Need to Know: Five players the Redskins could have had in the 2008 draft

Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, January 25, 72 days before the Redskins start offseason workouts.

Nickel coverage

With the report that Fred Davis is facing a six-game suspension at the start of the 2014 season, the Redskins’ draft class of 2008 is total loss. That’s in large part due to the second round, where the Redskins chose three players from whom they got minimal returns—Davis (48th overall pic) and wide receivers Devin Thomas (34th) and Malcolm Kelly (51st). Here are five players they could have had instead:

CB Brandon Flowers (drafted by Chiefs, pick 35 overall)—Flowers made his first Pro Bowl this year, an honor for which he was long overdue. He has started 87 games and has 17 interceptions.

WR Jordy Nelson (Packers, 36th)—He had more receptions as a rookie, 33, than Kelly had in his NFL career (28). Nelson has been a valuable target for Aaron Rodgers and is coming off of a career-high 85-catch season.

WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles, 49th)—You might note that this is one pick after the Redskins took Davis. Jackson would be of value to the Redskins as a punt returner alone, with his 9.9-yard average and four career touchdowns. That’s not to mention his three 1,000-yard seasons as a receiver, leading to three Pro Bowl appearances.

RB Ray Rice (Ravens, 55th)—Yes, the Redskins had Clinton Portis at the time, but it was clear that with his playing style he wouldn’t last forever. He is still a productive back while Portis has been retired since after the 2010 season.

RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs, 73rd)—He’s been first-team All-Pro twice and, like Rice, he’s a threat as both a runner and receiver. Had Peyton Manning not had the season that he had Charles would have been a legitimate candidate for MVP in 2013. There are reports that the Redskins were strongly considering drafting him but someone decided to go with Kelly.

Its always easy on hindsight to go back and second guess draft choices…obviously time has proved that kelly and thomas offered little (altho kelly got bad inj early on)…davis looked like a steal and has lot of talent(after 09 season looked ready to break out) but one thing or another it looks like he going the wrong way…draft can b a crap shoot at times but some teams (for whatever reasons) always seem to draft well while others go the opposite way….

That’s mostly true. But when you ignore red flags like the ones out on Kelly’s knees and, to a lesser extent, Davis’ partying and work habits, you turn the odds in the “crap shoot” decidedly against you.

Very true rich..that was knock on kelly bout his knees..what your thoughts on what position the skins use their first draft choice they go defense or poss receiver or o-line or will free agency pick ups before draft determine which way they go?

        • Rich Tandler - Jan 25, 2014 at 10:04 AM

Will know better after free agency.

Well, hindsight is always 50/50. I remember watching that draft and thinking we needed receivers badly. My thought was they were hoping to land Bowe, when he was taken by the Chiefs they (Vinnie) reached for Kelly and Thomas. Davis can play, but his immaturity is his downfall.

How big was the lose for Hankerson this year?

    • James - Jan 25, 2014 at 2:23 PM

They could have landed any WR in that draft, Devin Thomas was the first WR taken that year. This is the draft that royally screwed us and that’s saying a lot considering the terrible draft years or franchise has had over the years.

I’m never this guy, but hindsight is 20/20.

Nice report , sad but true…

That whole fiasco was on the front office structure at the time not mentioning names .
it would now seem like Flowers Jackson and Charles of any combination of those five would had been better than what we ended up picking .
Not praising coach Shannahan or raking him over the coals but his drafts were much better than that .
its going to be interesting how the drafts are going shake out under Allen.

This confirms how bad Snyder and Cerrato were in how there personnel selection process was set up. The most distrubing part is that the Snyder/Allen/Shanny combo had 33 picks in their 4 yrs together…how many of that 33 have proven to be consistent impact players? We had 12 picks in 2011 alone and that is shaping up to be an overall bust. Archives
