Need to Know: Five free agents the Redskins are unlikely to sign

Jan 22, 2014, 4:55 AM EDT

Here is what you need to know on this Wednesday, January 22, 48 days before NFL free agency starts.

Nickel coverage

Here are five free agents the Redskins are very unlikely to sign:

1. TE Jimmy Graham, NO—A two-tight end setup with Graham and Jordan Reed would cause many sleepless nights for opposing defensive coordinators. It’s not going to happen. Saints GM Mickey Loomis recently said that the team will give him the franchise tag if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal before the tag deadline.

2. WR Eric Decker, DEN—The Redskins certainly could use a receiver who caught 87 passes for 1,288 yards to line up across from Pierre Garçon. Financial considerations are likely to prevent that from happening. As was explained here last week it would be very hard for the organization to add another high wide receiver cap number to Garçon’s.

3. S Jairus Byrd, BUF—The Redskins have needed safety help forever and Byrd has the tools to give them a defensive boost. But after being franchised last year Byrd will be looking to get paid some serious money. That’s likely to knock him out of the Redskins’ price range. Actually, chances are the Bills will end up slapping with the franchise tag again or they may sign him to a long-term deal. He’s worth more to them than he is to any other team.

4. OT Branden Albert, KC—Yes, the Redskins need an upgrade at right tackle. However, Albert is a left tackle and that’s a higher-paid spot than the right side. Albert will be looking for the big dollars and it would be foolish of the Redskins to pay both him and Trent Williams LT money.

5. CB Aqib Talib, NE—Of the players listed here Talib is the one I could be wrong about. He has history with Raheem Morris and Bruce Allen. They made a very strong bid to sign him a year ago. Now, however, it’s much more difficult to see Talib leaving the Patriots. He recently said, “I’ve really been in the NFL since November of 2012,” referring to the date he was traded from Tampa Bay to New England. And seeing how bad the Pats’ secondary looked after Talib exited the AFC title game with an injury, it’s hard to see Bill Belichick letting him go.

Rich, you really think the chances are the bills franchise him again in 2014 at $8.3 million after he held out last year because of tag? All the reports I’ve read indicate other teams are willing to offer more than bills. Also, if the Bills DC leaves for Browns job, the safety position might not be as important to justify what Byrd wants. Just think he is the most likely on the Skins’ radar due to FS being a huge need. I agree about the Patriots not letting Talib walk, i.e. they will franchise him if they don’t re-sign.

I think there is a very good chance they franchise him; they don’t want to take the hit to their credibility if he leaves. If other teams are willing to offer him more that makes it a no-brainer to franchise him. Hard to imagine any defensive scheme where a good free safety is not very important.

Have you heard anything on Orakpo getting tagged if no deal gets worked out? When is deadline?

        • Rich Tandler - Jan 22, 2014 at 6:22 AM

Writing a post on that right now, will be up later today either here or on

Campbell stays up late at night trying to figure out what the next article to write about, regardless if it makes sense. That’s how he earns money so he HAS to do this…. But everything here is just an opinion. My opinion is that Jairus Byrd is MOST likely to come here simply because the Skins struggle with this position every single year and there is no answer in sight. Very few free agents get franchised 2 years in a row without a contract. If he is a free agent money will be no object, Haslett’s job is on the line. THAT is a fact.

I actually agree with everything else.

      • Rich Tandler - Jan 22, 2014 at 12:46 PM

Who’s Campbell? I don’t mind being busted on but at least get the name right.

The fact that they have struggled at the position for years is another reason why they WON’T go after Byrd. He’s going to turn 28 before the quarter mark of next season passes. Tell my why it makes sense to tie up a ton of money in a guy who is going to solve your longstanding problem for only two, maybe three years. Go into the draft this year or next and take a guy who can solve your problem for five years or longer.

Rich I agree with majority of your post and really like you as a writer as well. With that being said on the flip side if you haven’t already give us a “5 Free Agents The Redskins Are Likely To Sign”. We have a lot of money to spend and I feel it’s a must. ….A Must we sign one of these big named big game DBs(Bryd, T.J. Ward, Vontae Davis, A. Vernon, or Sam Shields). Who do you see most likely being in a Skins uniform next year?

        • Rich Tandler - Jan 22, 2014 at 1:19 PM

You will be getting so many lists of free agents between now and March 11 you won’t be able to stand it. Stay tuned. It’s easy to eliminate those who are unlikely to be signed, more digging to sort out who’s a good fit.

Jarius Byrd and Aqib Talib will wind up being Redskins in 2014

    • Rich Tandler - Jan 22, 2014 at 12:46 PM

OK. But you wanting it to happen won’t make it so.

  3. aprilwalker2013 - Jan 22, 2014 at 10:49 AM

Not happy with Decker being on this list!! He can also return kicks! Any way that makes a differance? 2 for price of 1? High price yes..but worth it? I think so! HTTR

There are quite a few safeties available in FA Which ones do you think make the most sense? Ryan Clark? Quintin Mikell? Quintin Demps? Or someone else?

    • Rich Tandler - Jan 22, 2014 at 2:04 PM

Post on safeties coming tomorrow morning.

  5. daggolden - Jan 23, 2014 at 5:29 AM

There are a lot of teams with a lot of money which need safety help. A playoff team like the Eagles need a safety and both Ward and Bryd are from Oregon. I think Chip and the Eagles are more appealing than the Redskins.

  6. kenlinkins - Jan 23, 2014 at 10:57 AM

I can see the Redskins tagging Orakpo, but if they do I do not see them signing any other high priced Free Agents for 2014. IMO you do not sign the High Dollar free Agent unless you feel you are a player away from 11 wins, which we are not. With a new Head Coach, gambling on a long term high dollar guy within the first 4 months of taking over a team is not a smart thing to do. I would save some Cap Scape for 2015 and see where I made mistakes in 2014 on mid level Free Agents, 2014 Draft picks and guys I kept around from the 2013 team. Orkapo is a safer bet as a tag as you have all the inside information and it only cost you a one year commitment. If you allow Orakpo to walk you can sign 3 mid level guys at $3.5 million for 2014 who were lower draft picks and might be ready to break out due to being mis managed or hurt. I think we are looking for up-grades at many spots and not the “show stopped” types in 2014.

    • Derrick Williams - Jan 23, 2014 at 11:51 AM

Hmmmmmm, I understand your method of thinking here but I may have to disagree slightly. Being projected in the top 6 in cap space I think we can sign at least one show stopper and still fill holes with mid level guys. I’m gonna use your phrase “Show Stopper” a lot here so don’t get mad. Do you see how many show stoppers are in the upcoming Super Bowl? I won’t even begin to name because you know who they are. Now take a look at the Skins….. lets say we had what would be 2 “Show Stoppers” of this upcoming free agency in the defensive backfield in Byrd and Talib. Do you know how many games better they would have made us this year? I’m not saying they would have made us Super Bowl bound but they do change the outcome in a significant amount of games. So like I said I get your concept but a “Show Stopper” or 2 are needed in this league today. Ask Seattle Richard Sherman.

      • Rich Tandler - Jan 23, 2014 at 12:06 PM

I could buy in to you “show stopper” theory if the Redskins had a realistic shot at going to the Super Bowl this year. They don’t. And you’ll note that Byrd and Sherman were drafted by their current teams. Those are the “show stoppers” you want.

        • Derrick Williams - Jan 23, 2014 at 12:36 PM

That’s true but the Redskins are a year and and RGIII injury removed from being on the way to beating the Seahawks in the playoffs with the almost exact same team so with the parody in this league and in the NFL East one could be a show stopper and as you noted, a Draft away from being where you need to be. And I say that in being a fan of football. Not just a fan of the Redskins. Archives
