Need to Know: Don’t look for immediate changes to Redskins personnel staff

Jan 10, 2015, 6:23 AM EDT

McCloughan intro

Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, January 10, 59 days before free agency starts for the Washington Redskins and the rest of the NFL.

Question of the day

We’re changing up the format of Need to Know for the offseason. Every day I’ll give an in-depth answer to a question submitted by a fan on my Twitter feed, via the Real Redskins Facebook page, or in the comments section here. On Twitter address the questions to me at @Rich_TandlerCSN with the #NTK hashtag. There will be a comment thread set up on the Facebook page and if you’re asking your question here, put “for NTK” at the start of the comment.

Today’s question is from Facebook:

I am not exactly sure what McCloughan did in previous stops but typically in the NFL a January change in the general manager spot is not usually accompanied by immediate changes in the personnel department.

The reason is that the scouting season does not run on the same calendar as the playing season. The area scouts spent the fall on the road watching games and visiting campuses to get the lowdown on prospects. They’re now breaking down film and writing up reports. The Senior Bowl and other all-star games, the NFL Combine, and pro days on deck in the coming few months before the actual draft.

To replace a scout or someone like Scott Campbell, who heads up the college scouting, right now would be extremely disruptive. Precious weeks would be wasted while getting the new guy up to speed on the prospects and traits that the organization is looking for.

On top of that, the executives like Campbell and the scouts have a lot of proprietary information about the team’s draft strategy in their heads. You do not want one of them latching on with another team in February knowing that much about what your team intends to do.

So unless there is an extreme case where an individual needs to be replaced immediately, the best course of action is to ride the scouting personnel you have through the draft and then make your changes after that. Black Monday for scouting staffs comes in May, after the draft.

As to your second question, we’ll see. I really didn’t get a sense of much of anything other than that I’m confident that big-dollar signings are a thing of the past. I can see him signing some players who can start in the short run while draft picks develop. I see the “young, inexpensive role players” you refer to coming from the draft and from undrafted free agents and out of all of the futures players they are signing now.

—It’s been 13 days since the Redskins played a game. It will be about 246 days until they play another one

Days until: NFL free agency starts 59; 2015 NFL Draft 110

Scot said he will take a look at scouts grades for free agency and draft and if he feel like he need to make some changes he will…hes clearly putting pressure on this scouting department and thats a great thing to do…this is his team now and he want this team to get better and better year by year but you can make steps in year one

He ran his scouting service all year. He probably knows as much about college players as Scott Campbell does. No problems here this year!

Exactly…if he decided to get rid of scot Campbell before the draft or free agency the plans wont change because his plans are to look at each college player thats coming out and he already said he started watching redskins game tape from this pass year he said hes at the first eagles and redskins game and has much more to go but game tape is the DNA and the draft is the lifeline…
