Despite NFL QB shortage, Redskins will not bring back McCoy

Mar 5, 2015, 11:30 AM EDT

The NFL is facing a quarterback shortage. A number of teams need both starters and backups and the pool of available signal callers in the draft and in free agency is very thin.

Some are saying that this diminished QB pool is a good reason for the Redskins to trade Kirk Cousins. The laws of supply and demand would say that the team could get a high return for Cousins, who has showed signs of being a capable starter and solid backup options.

But according to multiple reports, the Redskins intend to keep him as the backup to Robert Griffin III with the possibility that he could take on a greater role should Griffin get injured or should his play not be up to par.

You don’t have to dig too deep to find the reasoning behind this decision. A reliable backup is needed for Griffin, who missed games due to injuries in 2012 and last year. If they were to part with Cousins they could have a difficult time securing a backup.

It does not appear that Colt McCoy is going to return to be an alternative to Griffin or Cousins. He started four games for the Redskins, one after Jay Gruden benched Cousins and three after Gruden decided that Griffin needed to sit.

But Gruden won’t have McCoy to turn to, at least not according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. He tweeted “Colt McCoy likely elsewhere” after saying it looks like Cousins is staying put.

McCoy is slated to be an unrestricted free agent. Although his arm strength is not ideal for an NFL quarterback he can get you by for a few games. But Scot McCloughan is not interested in bringing him into the mix. Perhaps he would rather have Griffin and Cousins go man to man. They are both going into the final years of their contracts and the team has to make decisions on both of them. McCoy could muddy the waters, taking snaps that are needed to determine if the team has a long-range solution at the most important position on the field.

McCoy is unlikely to be that long-term solution so the Redskins will move on, at least for now. Nothing is set in stone some six months prior to the start of the season.

Good, get his garbage @ss outta here. I never understood what the big deal about McCoy was, even in college. Either Robert succeeds, or back to the drawing board and look at the Conner Cooks or whoever else is coming out in 2016

    • garrskins - Mar 5, 2015 at 12:28 PM

He did better then Kirk and RG , might not be in the stats but the win , he’s way better then pretty boy floyd aka Kirk cousin

      • smithrob26smithrob26 - Mar 5, 2015 at 7:14 PM

Really? Cousins has had what 14 games played most off the bench! He has shown the ability to thread the needle but yes has also thrown picks but what QB in basically his 1st year (by games played) doesn’t?
Griffin has played in 23 more games and has only thrown for 5067 more yards.
Griffin has thrown 40 TD passes against 23 INT’s. 20 of those TD’s and only 5 INT’s were his first year when no team knew how to plan for him. Since then (2013 and 2014) he has 20 TD’s and 18 INT’s. with an average of 2449 yards a season over the last two. That is horrible. Say he is hurt, I agree and that is why he can’t be a long term NFL QB. He is always hurt and when he isn’t he is gun shy and wants to run first DESPITE him being the one who said he wants to be a drop back passer. Something he will never ever be!

Take my opinions out and here is what you have.
        Griffin 37 games played in, 63.9 comp %, 8097 yards, 7.62 avg per, 40 TDs, 23 INT’s, 14 fumbles. Last two years in 22 games he has 20 TD’s 18 INT’s and 11 fumbles = 29 turnovers= .76 turnovers a game!
        Cousins 14 games played in, 59 comp %, 3030 yards, 7.45 avg per,18 TD’s 19 INT’s, 6 fumbles = 25 turnovers = .56 turnovers a game.
Now who turns the ball over more? Most of the time Cousins came in when the team was behind and tried to win the game. Yes he had some really bad INT games but they can be corrected, not seeing 4 or 5 wide open receivers can be as well but not in 1,2 or 3 years.

I say whoever wins the QB competition in camp, provided it is a real competition, let them play the whole year out and see what we have. I am willing to bet Cousins will be the better QB!!!!!

        • timwillhidetimwillhide - Mar 6, 2015 at 2:09 AM

How many times have you seen a defender drop a ball Cousins has thrown? Allot. And its more like Cousins throws 2 ints a game

        • timwillhidetimwillhide - Mar 6, 2015 at 2:15 AM

Also Ive seen plenty of times Cousins not seeing wide open receivers because he is only able to read 1 side of the feild and locks in on 1 target. His ints are not accuracy issues which he does have its him not reading the defense properly. Whch film study should have solved by now.

    • garrskins - Mar 5, 2015 at 12:29 PM

He did better then Kirk and RG , might not be in the stats but the win ,he’s not affraid to play or to stay in the pocket he’s way better then pretty boy floyd aka Kirk cousin

      • Skinems91 - Mar 6, 2015 at 9:11 AM

Cousins hasn’t started and won a game yet. His wins come from games he’s came in after an injury occurred to the other qb, whether that be McCoy or Griffin. So your argument is irrelevant.

    • bowlregard - Mar 5, 2015 at 3:28 PM

McCoy is now a part of Redskins lore. In an otherwise pathetic season, Colt led the Redskins to a classic win in Dallas. Redskins fans everywhere should only ever mention his name with respect.

      • cmehustle - Mar 6, 2015 at 11:07 AM

Ill defintely give you that one!

    • sns626 - Mar 5, 2015 at 3:47 PM

He was the better of the garbage Qb’s

  2. goback2rfk - Mar 5, 2015 at 12:17 PM

It is because RG3 is the man in DC. He is not going anywhere they are going to secure Bob as the future. With McCoy out of the way, now there is really no one to challenge RG3. Cousins already proved he is the backup. Its a bright day if you are in the RG3 camp. well done

  3. bk70 - Mar 5, 2015 at 1:09 PM

Shouldn’t we expect a QB to be brought on board in 2015 and assigned to the Practice Squad. Maybe an undrafted free agent or a 7th round pick.

  4. rasta028 - Mar 5, 2015 at 1:13 PM

    McCoy is no loss

  5. sidepull - Mar 5, 2015 at 1:14 PM

Yea get McCoy outta here. Defense ( did I just say that?) won that Dallas game McCoy was a part of it but it wasn’t like he led to victory on his amazing play.

Everybody talks smack about Cousins vs. Bob. Hopefully the distinction between who actually is the franchise QB will be settled and all the smack talkers can get behind one QB. This repeat of last year is tiresome. Can one of these guys just stand up and take the job show us you are a franchise QB. If not we will get a team together and they can be a placeholder until a real QB comes along. It s nice to see they know McCoy aint it.

  6. abanig - Mar 5, 2015 at 2:44 PM

I think this sucks, I like McCoy, but I understand it. Neither Gruden nor McCloughan have a Qb on the roster that they drafted because of Shanahan’s mistake to draft two Qbs within his first 4 picks of the 2012 draft and immediately create a media/fan controversy.

So, at some point, I see the skins drafting a QB or signing a younger FA to be the third guy and hopefully they could develop that guy to be the back up in 2016 and beyond because it should happen that both Robert & Kirk won’t both be on the roster together next year, one of two will go somewhere else, depending on who plays better and if they both suck again like last year, they’ll both be gone.

    • skinsgame - Mar 6, 2015 at 5:03 AM

You are in for a very long ride if you didn’t like the Cousins pick just because they had drafted a QB earlier in the draft. Scot has repeatedly stated he drafts BPA, not for needs.

  7. stupidsigninprocess - Mar 5, 2015 at 2:51 PM

McCoy was too good for the Redskins and the Browns. A top notch work ethic & talent gone to waste in two of the most incompetent NFL “organizations.” I hope Colt lands somewhere that’s not habitually imploding. It was, however, fun to see Colt show how full of bullcr** all the haters are.

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 5, 2015 at 3:24 PM

Sorry, I wasn’t impressed. Yes he was the QB to beat Dallas. But he was just OK in beating the Titans, bad against the Colts and awful against the Rams. Maybe he’ll find an organization that can deal with a subpar arm and very limited leadership ability. I like the guy, I hope he can.

    • ET - Mar 6, 2015 at 2:36 PM

Colt is a great backup: smart, well-disciplined, well-prepared. He’s also very aware of his own physical limitations. Colt’s certainly a heckuva lot better than the 2nd or 3rd string mooks on a lot of teams, especially a team with a strong running game.

  8. kenlinkins - Mar 5, 2015 at 3:31 PM

Rich: Does this report make sense to you, so early in the process? Anything from the McCoy camp? I just do not buy the Redskins closing the door so early on a QB coach Gruden used even when Cousins was ready to play again just 3 months ago! Other than the new GM having a very low grade on McCoy’s play in 2014 (and if he did I have to wonder how he graded RG3 and Cousins) I just do not believe this report. Maybe McCoy will not be in DC in 2015 but why place that steak in the ground now? Just doesn’t make sense to me!

    • Rich Tandler - Mar 5, 2015 at 3:52 PM

It makes perfect sense to me for the reason I mentioned in the post. I don’t think McCloughan wants Gruden to have the crutch of McCoy. Jay needs to coach up one of the young QB’s for 2016 and beyond. Any snaps that don’t go to RG or Cousins are wasted. I think McC doesn’t want Jay to have the option to waste snaps.

      • bangkokben - Mar 5, 2015 at 5:19 PM

        Spot on as always.

      • Bryan - Mar 5, 2015 at 6:21 PM

Rich if you are taking that stand then send cousins packing and have gruden do the job he was hired to do. And that was and is to develop griffin. He wasn’t brought here to develop cousins u and I both know that. In my opinion. Now having said that I agree with you on having a backup that’s capable due to injuries so since we are keeping Kirk could u see gruden giving griff more reps that the norm this off season and let’s say a 70 30 split between griff Kirk and some other arm? I would like to see griff get extended work in otas training camp and preseason I know u will say injury risk well guy needs live bullet training and evidently practice isn’t quite live bullets. Enjoy ur blog everyday keep up great work rich

  9. bowlregard - Mar 5, 2015 at 3:31 PM

One mock draft had the Skins taking Connor Halliday in the 7th round.

  10. lorcanbonda - Mar 5, 2015 at 6:00 PM

He was the best quarterback that the Redskins had last year. So, of course he’s gone.

  11. deepball1 - Mar 5, 2015 at 7:43 PM

McCoy may not be completely gone…YET. He might stay close…workout….and if Griffin gets a splinter….McCoy will suddenly appear as a backup and in shape. That is a real possibility. Don’t be surprised if Gruden has already spoken to him about that. But the Skins are NOT carrying THREE quarterbacks on the roster.

    • hcicron - Mar 5, 2015 at 10:06 PM

While I agree if he isn’t signed by another club he could be a mid-season injury replacement, they will need at least 2 more qbs just for otas and training camp. Colt is a nice guy but he’s nothing special.

  12. troylok - Mar 5, 2015 at 8:12 PM

I think it is always bad when a team doesn’t show loyalty who got them through some tough places. McCoy could be a good fill-in. He’s not that old and he has some game management skills. It’s a tough business. I am sure they are looking for a really young guy to occupy that third spot, but it is tough. Good luck to McCoy. I hope he ends up starting somewhere.

  13. Jax4 - Mar 5, 2015 at 9:23 PM

Sure, don’t bring back the BEST QB on the roster last year…make sense

  14. donald - Mar 5, 2015 at 10:44 PM

Draft a quick in the late rounds 9th in freeagency

  15. Stephfan - Mar 6, 2015 at 4:21 AM

    Kirk will be gone

    • bangkokben - Mar 6, 2015 at 9:31 AM

      • Stephfan - Mar 6, 2015 at 9:54 AM

Look don’t comment on anything I have to say. It’s my opinion, he won’t be here after this season so of you don’t like what I have to say don’t comment..

  16. shermanp79 - Mar 6, 2015 at 9:21 AM

Not surprised. I have said it for months, you need to play the young guys and ride through it. It makes little sense to play McCoy who is minimally better( if he is) than Cousins. We have to figure out if either young guy can play. Giving them 2 games here or 3 there helps nobody. I think Cousins takes over once he gets on the field. If that is week one or week five. I just don’t see RG3 being honest with himself enough to get better. I can live with a few picks from Cousins, just not the 2 quarters of interceptions. If the improve the OL and the defense can stop a team now and then, it will be less pressure to score every possession. I would draft a QB, they will at least bring in an UDFA for Camp.

    • bangkokben - Mar 6, 2015 at 9:42 AM

“RG3 being honest with himself enough to get better.”

That’s close to where I am. Publicly, he certainly isn’t. Hopefully, for our sakes, he is privately. Regardless of what Kirk or Colt fans think, Griffin has the highest ceiling. It was sensible for the top to go one more year on the Griffin experiment. Especially when everyone views this as a rebuilding year. Now is the time to see if Griffin can grow as a pocket passer and whether Gruden can get him there. Worse case scenario: Griffin flames out and both he and coach are gone. Then all the off-season roster changes will be redone over the next two years for the new coach.

Get mariota’s because redskins qb starter is up in the air still. Without a great qb, u ain’t going anywhere anywhere! Get marcus mariota in draft if we can!!!

  18. Beetledust - Mar 7, 2015 at 6:14 PM

As long as we win I really don’t care who the quarterback is…I do however believe that griffin and cousins make a good tandem. .. Archives
