Is Joe Barry still in play for the Redskins?

Jan 19, 2015, 12:05 PM EDT

With the news that Vic Fangio left Redskins Park on Sunday without an offer to become Washington’s defensive coordinator, there are many questions about where the team’s search to fill the position stands after nearly three weeks.

Unfortunately, there aren’t very many answers.

Fangio has not taken a job elsewhere so he remains in play. According to ESPN 980 he is in the “thinking process”. Perhaps the Redskins and the former 49ers defensive coordinator decided to take some time to sleep on it and think about if the relationship would work. Maybe everything else seemed good but the money wasn’t right. Or perhaps Fangio and Jay Gruden, Bruce Allen, Scot McCloughan and other key players are Redskins Park just didn’t click personally and/or philosophically and decided that it wasn’t going to work.

Is what seemed to be Plan A for the job last week, Chargers linebackers coach Joe Barry, now Plan B if Fangio goes in another direction? Has the team turned away from the former Lions’ defensive coordinator after an explosion of negative fan reaction last week? Or did they just decide that they could do better?

Again, a lot of questions with no answers.

What we do know is that all of the candidates who we know have interviewed with the Redskins—Fangio, Barry, Wade Phillips, Clancy Pendergast, Raheem Morris, Ed Donatell, and Eric Mangini—are still available to be hired.

Today is a soft deadline for getting a coordinator in place. Senior Bowl activities start in Mobile tomorrow and that’s a good place for a defensive coordinator to look at college talent for the draft and pass along his feedback to McCloughan and to find some key assistants. They don’t have to make up their minds today but if they have all of the information they need it would be a good time to pick a candidate and make an offer.

Plz hire Fangio he’s the best man 4 the job n we as fans knows this he has great knowledge of what we run 3-4 dan $ Snyder get the job done come on jay pick this man n let start fresh

  2. bowlregard - Jan 19, 2015 at 1:39 PM

It’s hard to imagine that money is the problem. Last year Gruden gave Haslett control over the defense, so it’s unlikely a control issue, unless maybe it’s one over defensive assistants.

    • hk2000 - Jan 19, 2015 at 2:38 PM

Good point! Either Gruden is looking for a lesser personality than himself or those coaches have a problem with some of the assistants like his friend Morris but Allen and Gruden insist on keeping him.

      • Uncustered - Jan 19, 2015 at 2:59 PM

Gruden hasn’t earned the right to demand a dam thing. Mclouie was hired to fix the front office.

He needs to find a way to hire Fangio. Send barry back to Detroit.

Wade Phillips is 67. I doubt he can connect with the millennial generation.

If they get Fangio. I may start wearing my skins colors again….

        • skinsgame - Jan 19, 2015 at 10:44 PM

Who can can connct with millennials? Do you think the D coordinator needs to be able to go club wrecking with the boys? His age is only a detractor to people who devalue experience and proven success.

        • Ciao - Jan 20, 2015 at 12:44 PM

And fangio is 57 or so…if u r think wade can’t connect, then using your logic neither can fangio? Moot point I guess anyways, knuckle heads hired worse one of the bunch. I’m done with this team.

      • Al Goode - Jan 20, 2015 at 5:49 AM

It sounds like none of the big name candidates want Morris and I don’t blame them. After stomaching this season it is clear to me GRUDEN can’t handle someone with a “bigger” personality than his (player RG3 or Coach). Call it younger brother syndrome SMH

  3. mrhart76 - Jan 19, 2015 at 2:04 PM

    Hire wade Phillips already!

  4. skins4life7 - Jan 19, 2015 at 2:29 PM

Hopefully this is not another “BONEHEAD” move by the pre-Mccloughan front office. Can’t imagine them making a move without his go-ahead. But then again, this is the Washington Redskins where the buddy system trumps employing competent coaches AND players. We will see….this Barry guy is a NO-NO. By virtue of the fact that he is tied to the Tampa Crew is enough for me. No more of this: “hey buddy, want a job crap please…” Lets get guys in here that can teach and play the game.

  5. hk2000 - Jan 19, 2015 at 2:47 PM

Anyone who thinks Allen doesn’t play a huge part in this decision are fooling themselves! So regardless of the candidate’s NFL record, anyone with ties to Allen will be at the top of the list. Not only is Barry still in play, he likely is the one they pick.

    • Joe Greene - Jan 19, 2015 at 10:02 PM

McCloughan is in charge and Gruden is making this hire. I’ll believe that until they prove otherwise.

  6. hk2000 - Jan 19, 2015 at 2:55 PM

Rich, is it possible those candidates like Fangio and Phillips have a problem with some of the defensive assistants (for example Morris) and the Redskins just won’t budge? Or is Gruden threatened by those personalities and is looking for a weaker one, even though he himself may not be around this time next year? If either case is true, then we have much bigger problems than we knew.

  7. goback2rfk - Jan 19, 2015 at 3:36 PM

It Is Because NO ONE Wants To Coach For The Redskins. The Redskins Are Career Killers. You Come Here To Get Fired! Stay Away If You KNow Whats Best For You!!

    • skinsgame - Jan 19, 2015 at 10:46 PM

      Speaking of staying away…

      • goback2rfk - Jan 20, 2015 at 12:50 PM

Deny it all you want but the Redskins go through more coaches and staff than any other team since Snyder took over..

  8. Chris - Jan 19, 2015 at 3:38 PM

Isn’t it possible that maybe Barry impressed them more after both interviewed. I want Fangio just like most fans but I understand the realization that maybe Barry sold himself better. Also you can’t judge Barry by what he did in Detroit because Matt Millan was the GM and he was making personnel decisions.

    • gasngo14 - Jan 19, 2015 at 4:26 PM

      Nice post!
I would like to see us get Fangio, but you raise good points and IMO you can’t always judge a coach by one bad outcome from a team, if this where the case Belichick could have been labeled a bad coach after his tenure in Cleveland.

    • tideskin - Jan 19, 2015 at 5:35 PM

The Redskins (Dan Snyder, et al) said they were blown away by Jim Zorn’s interview when they hired him. How did that work out?

    • Joe Greene - Jan 19, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Barry hasn’t been a good LB coach in SD, who cares how he interviews?

  9. Jax4 - Jan 19, 2015 at 4:44 PM

At this point, they simply cannot hire Barry. The whole ordeal smells just like the Fassel “leak” several years ago. The fan backlash of hiring a guy who went 0-16 with Detroit would completely undermine everything else that has been done right so far this off-season (New GM and O-Line coach). If its not Fangio, they need to go ahead and hire Phillips. Heck his son is already on the staff. It makes too much sense.

  10. sidepull - Jan 19, 2015 at 5:33 PM

You know I don’t want to see Mangini, Barry or Pendergast as our DC. Gimme Fangio, Schwartz or Phillips. It mat be Fangio is waiting for the end of the SB so he can slide in Quinns spot and go back and spank SF. We may have no shot if that’s the case. I mean if I gotta go with a young guy who could use a shot gimme Pepper Johnson. I would take him over a number of the retreads.

    • httr915 - Jan 19, 2015 at 7:20 PM

      I agree

    • bowlregard - Jan 20, 2015 at 10:53 AM

Interesting point. Or he might be waiting on Quinn to take the reigns in Atlanta to join Quinn there. The waiting could be on Fangio’s side.

  11. kenlinkins - Jan 19, 2015 at 7:59 PM

Rich: Negotiation 101 says “After both parties have stated their position, the next person who speaks loses”! So, Allen wanted Berry but the GM said not with that fan reaction and 0-16 sitting out there, so they bring in Fangio but Allen said “you can’t replace any of my guys already here” and Fangio puts everything on hold (or maybe he senses the power play of the GM and President and is waiting to be sure he have control of the defense). Now that both GM McCloughan and President Allen have stated their position, the next man to speak loses. This could also account for the welcome lack of leaks coming from Redskins Park right now as it would be way to easy trace back to the person. IMO this hurts President Allen more as I feel that it removes a major weapon from his arsenal. IMO the Redskins new GM knows how to play the game better than the last few people who might have tried to stand up to President Allen. It will be interesting to see how this turns out and how President Allen reacts if he doesn’t get his way just by saying “that guy just blew up away in the interview”! Your Thoughts on the delay.

Rofl all you want, goback2rfk…but Lizard People are real.

    • Al Goode - Jan 20, 2015 at 5:34 AM

So true. Preach my brother. This makes me wonder if Scott was in place sooner would he of retained Gruden? SMH. With exception of Berry, all of the candidates have a better resume than Gruden as Head Coach! HTTR

      • kenlinkins - Jan 20, 2015 at 12:15 PM

Interesting statement and maybe that is the message the new GM is sending to the old GM. (that all the TB inbreeding is not the way to go and over the next few years the Redskins might be able to find the next head coach right in their own locker room).

    • bowlregard - Jan 20, 2015 at 10:57 AM

What surprises me is that they could hire Callahan so fast. It was a no-brainer and everyone in the room must have agreed. So why can’t they come to consensus over Fangio. This also seems like a no-brainer.

  12. Mike - Jan 19, 2015 at 9:54 PM

Why haven’t the redskins interviewed or even thought about interviewing Pepper Johnson? Why doesn’t Dan Snyder talk with Steelers management about how to hire a coach?

  13. skinsgame - Jan 20, 2015 at 3:35 AM

I really like how this is remaining a mystery and we aren’t reading daily leaks. The delay makes me think they are waiting to interview a candidate or 2 from one or both of the Super Bowl teams. And my guess is the new GM has talked to the staff in the building and put everyone on notice about “leaks” because, the non-news about the job is nothing short of amazing.

    • Al Goode - Jan 20, 2015 at 5:14 AM

Good point. I listen to all the talk & at the end of the day all fingers point back to GRUDEN! SMH. This is not a decisions for a first year coach who only won 4 games! You should never work with family & friends. I wonder if McCloughan was in place earlier would he of kept GRUDEN? I don’t blame any of the candidates for not wanting Morris or being hesitate about working under GRUDEN. Especially if it’s possible that next season could be his last. Hiring Bill Callahan will help Gruden & the offense a lot. Gruden looked overwhelmed last year. It’s time for GM McCloughan to put his foot down and put everyone in their proper place. Forget about egos or hurting someone’s feelings. Winning will fix all of that. Right now this team needs a LEADER!

    • bowlregard - Jan 20, 2015 at 10:58 AM

Perhaps they leaked the misinformation about Barry to get the media to stop guessing.

  14. bangkokben - Jan 20, 2015 at 10:18 AM

Holy mother! The conspiracy theories and projections. Cheese and crackers! Fangio doesn’t want to move his family 3000 miles to take a job with no talent with the 50/50 chance of it meaning he has to uproot in a year.

  15. rhinochaserdesign - Jan 20, 2015 at 3:47 PM

No decent coach wants to coach at a circus. Let’s see – go with John Fox or Jay Gruden? It’s a no brainer. But, hey, Barry can’t be THAT bad, can he? I mean, lets look at his DC record. Ok. 2 years with the Lions. Ok. Oh. in 2007 and 2008 when the Lions ranked DEAD LAST BOTH YEARS and went WINLESS one of those. Seriously, who the hell is the baffoon making this hire?
