Need to Know: Can Redskins’ Morris keep up strong play vs. Giants?

Dec 14, 2014, 4:29 AM EDT

Here is what you need to know on this Sunday, December 14, six days before the Washington Redskins host the Philadelphia Eagles.

Three and out—Redskins vs. Giants final thoughts

1. The Giants’ front four on defense used to boast names like Osi and Strahan and the unit was the key to their two Super Bowl wins. Now, the only recognizable name on the unit is Jason Pierre-Paul, who leads the team with seven sacks. They can still generate some pass pressure (5th in the NFL in sacks per pass attempt) but they are vulnerable to the run (31st in yards/rush attempt).

2. In five games against the Giants, Alfred Morris has averaged 4.8 yards per carry and a very respectable 79 yards per game. Also, in what probably is more of a statistical oddity than a real trend, Morris has 10 career pass receptions against the Giants; that’s more than he has against any other team. If he’s not a factor today the Redskins have no chance.

3. I pointed this out in my prediction yesterday but it bears repeating. The major weakness in Eli Manning’s game is that he throws too many interceptions. One of many weaknesses in the Redskins’ defense is that they don’t get nearly as many picks as they should. If the Redskins can change that and grab two or three of Eli’s passes, perhaps this could be an entertaining game.

Out: Jay Gruden at least thought about benching Colt McCoy for this game and going with Robert Griffin III. And he may have gone with Griffin regardless of McCoy’s health. McCoy has been cleared to play and he’s starting. But what happens if the Redskins are trailing, say, 14-3 at halftime and McCoy has thrown a couple of interceptions? Does Gruden stick with his starter? Or does he bring RG3 out of the bullpen?

Today’s schedule: Redskins vs. Giants 1:00 p.m., FOX

Rich when did Jay ever say he ” thought about benching Colt McCoy for this game and go with Robert Griffin III ”

As for AM he has to be giving the ball to be successful, can’t give up on the run with the play of our QBs period!

    • Rich Tandler - Dec 15, 2014 at 2:07 PM

On Sunday and Monday. Indicated that he might go with RG even if Colt was healthy.

Unless o-line want to put effort in it b long day for morris…….if they get run game going he maybe crack 100+…….nd at least+3 t/o ratio to have chance but they get behind early it b another long day…..xpect eli to have big game. ….b interesting if breeland on beckham whole game

  3. greed - Dec 14, 2014 at 10:14 AM

Gruden season long pattern is to abandon the run no matter how effective A.Morris us running the running game is there is no commitment to it at all which is part of the reason all 3 WB has taking a beating this yr

  5. kenlinkins - Dec 14, 2014 at 1:37 PM

RG3 now has a chance to prove a lot of people wrong. Let’s see if he can throw a monkey wrench into someone’s plan!

    • goback2rfk - Dec 14, 2014 at 1:43 PM

Awesome game for RG3 today. Definitely won the starting job back for the rest of this year and starting next year! Vintage RG3 out there today, great performance.

  10. colmac69 - Dec 14, 2014 at 4:01 PM

Take 61 pass away in second half and offense bn non xistent….defense held as long as possible before they fell apart….way first half ended has turned game around…..instead up 17-7 and getting ball with momentum went in reverse…..redzone failures again…….collapse in second half…..r we really surprised? Williams should have finished his season two wks ago as he bn really struggling

  11. kenlinkins - Dec 14, 2014 at 4:20 PM

    This team needs a Enema!

  12. kenlinkins - Dec 14, 2014 at 4:34 PM

“Coach Gruden what your middle name”? “I am not sure, I will have to check the film to be sure, but it seems that we studied that all week long, so not be able to know that on Sunday is a bit troubling, as someone who is in charge of everything that happens I guess that falls on me and my staff, but I know for a fact that other teams are not having this problem this time of year, as someone who has been around this game for many years I can tell you that has never been a problem with any other team I have been apart of, so I guess that is something we will have to fix this week in practice and see who can handle that assignment so that I will not be up here answering that same question for 3 weeks in a row”! It seems no matter what is asked, we get the same answer!

  13. kenlinkins - Dec 14, 2014 at 4:45 PM

    B. Rambo (now playing for the Bills) had TWO INT’s today vs. Green Bays A Rogers. He now has double the number of INT’s then any Redskin. He was playing FS and not SS (and not playing in Haslett’s defense). Great job Mr. Rambo!

    • kenlinkins - Dec 14, 2014 at 4:49 PM

Maybe this will cause Dan Snyder to fire Haslett and Morris before the Redskins land at the airport this evening!

    • Bill - Dec 14, 2014 at 5:15 PM

Congrats to Baccari! He has talent, and another team is able to take advantage of them and help Bacarri develop instead of just throwing him under the bus.

As for Griffin, he played a great game today. The Giants defense came into this game as one of the more solid pass defenses in the league (both in opponent passer rating and opponent ANY/A), and Griffin played above-and-beyond what the typical QB has done this season vs. the Giants. And the objective data proves this.

      • Bill - Dec 15, 2014 at 1:36 PM

Made an error with the data. Griffin was more around average than great yesterday.

Even still, look around the rest of the league’s games. Several QBs won even while playing atrocious games because their teams are better around them.

  14. colmac69 - Dec 14, 2014 at 5:33 PM

Talking bout rambo getting two ints another guy we let go last yr who doesn’t get mentioned (and got criticised heavily) is will Montgomery who doing fine job with broncos…….maybe our team is just poison and makes every player play bad! !!!!…… for o-line its bn disaster since after dallas game……that must b bout 40 sacks in six games……can league not award 3-0 win to eagles and cowboys?
