Need to Know: Redskins should want Cooper, Gurley to land outside of division

Apr 22, 2015, 6:02 AM EDT

Amari-Cooper

Here is what you need to know on this Wednesday, April 22, eight days before the Washington Redskins go on the clock at the NFL draft.

Question of the day

A few days a week I’ll give an in-depth answer to a question submitted by a fan on my Twitter feed, via the Real Redskins Facebook page, or in the comments section here. On Twitter address the questions to me at @Rich_TandlerCSN with the #NTK hashtag. There will be a comment thread set up on the Facebook page and if you’re asking your question here, put “for NTK” at the start of the comment.

Excellent, fun kind of question, David. In fact, it’s so good that let’s triple up here and look at the player that Redskins fans don’t want to see go to each of their division rivals.

—Giants—Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama I’ve seen this in a few credible mock drafts and it would turn the New York wide receiver corps into a monster. Adding Cooper to Odell Beckham Jr. and a healthy Victor Cruz would give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares both when they’re asleep and when they’re awake. You don’t want them to get West Virginia WR Kevin White either. He’s not as polished but he could be better.

—Eagles—Landon Collins, S, Alabama I’m excluding the possibility of another wild Chip Kelly move, a trade up for Marcus Mariota. I think that’s still possible but highly unlikely. Yes, I’ve heard that Collins is not really a fit for the Philly defense but I think with the severe shortage of safeties in this draft they just might take him and figure out how to make it work, thus filling the biggest hole in Philly’s secondary.

—Cowboys—Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia He might not last until the Cowboys’ pick at No. 27 but Jerry will not afraid to throw in some picks to move up assuming the back’s injured knee checks out. If this happens the best running team in the NFL will have lost the league’s leading rusher (DeMarco Murray) and likely end up better off.

Timeline

—It’s been 115 days since the Redskins played a game. It will be about 144 days until they play another one.

Days until: 2015 NFL Draft 8; Redskins minicamp starts 56; Redskins training camp starts 99

I don’t want Kelly to get Mariota.

    • skinsgame - Apr 22, 2015 at 8:30 AM

I’m hoping he goes to Philly and it turns out like Spurrier with Danny Wuerffel and Shane Matthews. Kelly is handling the Eagles much in the same way Spurrier handled the Redskins and Mariota would be the icing on that cake.

      • bangkokben - Apr 22, 2015 at 9:13 AM

The big difference is that Kelly has won and Spurrier hasn’t and that nobody wanted Matthews or Weurffel while Mariota is regarded a top five pick.

          Oh, details, details …

    • cmehustle - Apr 22, 2015 at 10:38 AM

I do. I would love for them to give up their future for a qb at number two. Wait, ouch the memories…..

I don’t think Collins is that great. A solid NFL in-the-box safety, best case.

I don’t want the Giants to get White or Cooper, either. But both ought to be off the board by pick 9.

I suppose the Cowboys could get Gurley if he falls low enough for them to get him with their 1st and 2nd picks. But if Gurley goes in the top 16, that isn’t enough.

Def feel the same about Giants getting one of those WR’s! MAN

  3. captblood3000 - Apr 22, 2015 at 8:28 AM

Because the Giants don’t have a true left tackle, they have three starters (Beatty, Pugh, Richberg) who don’t play their best positions. They also pick low enough to pick up one of the top edge rushers.

    • abanig - Apr 22, 2015 at 10:52 AM

I agree, I see the Giants taking Scherff

      • captblood3000 - Apr 22, 2015 at 11:38 PM

        I see them taking Flowers.

    • ET - Apr 22, 2015 at 12:03 PM

Number 9 is a tough spot, just like #5. Sherff, Collins, Dupree—the Giants will probably have a lot of good options, even if the top two WRs are already taken. I shudder to think about a Collins / Beckham or White / Beckham tandem, but some extra beef upfront would clearly help the Giants as well.

  4. obxskins - Apr 22, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Imagine the Giants getting one of those wrs to go with the 2 they already have..man!!! or the cowgirls getting some type of running back to replace Murray to run behind that line..we best be able to get to QB and cover down field..do like the schedule though, Something about the Rams that is starting to get to me..must go to game from the Outer Banks guys,#HTTR!!

  5. bangkokben - Apr 22, 2015 at 9:16 AM

How about that schedule? If “we’re” bad early then we’ll be bad all the way through but if we’re good early it will be wait and see.

  6. renhoekk2 - Apr 22, 2015 at 9:51 AM

As fans of a 4 win team that followed a 3 win season, we should not be looking at ANY game on the schedule as a likely win. The truth is the Skins have 16 tough and losable games next season. Remember all of the other team’s fans are looking at their schedules and marking the Redskins down as a win.

    • bangkokben - Apr 22, 2015 at 12:58 PM

So true. Keim at the four letter – like all the beat there – have a game by game with score. Keim has the ‘skins going 6-10. The other beat writers on the ‘skins schedule have the ‘skins going 2-14 with only the Giants’ and Saints’ writers giving the ‘skins the victories. The Giants writer has the ‘skins winning 14-13 in the second game and the Saints’ writer has New Orleans (10-6) have a let down game when they play Washington (26-20). Moreover, nearly every writer has their team beating the ‘skins by 10 or more points.

    • wvredskins - Apr 22, 2015 at 3:50 PM

I dont look at it that way. I think there are 16 winnable games. We are going to be better. Tired of you suppose realist that think the redskins dont have a chance at all this year.

      • wvredskins - Apr 22, 2015 at 3:52 PM

Who cares what people think. If we get better play from the QB we will win some games PERIOD. There is alot of talent on the offense side of the ball and now that we have sharpened up the secondary and defense as a hole we will compete. And if we start winning games and get on a role anything is possible!

        • bangkokben - Apr 22, 2015 at 5:10 PM

wv, I appreciate your optimism. I tend to be the same way. By the time the season starts I’m sure I’ll be able to see a reason how the Redskins can win each of their games.

        • wvredskins - Apr 23, 2015 at 10:43 PM

I just look at it from a stand point as if I was back playing football again. You go into the season thinking you are going to win every game. If you have doubt then you have already lost. Thats just my mentality. And yeah I know I am just a fan. and you guys are fans also who are making realistic opinions based on the past and the way they played and what they have done to improve. BUT We can play with the Cowboys and any team on the schedule. The ? is Can RG get over the hump and become a complete passer or atleast make drastic improvements. We were in alot of games last year with REALLY poor play from the QB and the secondary and other areas. We had the opportunity to sweep the eagles a cpl plays here and there and we would have swept them. and then there were games where we looked really bad like against the poorest rams and bucs. We just got to get on a roll and thats all it takes. When a hole unit plays as one. Hopefully Gruden can get that unity!

  7. abanig - Apr 22, 2015 at 10:48 AM

I can’t see Cooper lasting till the Giants pick. I think he’ll go top 5, I’d actually be shocked if the Redskins passed on him if they stay @ 5.

I hope that Collins & Gurley don’t go to the Eagles and Cowboys, but I think that’s a strong possibility.

Hopefully, Collins will be drafted in the teens and won’t last till the Eagles Pick.

  8. skins1970 - Apr 22, 2015 at 12:47 PM

Amari Cooper won’t last that long he isn’t getting by the NY Jets if he is there at 6, I also the Giants would take Brandon Scherff even if Cooper was there.
