Draft chatter: 30 players invited to NFL draft in New York

Draft-welcome-to-prime-time

Here are the 30 players who have been invited to New York for the NFL Draft on May 8. Given the unpredictability of the draft, a few of them are likely to be left on the board when the Redskins’ first pick, 34th overall, rolls around on Friday night. Who do you think will still be waiting in the green room when the Redskins pick?

I see Fuller, Jernigian, Kouandjio, Latimer, Matthews (WR), Moses, Mosley, Roby, and Verrett still there at #34. Sounds like the green room could be 1/3 full after round one. Rich: how does the NFL came up with the list? Is there any input from the 32 teams?

      I say no.

Tried three more mock drafts at Fanspeak, going against three different databases. Here’s what I came up with:
    34
    CB BRADLEY ROBY
    OHIO STATE
    66
    OT ANTONIO RICHARDSON
    TENNESSEE
    102
    ILB YAWIN SMALLWOOD
    UCONN
    142
    RB DE’ANTHONY THOMAS
    OREGON
    178
    S KENNY LADLER
    VANDERBILT
    217
    DT SHAMAR STEPHEN

    34
    CB KYLE FULLER
    VIRGINIA TECH
    66
    S JIMMIE WARD
    NORTHERN ILLINOIS
    102
    OT JAWUAN JAMES
    TENNESSEE
    142
    ILB SHAYNE SKOV
    STANFORD
    178
    RB DRI ARCHER
    KENT STATE
    217
    CB WALT AIKENS
    LIBERTY
    UCONN

    34
    CB JASON VERRETT
    TCU
    66
    S DEONE BUCANNON
    WASHINGTON STATE
    102
    OT ANTONIO RICHARDSON
    TENNESSEE
    142
    DT DANIEL MCCULLERS
    TENNESSEE
    178
    RB DE’ANTHONY THOMAS
    OREGON
    217
    P TOM HORNSEY
    MEMPHIS

In all three, the CB’s available for the 34th pick were just too good to pass up. Either Richardson or James would likely give us an immediate upgrade at RT. Picking up some quality at S with either Ward, Bucannon, or the underrated Ladler would be helpful. I highly doubt Skov would be available in the 5th (or even the 4th), but Smallwood could certainly fall to the 4th … making him a huge value pick. Thomas in any round from the 5th on is a no-brainer, as is Archer. And any of the three 7th rounders here could conceivably play their way onto the 53-man roster. Hornsey is a heck of a punter with lots of upside. Aikens was just too much value to pass by in the last round despite the earlier Fuller pick. Stevens could develop quickly into a back-up for Cofield.
    Thoughts?

I am surprised Aaron Donald isn’t going to be there he should be easily going in the 1st round. If not I would take him at 34 in a heartbeat.

I also don’t think Jimmy Garropolo will get drafted before the 3rd round so I’m not sure why he’d be invited there. If he is there at 34 and perhaps another team is in love with him this could be a good opportunity for the Redskins trading down a few picks and picking up an extra 3rd or 4th rounder. Only time to do that is if they have 5 or 6 guys on their board they’d be satisfied with and that would still be there.
