Need to Know: QB talk tops the Redskins’ week that was

Apr 11, 2015, 5:22 AM EDT

Connor-Halliday-passing

Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, April 11, 19 days before the Washington Redskins go on the clock at the NFL draft.

The week that was

Here are the top stories we covered this week and some thoughts on what they mean:

Scot McCloughan attends Connor Halliday workout It will be interesting to see how McCloughan handles the quarterback position in the draft. And not just in this one but over the years. When he was a scout with the Packers they took one almost every year; some became trade bait, others were camp fodder. But they kept on taking them. McCloughan didn’t do this in San Francisco but perhaps as Alex Smith struggled year after year he wished he did.

E. J. Biggers visits the Eagles There never seemed to be any chance that the Redskins would bring him back after he became a free agent. It was kind of funny as Redskins fans rooted for the Eagles to sign Biggers, a replacement-level player on his better days. The fans’ wishes were realized later in the day when the Eagles announced that they had signed him.

Marcus Mariota visit to Redskins Park cancelled There are many different ways to spin this one. Neither the Redskins nor Mariota’s camp will say who called off the visit. The guess here is that Mariota’s agent heard something that makes him certain that the Heisman winner will be off the board when the Redskins are on the clock and didn’t want to put his client through what would be a fruitless coast-to-coast trip.

Redskins announce preseason opponents This is an odd drip of information that the NFL gives us about a week or two before the full schedule is unveiled. The opponents and the order in which the games will be played were announced Thursday but exact dates and times don’t come out until the full schedule does. Redskins go to Baltimore for their Week 3 game for the second straight year.

RG3 on Gruden: Not my job to judge to coach The quote that made the headline was Griffin saying of Jay Gruden, “My job is not to characterize or judge him as a coach.” That was parsed and interpreted all over the Internet and in the talk world. The most important thing that Griffin said about Gruden, however, was, “We both want to win.” If that happens, the scrutiny that virtually everything that Griffin says will magically disappear.

Timeline

—It’s been 104 days since the Redskins played a game. It will be about 155 days until they play another one.

Days until: Redskins offseason workouts start 9; 2015 NFL Draft 19; Redskins training camp starts 110

I’m pretty certain Mariota will be gone well before pick 5, too.

Someone should buy these ‘experts’ a clue.

Charles Davis, March 25: 10th pick
Bucky Brooks, March 30: 17th pick
Brian Baldinger, April 6: 20th pick
Lance Zierlein, April 8: 12th pick

I think they shouldn’t underestimate the inflated value of a QB in a QB hungry league. There will be many reach picks in this draft. Look at all of the teams still searching for answers at the QB spot (I guess Washington should be included).

Although, I agree that Mariota is likely gone. Clowning these experts for not having your opinion is silliness. Last year there was talk about Johnny Football going #2 and that if he dropped Dallas would pick him. Surely you remember where he landed. Of course, every draft Aaron Rodgers is brought up. So for these guys to have them at different spots is not out of the realm of possibility. Furthermore, some experts aren’t as concerned with what number they land for their mocks – since they don’t factor in trades – but are predicting the team in which they think the player will end up with. For instance, Charles Davis may think the Rams will select MM and simply lists in his mock with the 10th pick.

I say it goes Winston (1) and Mariota(2) who are, in my opinion, barely top 10 players in this draft. That leaves us with an opportunity to get a great player at #5 or more likely to move down into the early teens but still get a top 7 or 8 player on our board.

I agree 100%. I would love to move down in this draft and get more picks. We need a huge accumulation of young talent, but also just young players who are hungry and WANT to play special teams. It doesnt get talked about much but our special teams have been a disaster these past few years.

Scot m. Will pull the plug on drafting mariota he did it in the pass with the packers when brett Favre was the QB he ended up drafting Aaron Rodgers and by him putting the word out there it did two things….1. It made other team scouts revaluate they scouting 2. It kinda put pressure on other teams to workout a deal to try trade up to get marcus mariota witch redskins will benefit from redskins will have good options at #5 …they will have really good talent at #5 drafting dante flower jr. Amari cooper, kevin white, Leonard williams…raiders looking to draft wide receivers so its possible we can get dante flower jr. Or Leonard williams….something just not right with them cancelling the mariota visit or another reason is that a trade in a work for redskins to trade back in the draft to pickup extra picks

What a coincidence…….The QB in the picture at top, Connor Halliday, is the guy I have been saying for weeks that I hope the skins use a late pick on.

Halliday is getting more attention these days. I’ll bet he goes in the third round.

    • jtaylor68 - Apr 12, 2015 at 4:01 PM

I have been hoping he would stay under the radar for us in the 7th but your right in that there has been more chatter about him. I just don’t see him goin before the 5th and I would hate to lose that bet with you.

      • jtaylor68 - Apr 12, 2015 at 4:10 PM

Speaking of attention……..just read article that Connor is visiting Ashburn next week. One step closer maybe?
