Need to Know: Examining the Redskins’ pre-free agency depth chart

Mar 10, 2015, 6:02 AM EDT

Here is what you need to know on this Tuesday, March 10, the day the Washington Redskins and the rest of the NFL start free agency. It officially gets underway at 4 p.m.

Depth chart pre-free agency

With free agency starting in just a few hours let’s take a look at the Redskins’ depth chart as is stands now. We’ll bookmark this and look back prior when we hit other milestones—the draft, the start of training camp, the start of the season—to compare and examine changes.

Starters in bold

QB: Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins
This is the spotlight position this year; it’s make or break for both of these players. A third QB will need to be acquired at some point.

RB: Alfred Morris, Darrel Young, Chris Thompson, Silas Redd
Morris and Young are going into the last year of their contracts and Redd and Thompson are very much unproven. If Roy Helu leaves as a free agent we can look for another back to be added in free agency or the draft.

WR: DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garçon, Andre Roberts, Ryan Grant
The team will need a wide receiver. We don’t know for certain how much interest there is in bringing back Santana Moss and/or Leonard Hankerson.

TE: Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, Logan Paulsen
Paul has re-signed. There has been chatter that they might try to replace Paulsen as the blocking tight end but there hasn’t been much movement at this point.

OL: Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Kory Lichtensteiger, Chris Chester, Tom Compton, Spencer Long, Morgan Moses, Josh LeRibeus, Tyler Larsen, Xavier Nixon
There probably won’t be as much change here between now and the start of the season as some would like. But there are likely to be some new faces and some competition for positions, especially on the right side. C Tyler Larsen and T Xavier Nixon are street free agent pickups who will be worth watching.

DL: Jason Hatcher, Stephen Paea, Chris Baker, Ricky Jean-Francois, Kedric Golston, Frank Kearse
This is just a guess at how they’d line up if the season started today; we will have to see what Joe Barry does with the scheme. They aren’t done here yet if Jarvis Jenkins leaves in free agency. There are a few intriguing prospects like NT Robert Thomas and the massive LaKendrick Ross (6-4, 350) to keep an eye on.

LB: Trent Murphy, Ryan Kerrigan, Perry Riley, Keenan Robinson, Will Compton, Adam Hayward, Jackson Jeffcoat, Steve Beauharnais
There is plenty of talk that the top draft choice will line up at outside linebacker so this could well change substantially. It will be interesting to see if the team tries to bring in veteran linebackers to bolster special teams like they did last year (Hayward, Akeem Jordan, Darryl Sharpton) or if they go with younger players like Jeffcoat.

DB: David Amerson, Bashaud Breeland, Phillip Thomas, Vacant, DeAngelo Hall, Tracy Porter, Akeem Davis, Duke Ihenacho
The Redskins need to find someone to line up at free safety and at least a Plan B in case Thomas can’t get it done at strong. Between free agency and the draft as many as five defensive backs could be added.

Specialists: PK Kai Forbath, P Tress Way, LS Nick Sundberg
Forbath is back on a restricted free agent tender so this is set, although it wouldn’t be surprising if a competitor for Forbath will be brought in. The team also could add a return specialist, an area that has been hurting for a few years.

—It’s been 72 days since the Redskins played a game. It will be about 187 days until they play another one.

Days until: Redskins offseason workouts start 41; 2015 NFL Draft 51; Redskins training camp starts 142

Hey Phillip Robinson, if you think you’e going to come in here and talk about me or anyone else like that you’re wrong. You are pushing for the quickest ban in Real Redskins history. Quit whining, act like an adult. Nobody likes a troll.

    Thank you.

    • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 7:19 AM

Last week Diana said we were gonna get inpatui, jayson la confora said we just about had vic fangio signed. Your have said things that weren’t accurate. I have the right to voice my opinions!

      • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 7:21 AM

No, it’s my name at the top of the blog here. If in my opinion you are not conducting yourself properly you are gone. End of story.

      • kjp0810 - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:28 AM

Phillip, Diana said that before the tampering period the skins were one of the “favorites” to sign Iupati and that they had “strong interest.” I hardly call that inaccurate reporting. There was probably a lot more interest once the tampering period started and the price tag got to high. La Canfora said he “expected” Fangio to sign with Skins. Fangio was probably 50/50 between choosing Bears and Skins. La Canfora was making more of a guess than a claim.

        • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:36 AM

Stop making excuses for the reports. Just get ready to be disappointed after free agency ends and after the draft. Rg3 might as well put his house up for sale now or buy his burial plot cause he has no one to protect him. Even trent Williams is starting to give out!

        • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:52 AM

Burial plot. I swear you sound like a cowboy fan not a redskins fan. Why don’t you do is all a favor and leave the blog you are annoying! Your coming up with excuses… Everyone knows that reporting isn’t always accurate or have you been living under a rock

    • cowboyhater - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:04 AM

Ban him Rich…..I generally don’t fall for trolling, but this guy has been doing this for some time now, and I even had to respond to one of his nonsense blogs. No one on here respects the opinion of this guy, nor does he respect this type of forum. Good bye Phillip (or whatever your name is….)

  2. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 7:25 AM

Ok I m sorry Rich! It’s just frustrating and I don t agree with this Redskins free agency but if you think this is bad wait until the draft! Redskins fans are gonna really be shaking their heads!

    • ET - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:59 AM

Jesus, dude, you need to chill out. We have our first real GM in years and you haven’t given him a chance to do his frakking job, at which by all accounts he is very good.

  3. kenlinkins - Mar 10, 2015 at 7:45 AM

Rich: I was shocked to see DB “Vacant” still listed on the depth chart. In 2014 Redskins fans saw way too much of DB “Vacant”. At times we saw him in the pass rush, other times DB “Vacant” was covering TE’s, but we mostly saw DB “Vacant’ covering WR down field. My hope was that DB “Vacant” would be a “Cap Cut” but it seems the Redskins have not yet seemed fit to remove DB “Vacant” from the game plan. Maybe they are waiting for Training Camp to remove DB “Vacant” from the line up. Many of us Redskins fans have see way to much of DB “Vacant” and hope that the new GM and DC can replace DB “Vacant” with a well timed draft pick or Free Agent.

    • cmehustle - Mar 10, 2015 at 12:30 PM

Unfortunately we’ve seen safety vacant since 07.

  4. thankslittlebrandonbanks - Mar 10, 2015 at 7:59 AM

    What about Duke Ihenacho ?

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:32 AM

Oversight. Added him to the reserves.

    • kenlinkins - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:34 AM

IMO the Redskins will bring both Merriweather and Ihenacho back for the 90 man roster. I also feel they will draft a Safety by the 5th pick. With a new DC in town anything can happen, like moving D. Hall or Amerson into a Safety spot or Thomas might be able to handle a spot. It is a real problem area. The good news is that with the 5th pick the Redskins should be able to fix one problem area for the next 5 years. Be it Safety (Collins), Pass Rush (long list), O-Line (Longer list) or CB (short list), the Redskins will be better in one area in 2015.

  5. kjp0810 - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:15 AM

That’s right. I heard he re-signed last Wednesday.

  6. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:20 AM

Rich I have a question since we are only getting maybe 2players in free agency a DT and a safety what will the Redskins do with the remaining cap money?

    • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:23 AM

Do you have the inside track on who we are getting? Can you just stop crying and wait like the rest of the true redskins fans. You don’t know what he (the gm) is gonna do so relax

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:34 AM

Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen will spend it on ale and whores.

Or maybe they will roll it over to next year when they have a lot of key free agents or use it this year for extensions for Kerrigan and/or Trent Williams.

      • gonavybeatarmy - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:55 AM

        Simply, hilarious!

      • timwillhidetimwillhide - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:50 AM

        That was Awesome.

      • tideskin - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:30 AM

  7. Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:21 AM

I pray off the day he gets banned, just kidding but I think duck may step up and play starter. But I like what the tedskins are doing so far. Not breaking the bank on players. Trying to find depth. I think the pea guy is a good pick up. He can play end or beef up and play nose. But I think baker will play nose

    • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:26 AM

I be been a Redskins fan since the 80?stephan I bet you can t even name the offensive line for the hogs in the 80s and 90s

      • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:48 AM

If you are a so called fan why are you crying.. Your out here calling rich on his facts and he works for the team! Just relax and wait

        • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:56 AM

I do not work for the Redskins. My paycheck says “NBC Sports” and I can write anything I want to.

        • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:02 AM

I stand corrected and I never said you couldn’t, I know you can

        • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:56 AM

Have you named all the hogs yet Stephen?

        • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:08 AM

I know who the hogs are but I’m not about to entertain you with my knowledge for football. Like I said before you are whining to much? How can you call yourself a redskins fan but your bashing the coach, gm, etc… It’s sad

  8. mr.moneylover - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:37 AM

I dont think david amerson will get the start this year I see somebody else beating him out just like I see somebody else taking chris chester spot if they dont get cut…I dont see chris baker starting as well I see ricky jean francois starting next to stephen paea and jason hatcher

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:14 AM

This was going to be my question for Rich.

Amerson did not look good to me last year…way too many mental errors.

  9. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:47 AM

Rg3 might as well sell his house now and get out of town or buy his burial plot now cause he has no one to protect him. And if you think this is bad wait until the draft. I will forever be a Rg3 fan no matter you he land cause you never had a chance Robert. You didn’t inherite the teams that Andrew luck or Russell Wilson did. You never got a dominant offensive line in which every franchise quaterback deserves. The reason for that is before you got drafted the skins neglected the offensive line right after the hogs left and still to this day. You have a coach in Jay Gruden who is a know it all rookie head coach that is jelous that you are a popular person more than he is. With all that said I appreciated your services Rg3.

    • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:54 AM

Your not a fan your just a redskins hater!

      • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 8:57 AM

Name all the Redskins past Quaterbacks Stephen if your a real fan

        • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Stephen if your a real fan why when the team moved from Boston did they change the name from the Boston Braves to the Washington Redskins. Explain it if your a real fan?

        • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:00 AM

Guys, nobody is interested in who is a bigger fan. If you want to go back and forth like this then exchange emails or texts or something. Take if off of here, nobody cares.

Just make your point. Everyone can judge who knows what they are talking about from there. Thanks.

        • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:11 AM

Ten steps ahead of you rich.. But any news on pot roast or a safety

  10. deepball1 - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:00 AM

I am praying that the Redskins have not replaced lightweight nose tackle Cofield with a lighter weight Paea. To go from a 306 pound nose tackle to a 303 pound nose tackle and expect better run stuff performance, well, that is a disastrous philosophy so I hoping that is not the philosphy.

Is Pot Roast Terrance from Denver still a possibility or is Dan Williams still a target for Nose Tackle? Because I really hated watching Dallas run straight up the middle in that last game of the season. So I will be watching the reports this week to see if the Skins are serious about stopping that Dallas offensive line and running game.

    • skins4lyfe - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:20 AM

Rich I see a few more acquisition to the d line and probably two or three more safeties added before the draft. I believe the strategy is to get the beef in free agency and the play makers in the draft. If this is the thought then I think we are headed in the right direction. If we are able to land pot roast then I believe we will be in good shape on the d line . My question to u Rich is looking at salary and the ability of the two players coming in on the d line how do they compare to the two men they replaced? In your opinion

    • timwillhidetimwillhide - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:58 AM

Paea is not smaller than Cofield. They are about the same size except Paea is a little more stout and stronger. Cofield is taller so the little extra weight evens out.

    • ET - Mar 10, 2015 at 12:24 PM

This may or may not be a real issue—if the Skins are really going to use a one-gap 3-4 as reported, my understanding is battleship size is less important than quickness in hitting the assigned gap.

  11. vtsquirm - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:16 AM

i sure would feel a whole lot better if we signed a new RT today…

    • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:21 AM

      Me too!

  12. bluedog22 - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:16 AM

Rich thanks for continuing to do a great job! I like others think the Redskins should trade back if they cant get Williams or Fowler with the 5th pick. Not sure of the trade partner yet, but if somehow Cleveland is in play, that would be the home run. Unfortunately, I think Philly will trade with Jax to get Marriota. A sleeper I think in this whole draft that the skins should consider if trading back is Marcus Peters. We desperately need help at CB and this guy is gonna be the steal of the draft. The character issue on him is not a concern and they need more guys with attitude anyway! Him and Breeland would be as physical and talented young CB’s in the league by 2016. I think will learn a lot in FA and whether they sign another DT like Williams or Knighton as to their draft plans. If they get one of these guys, I “may” think of resigning Orakpo on a prove it deal with a lot of year 1 gtee $. I wouldnt be surprised at all to see Cofield back this Summer either. Keep an eye on Perriman with the 2nd round pick too. They need to find a replacement for Riley. It’s not out of possibility they resign Merriweather on the cheap too., regardless of how many/if any Safety’s are brought in on FA. I want Parker, Gilchrist, and Wisniewski as additional FA’s. One other thing that I think they will focus on is cap casualties that will be coming in the next few weeks/months. Someone like Ngota might be released.

  13. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:20 AM

Also Stephen the coach Jay Gruden should be bashed cause he refuses to play and develope young players. So Scot can draft who he wants but he is going to have to put a gun to gruden head to play them. For example Spencer long and Morgan Moses didn t play or get in in game enough last year. So fast forward a year to know. Now because of gruden we don t know what we have in them and if we should draft at their positions. Thanks a lot Jay!

    • murphsman - Mar 10, 2015 at 10:56 AM

Gruden doesn’t play the young guys? Wrong coach. Lol. We’re still waiting to see what Josh Leribeus can do, and we never got to see what Adam Gettis did. Also, didn’t Shanny originally draft Compton?

  14. bangkokben - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:36 AM

Morgan Moses went in for Tyler Polumbus one game last year and immediately wet the bed. Next we see Tom Compton and he remained their. Prior to that game there was a TON of chatter of “why isn’t Moses in there?” It became clearly evident why we hadn’t. ALL coaches need to see it consistently in practice. Don’t give this b.s. about being a gamer. When you get paid to do a job, you don’t work just one day a week but each day you get paid. Shouldn’t expect anything less from young players.

    • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:39 AM

You got to wonder what them and the scouts saw in him to draft him? Wow

    • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:41 AM

      What about spencer long?

  15. deepball1 - Mar 10, 2015 at 9:44 AM

Morgan Moses is huge but has heavy feet. He won’t make it as an NFL tackle because he can’t handle speed rushers but he could end up as a Guard where mobility is not as much a factor. Maybe Callahan will see that so they don’t just throw him away as a waster pick.

    • alextwrs - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:55 AM

I would love to see Moses develop into a road grader at guard.

    • captblood3000 - Mar 12, 2015 at 8:38 AM

Deepball1, there are plenty of scouting reports on Moses on the web from before the 2014 draft. Show me “heavy feet” in any of those reports, or any report that projects him to guard, as you do.

  16. brianjfrost06 - Mar 10, 2015 at 10:11 AM

I usually enjoy reading poeple’s opinions and comments after an article but this has turned into a personal battle.. soo lets get back to the team which is why we are here.

For the fist time in recent years this team imo is doing the right thing and being diligent in there evaluation of free agents. if we havent proven that throwing money at problems cant fix a team then you havent been a fan. This team is littered with holes on the depth chart that can not be recitfied in one free agency and one draft. Our new GM has the daunting task of rebuilding a once proud franchise and it will take time. Our biggest hole as i see it is finding out wich QB if any on the roster can lead this team back to relativity. I 100% agree that your offensive and defensive line our the cornerstone to a solid foundation when it comes to building a team. Scott is addressing the defensive line at this point becuase with the market and players available it is the most fiscally responsible route to go at this point. The moves to free up cap space and make the d line younger with the releases of Bowen and Coefield were warranted and with the addition of Francis and hopefully Paea we are just seeing the beggining of what could be a formidable front for the next several years. I dont think our offensive line will struggle as much as people expect, especially with the addtion of a solid free agent or darft pick for the right side. Please note that our quarterbacks did not do much to help the line by holding the ball to long and not making there proper reads quickly enough. I like Stefen Wisenski from oakland if the price was right and a stud right tackle from the draft which is loaded with prospects at that position. We Could then release Chester freeing up more cap space and let Leribus , Long , and Lichtesinger battle it out for right guard. I dont know if any of those guys are the long term solution at right tackle, but we have spent two relativly high draft picks on two of them so we need to let them compete. As far as saftey we have struggled since the untimely passing of Sean Taylor and are in need of a mojor upgrade. I would like to see Amerson moved to free saftey during ota’s and preseason to see if that is a viable option (seems more of his natural position in NFL) and pick a Marcus Peters type cb in the draft to pair with Breeland on the other side. which leaves are strong saftey postion still in flux. Again we cant fix everything in one year but we can hope Thomas pans out. With a strong d line and pass rush a our secondary’s weaknesses can be camoflauged.

Rich i appreciate your articles i lean in them constatly for information, and while i always dont agree with all points you make i do respect the work you put in…. HTTR!!!!

    • brianjfrost06 - Mar 10, 2015 at 10:15 AM

“i dont know if any of these guys are the long term solution at right guard”.. (not tackle)

    • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 10:30 AM

What aren t you getting you can t evaluate the Quaterback position with that offensive line. Three Quaterbacks came in and had in the end the same results. And is everyone sure that desean jackson and pierre garçon was always open? Or did they just assume they were open! Sometimes a receiver can look open and is not really open the DB can be baiting. The reason why RG3 holds on to the ball so long cause he is afraid to throw interception. He wants to be perfect. But you can put Joe montana and Tin Brady behind that line and you will get the same results. Even trent Williams is declining!

      • brianjfrost06 - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:22 AM

I disagree three qbs three different result Cousins per drop back took now where near the sacks griffin took nor did mcoy i am not a Griffin hater im basing it off facts. The line was not good at all but every sack that was taking was not there fault. that is all that point was.. when you hold the ball for 3 plus seconds in the nfl your sack rate goes up and his speed that was elite in college and pre knee injury is no longer there. he can not out run everyone in the nfl. to me when you outside the tackles and no one is open most sacks are the qbs fault becuase they have the option of throwing the ball out of bounds. while that may affect his completion percentage it does not count as an intercetption. but taking the sack becuase you indecisive sets you up for extremly hard 2nd and third down long yardage conversions.

        • Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:28 AM

Are the receivers getting open and creating seperation. They can think that but in reality they really aren’t!

      • bangkokben - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:23 AM

Tom Brady would’ve whipped that line in shape fast and won at least eight games. It’s not the line it’s the quarterbacks.

        • brianjfrost06 - Mar 10, 2015 at 12:05 PM

Desean lead the league in 20plus yards receptions and garcon still put up 70 plus catches so yes i think they are gettin open> but every play is not going to have your first option reciever getting wide open. Open in the nfl is not having 5 yards of seperation more like 1 to 2 the problem is you have a quarteback who now doubts his throws ie Griffin. Plus you couple that with him being taught in a one read system in college and you have him not progressing threw his reads. how many times was his second read a check down to a rb or te for a minimal gain? quite a few that should be your third or fourth read depending on the set. Im not trying to make this a bash grifin session but the facts are facts he has to get better with his footwork and trust his reads or he will be comsidered a huge bust for what we gave up for him.

  17. murphsman - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:00 AM

Did I miss something? Is Paea even officially a Redskin yet?

    • ifthethunderdontgetya™³²®© - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:11 AM

      No, but…

“NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the former Bears defensive tackle has told people that he will land with the Redskins when free agency launches Tuesday. ”

      • murphsman - Mar 11, 2015 at 6:46 PM

My point was I couldn’t figure out why Rich was including someone that wasn’t on the team yet

  18. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:35 AM

Everyone is either signing or resigning with teams. What the hell is this guy Scot doing we are losing everyone. And don’t tell me free agency hasn’t started cause it has!

    • murphsman - Mar 11, 2015 at 6:48 PM

So you’d rather go back to the Vinny days of throwing a ton of money at anyone that comes calling?

  19. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:39 AM

I can understand not wanting to spend a lot but this is rediculous! I don t even hear even talking about the Redskins!

    • Stephfan - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:47 AM

Seriously can u stop whinning, free agency hasn’t started. Just because teams are talking to players doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. Look at frank gore, they said he was going to eagles and now he might go to Indy… You need to relax because if you were the gm you would have signed all the high price players and not filled the many holes that this team has… Or maybe you didn’t notice the defense as a whole being garbage at best for the past 5 YEARS. Or the Oline being rookie at best for the past 5 years. Their are too many holes. Once he fills the holes then you go for the good ones next year.

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:51 AM

Phillips, there is commenting and there is whining. I know the difference. You are whining. Stop it or get banned. You are annoying everyone.

      > > >

    • st4hof - Mar 10, 2015 at 11:53 AM

Washington is finally holding their cards close to the vest. (no media leaks) I think it’s great not knowing what’s to come for a change. I’m content on letting it play out. “Officially” no one has signed a contract yet, just because a few of the big names FAs had their agents shake hands and kiss babies with teams not named WASHINGTON doesn’t mean the Skins aren’t doing anything in FA this year… Let McC do his job. Get a hold of yourself troll.

  20. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 12:32 PM

Now Brian bulaga is gone wow! Rich I don t why your upset cause every one is not gonna agree with this

    • brianjfrost06 - Mar 10, 2015 at 12:52 PM

Rich is commenting to you that way becuase of your woo is me attitude.. instead of you having contsructive debates with fact based arguements your simply trying to argue and pull on peoples heart strings for shock value. So a player the Redskins were never, ever going to sign is off the board. And I’m supposed to be upset how?

  21. kenlinkins - Mar 10, 2015 at 12:51 PM

Job One in 2015 is finding out who on this roster can play QB in the NFL? The Redskins have had 3 years to answer that question, and it is still hanging out there. Both Cousins and RG3 are in their last year of their first contract and one of these guys must step up and prove they can win in the NFL. You can not place even most of the blame on the O-Line for the QB problems, there are TE concerns, RB’s who can not block and three QB’s who won a total of 4 games in 2014 to go along with the O-Line (and that is before you even get to the Defense and Special Teams that hurt starting position). Every player MUST stand on his own merits and right now there is a long list of players who just do not belong as starters, back-ups, special teams members or maybe even do not belong in the NFL. Being overly concerned with just one area of the Redskins roster right now is not smart. This team has a long way to go at every position. You start by getting a little bit better with each move, get better week after week, month after month, year after year. This is what has been missing for far too long.

well said ken! couldnt agree more!

  22. Phillip Robinson - Mar 10, 2015 at 1:00 PM

Can I really tell everyone why i m upset. It is because there is no one else to sign free agency is over before it started. Either people went back to their old teams or they are going some where they just haven’t signed yet. Okay I ll wait and see but it’s no other names left!

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 10, 2015 at 1:12 PM

Was nice knowing you, Phillip. Unfortunately you kept whining and you are now annoyng and not informing and conversing. Bye.

Was hoping Washington would try to sign De’Norris Searcy but looks like he’s headed to Tennessee. I kno Washington is most likely going to sign at the very least one FA safety. Wonder how it will be… Mays? Gilchrist? I would rather they stay way from Branch the guy had only played 5 games in the last 2 seasons I don’t care what he upside is, he seems to be too much of a liability.

  24. bluedog22 - Mar 10, 2015 at 2:06 PM

I’m new to this board, but who cares if we “lose” FA? The reality is the team has to be built through the draft and everyone needs to stop drinking the kool aid and realize they need help at every position. What’s the point in signing a bunch of FA’s unless they are 1-2 yr stop gaps or are young and cheap? This team is 2-3 years minimum from truly competing for the playoffs. I know lighting can be caught in a bottle (2012), but that’s not sustained reality. The cupboard is bare. I’m liking that they’re talks of extending Kerrigan and Williams now. It makes sense if you know you’re going to resign them, do it now before the price gets even higher next year. It also sends a message to the team and the team leaders (as well as other FA’s down the road) that you take care of your own and not throw big $ at guys you didn’t draft. FA is really for the teams on the cusp or that are good. We aren’t there yet, but I think we could be with a couple good drafts and the QB situation playing out in 2015. My prediction is that they dont pick up Griffin’s option and he walks after next season and they resign Cousins to start and either be the “guy” or be the bridge to a new drafted QB in 2016.

    • st4hof - Mar 10, 2015 at 2:21 PM

Who said “lose” in free agency, I know I didn’t. Searcy is 26 and would be more then a “stop-gap player”. Agree with you on RG, don’t see Washington picking up the option. Can’t rule out that he stays healthy for a whole season and shows enough progression to earn another contract in D.C. (although it seems his best days are behind him)

      • bluedog22 - Mar 10, 2015 at 2:33 PM

I was referring to the whiner who got booted, not you.

        • st4hof - Mar 10, 2015 at 2:36 PM

          Aah… Apologies.

  25. bluedog22 - Mar 10, 2015 at 2:41 PM

Rich any info on the guy Barclay that GB just tendered after they signed Belauga? Sounds like a decent RFA option. Read he can play either Guard spot and right Tackle. He started at RT for an entire season in 2013. Young, cheap, certainly coached and developed under a great organization. Skins wouldn’t have to give up any compensation if GB didnt match. Why wouldn’t they?!!

  26. thankslittlebrandonbanks - Mar 10, 2015 at 2:44 PM

GM little Brandon banks likes Pierre Thomas as a solid, cheap pick up if Helu leaves

  27. brianjfrost06 - Mar 10, 2015 at 3:11 PM

Jeron johnson imo is who we should take a hard look at in free agency for safety. young talented has some proven reps under his belt not alot but fits the mold of Scotts type of player..

    • st4hof - Mar 10, 2015 at 3:40 PM

Johnson is just a little more unknown IMO, whereas Searcy has seen many more snaps… They both had very good front sevens in front of them, so maybe neither is as talented as they appear. I merely favor Searcy because of his age and reps. He seems to be of the “plug and play” type pick-up where with Johnson you just don’t kno… Anything is better than nothing though. I’m anxious to see how it plays out.

      • bluedog22 - Mar 10, 2015 at 3:43 PM

        Searcy heading to Titans

        • st4hof - Mar 10, 2015 at 4:01 PM

I realize that… Looks pretty likely Washington brings back the “head hunter” no matter who gets signed/drafted at safety.

Ngata traded to the Lions, and Nick Foles swapped for Sam Bradford.

    • st4hof - Mar 10, 2015 at 4:43 PM

Don’t forget Graham to Seattle. The Foles trade is a real head scratcher to me. Who is the starter? Butt Fumble as a “leg” up on No Knees by being in the system for a year IMO.

      • kenlinkins - Mar 10, 2015 at 4:52 PM

I am not sure what Coach Kelly is doing, but it will make one heck of a great case study in a few years.

      • redskinsinrichmondva - Mar 10, 2015 at 6:27 PM

“Butt fumble” had his most productive QB season (by ANY/A) playing in Kelly’s offense. Doesn’t mean he’ll replicate it in 2015, but he can’t be any less competent than Matt Barkley.

The Foles trade is interesting. It might seem lopsided for the Rams, but people need to remember that 1) Foles’s great 2013 season was as flukey as it gets (I talked about this in another blogpost), 2) Bradford didn’t have the same offensive system or talent in place in St. Louis, and 2) Foles has had his own injury issues in 2012 and 2014. If Foles and Bradford are basically the same QB in Kelly’s offense (and they could well be), then the Eagles did great with the trade because of the 2nd-round pick.

    • ET - Mar 10, 2015 at 4:50 PM

Ngata is great, haven’t seen the trade terms yet, but he’s a good guy in the trenches.

Foles for Bradford? Yikes. So the Eagles have Gimpy Bradford and The Buttfumbler as their QB options right now? Feels good not to be a Philly fan.

  29. kenlinkins - Mar 10, 2015 at 4:50 PM

Rich: Could the rash of trades of guys who were drafted under the old CBA be the effect I have been looking for (due to the lower cost of draft picks under the new CBA)? And if not, what was the cause of so many high profile trades all at once? It seems everyone traded was a high priced Vet drafted under the old CBA with very high cap numbers that teams wanted to dump. The only thing I can not figure is the other side of the coin, (why would 3 other teams pick up those contracts)? Could the effect just be forcing some of these guys onto the trading block?

    • ajbus1 - Mar 11, 2015 at 12:58 AM

The CBA isn’t a factor in these decisions. Teams and their GM’s just have different opinions on what a guy is worth. Some teams are looking to reload and aquire draft picks, others are desperate to fill certain holes in the roster. Every teams’ situation is different and there’s different philosophies on what route to take.
