Redskins’ Jackson still a topic of discussion around the Eagles

Jun 20, 2014, 1:25 PM EDT

Almost three months after the Eagles released him it appears that DeSean Jackson is still living rent free inside the collective heads of his old team.

The topic of the talent wide receiver, who signed with the Redskins within days after the Eagles let him go, came up recently when running back LeSean McCoy said that coach Chip Kelly was sending a message to the rest of the team when he cut Jackson.

“They’ll cut one of your best guys if (he’s) not buying in,” McCoy told the NFL Network.

Kelly has said repeatedly that the decision to release was a football decision. He believes that the team is better off without Jackson, nothing more and nothing less.

“I don’t send messages to other players by how I deal with other players,” Kelly said to the Eagles media on Thursday. “And how LeSean McCoy interprets things, . . . LeSean has a beautiful mind. Sometimes trying to analyze that mind I don’t wrap myself around that too much. Or bother myself too much with that. However LeSean interprets things is how LeSean interprets things.”

This all seems kind of silly. Jackson is gone and even though he had his best season with 82 receptions for 1,332 yards it’s not unreasonable to believe that Kelly decided that his $10.25 million base salary wasn’t worth it. Although it’s difficult to sort out what stories about Jackson’s off-field conduct are true and which ones aren’t, it’s safe to say that he was a high maintenance employee.

But as long as you have to figure out how to make your offense productive without Jackson and you have to eat the $6.25 million in dead cap anyway, why not send a message at the same time? Even if that wasn’t the intent of the move in the first place, if some players interpret it that way, why not let them think that?

In Washington we say that if you’re explaining, you’re losing. We won’t know for a while who won and lost in this matter but for the moment it looks like the Eagles are doing a whole lot of explaining.

I totally agree… seem like the eagles are nervous that this move will come back to haunt them for a very long time and I hear lasean mccoy salary gonna give eagles a salary cap issue next year and they might end up cutting him next if dont buy in to chip kelly or they might ask to take a pay cut which he said he wont so next year its gonna be interesting how eagles handle his salary

At this point and time it doesn’t matter what the eagles say everything is on the shoulder pads of Jackson the way he performs on the field and the way he carries himself off the field will determine what the eagles will answer about for the rest of the the year.

The Eagles are tops in the NFL when you talk in terms of salary caps but the redskins??? Not so much.
      Two words….ALBERT HAYNESWORTH…….. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You really have to go back to 2009? Big-time reach, my friend.

    James McMahon sounds nervous…go Skins!

Philly needs to be a little worried. It isn’t only Jackson. Garcon, Jackson, Rogers, Moss (maybe) and Reed catching passes from a healthy RGlll is formidable, maybe among the elite in the league as a group, and then there’s Morris! It’s not a 3-win team now.
And perhaps we’ll see an unleashed Haslett gin up a much better defense, particularly the rush, and take Foles
    out of his game.

WHO? the words “elite” and “unleashed” should never be uttered by a redskins fan.

How many Super Bowl wins can you count for your team? We have a proven history to utter as a Redskin Fan.

Who??? Isn’t that the guy who’s taller than a midget but could be considered one?
Oh okay the guy that used to get jammed at the line by half decent corners. The same guy that thought it was okay to brag about his record label during practices, showing his lack of focus to his teammates when he was placed with the third practice team because he didn’t think it was that important to learn all WR positions. Now I know the guy your talking about. So…has anyone ever said that he was missed? A fan ? Anyone on the Eagles? Nope, nada didn’t happen. It was along the lines of good riddance and don’t let the door hit your in the…..ummm well you know. He is fast and if properly covered ineffective for long stretches of games and non existant when it’s playoff time.
Good Luck Washington but if you are trying to sell “it’s like getting a 1st round pick”, then your just being delusional.

Soon, I think that when people Google the phrase “Whistling past the graveyard” this comment will be the top result.

Yeah, keep up the spin since how else can you excuse losing your best WR on the team who just came out with his best performance. You think he had a lack of focus at Philly? Wait until that focus rears its head at the Eagles this season.

    • nomaan78 - Jun 21, 2014 at 8:19 PM

ineffective in long stretches of games doesn’t get 1300 yards receiving and 9 touchdowns. We don’t need Desean to be a number 1 WR he is a solid number two who can stretch the field, and Garcon has shown he is very capable number 1. We have TE Jordan Reed, and WR Andre Roberts, and Santana Moss as well. Desean will be more effective this year and every year than most rookie number 1 WR picks anyway, he has speed and experience, and has shown he can perform. HTTR!!

Did you know that “your” and “you’re” are not interchangeable? Typical dimwitted Eagles fan.

Two things come to mind as I read this thread: 1- D-Jax is going to burn the Eagles this year- and beyond. That is for sure. He’ll be playing with a chip on his shoulder when the ugly Greens take the field. 2- I find it utterly hilarious that ANY Eagle fan can show up on this forum talking trash- and dogging the Redskins tradition. Hilarious. 5 Super Bowls. 3 Super Bowl Victories. A few of the greatest teams in NFL History. Top-25 type teams. A huge winning tradition. How many Super Bowl appearances do the Eggles have? How many victories? And how have they even done that much more than the Skins, over the past 20 years, while we’ve been bad? So you won a couple playoff games. Big deal. So did we. You won a few division championships. OK. You went a Super Bowl with McNabb. OK. You’ve had some good teams. But wow. Just wow. Get real. You are not the Patriots. LOL
