnecessary drama.

  10. mr.moneylover - Jun 7, 2015 at 6:05 PM

Its good he deleted his account…but it only takes somebody to accuse him of abuse to get suspended 6 games…and some of these college guys deal with females thats only after they money if they refuse to give them money they will threat to end they career…just like jamis winston case the girl accept a money offer to go away and that made the investigators question her motives…my question is if he did do it why not go to the police instead of posting it on instagram and if she did go to the police im pretty sure Jamison Crowder will be locked up and there will be a legal investigation going on and when its a legal investigation im sure she can mess that up by posting it to the public instead of letting the lawyers and police do they job…I just question the accuser motives

    • mr.moneylover - Jun 7, 2015 at 6:11 PM

Plus he aint miss a practice so you can tell there is little to no legal investigation at all by the law…with a busted lip thats enough to put Jamison Crowder in jail and fact he aint miss a practice…I think it wont be enough to suspend Jamison Crowder but the NFL has they own legal system so you never know

    • redskinsnameisheretostay - Jun 7, 2015 at 8:03 PM

money you are on the money! The only question I have is has it really been confirmed no police report was filed?

I’ve been playing devils advocate here on this whole situation for the very reasons you made in your comment. I’d hate to see him unjustly suspended but that is the way of the NFL today.

      • mr.moneylover - Jun 7, 2015 at 10:36 PM

The police as far as we know havent been involved just the NFL…and right now Jamison Crowder havent been locked up

  11. Kevin - Jun 8, 2015 at 1:03 AM

Now that’s a headline Jason LaCanfora would be proud of. Keep up the good work! Archives
