It’s been way too long since I’ve taken your Twitter questions, here we go. If I didn’t get to your question here I’ll answer it on Twitter. If you missed the call, feel free to hit me up on Twitter any time.
@Rich_TandlerCSN is shanny and rg3 relationship so bad that a new coach needs to be hired eventually to keep rg3 here past rookie contract?
— Kyle spitzer (@SpitzerKyle) September 23, 2013
In a word, no. At least not as far as I’ve heard from anyone that I trust at Redskins Park or from a journalist I respect. Everything I read about some sort of rift/fracture is either sheer speculation–see what Fred Smoot had to say yesterday–or old, third- or fourth-hand knowledge that should be taken with many grains of salt. Things may have been tense after the injury and in training camp but now, Griffin’s playing, Shanahan’s coaching and there’s nothing wrong that a win or two won’t cure. My advice here is don’t believe everything you read/hear. As always, you should consider the source and think about where this talking head or writer is getting his information. Buy into uninformed speculation at your own risk.
@Rich_TandlerCSN Tweet for the Tweetbag tomorrow. Was has Rambo done to not play much vs Det and LeRibeus done to keep being deactivated?
— Joe Aman (@JoeAman87) September 23, 2013
Rambo just hasn’t gotten it done on the field. I read someone from one media observer that said that he didn’t like Rambo’s “compete level”, a code for saying that he didn’t think the player was putting out the effort. I’m not sure I buy into that completely but it can’t be dismissed. As far as LeRibeus, only on interior lineman is active on game day. The coaches believe that Adam Gettis is the best option to fill in right now if someone goes down. It’s not any more complicated than that.

There is a long way to go before declaring Reed to be the future at tight end. One of my concerns about Reed, the injury bug, popped up on Sunday. Remember he missed all of OTAs and minicamp with a quad injury and missed a good number of practices in training camp. I think he shows great potential when he can stay of the field but we’ll see.
@Rich_TandlerCSN besides tackling what is the main problem w/ the D, pass rush or coverage?
— Suhail (@sabuv11) September 23, 2013
I’ll include the angles they’re taking to the ball carriers in with tackling because that is part of the tackling issue. Behind that, I’ll say it’s the coverage. Same issue, really. If you’re not in the right place in coverage not only will the pass be completed but you’re going to have a hard time making the tackle. More missed tackles, more YAC by the receivers, and it snowballs from there. So you can’t really isolate any of the issues from tackling; it all really comes down to getting the guy with the ball down to the ground.
Absolutely not. The brace will remain on all year as a preventive measure. And how is Griffin going to get technically sound on the bench? I think we’ve been able to establish that as much as Mike Shanahan likes to say that their practices are conducted a game-like tempo and intensity it’s simply not true. You can’t replicate game conditions on the practice field and the only way Griffin can get ready to play is to play in games. Griffin is not going to the bench, period. It’s not even something being debated by Shanahan and the others at Redskins Park who make such decisions.
@Rich_TandlerCSN What are your thoughts on Garcon coming out and saying that Robert Griffin is not fully healthy?
— Balser (@RasslinFan77) September 23, 2013
It’s somewhat puzzling. It wasn’t surprising that he came out and said something on the radio last week because stuff like that can just come out of Pierre’s mouth from time to time (remember him letting the cat out of the bag regarding Kirk Cousins starting vs. the Browns last year). But I’m not sure why Shanahan didn’t get it buttoned up immediately. Garçon had the same lines yesterday. It’s possible that Shanahan is letting him talk in order to create confusion in the mind of the opposition, throwing some doubt into the minds of the upcoming defenses.
@Rich_TandlerCSN Rich, if D doesn’t show marked improvement by years end, would a Rah as DC, move to Tampa 2 def be a possibility? Bad idea?
— Randy Strickland Jr. (@StricknineSkinz) September 24, 2013
I’m not sure why they would want to conduct another transition just a few years after a painful one. If it would magically solve the problems with the defense it might be worth the pain. But the issues have nothing to do with the scheme; it’s a matter of missed tackles (and, as noted above, poor angles that lead to those misses) and shaky personnel in the secondary. They aren’t the worst defense in NFL history (don’t tell me about yards, 44 other teams have allowed more points through the first three games including the 2012 Redskins) and they will give the team a chance to win most weeks.
