The Redskins have placed safety Chris Horton on injured reserve with a toe injury. The move is not a surprise given that Jim Zorn announced that he would miss as many as six weeks with the injury. With eight games left in the season it didn’t make sense to wait and see how the injury was responding.
To take Horton’s roster spot the Redskins re-signed running back Quinton Ganther. There is concern over depth at running back with Clinton Portis likely to miss Sunday’s game against Denver with a concussion.
This may not be the only move of the week. The loss of Horton leaves the Redskins with only three safeties and Jim Zorn indicated earlier this week that the team may look to add one.
The Redskins’ press release follows after the jump.
LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they placed safety Chris Horton on Injured Reserve and re-signed running back Quinton Ganther. The move ends Horton’s season.
Ganther, originally signed with the team on Oct. 20, but was inactive for the team’s Week 7 contest against Philadelphia, prior to the Redskins bye week. He was released this past Saturday.
Ganther, whose first name is pronounced qwin-TAHN, has played in 13 games over the last three seasons for the Tennessee Titans. He spent the majority of 2006 and 2007 on the Titans’ practice squad before sticking to the 53-man roster for all of 2008. Last season, Ganther had nine carries for 61 yards (6.8 avg.) and caught six passes for 43 yards.
Horton, who injured a toe last Sunday at Atlanta, played in all eight Redskins contests, with five starts. He registered 36 tackles, including two for loss, three passes defensed and a fumble recovery

This move is another example of why the front office just does not get it. Hmmm…Let’s see we have a running back that is hurt because he gets nailed at the line of scrimage 99% of the time he carries the ball. I know lets waste even more money on a lesser back and put him in the same situation.
Bottom line: we already have capable ball carriers on our roster. Why do we not utilize them and sign some 300 pound guy/s to try and get something going. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain!!
replace a safety with a running back = only Vinny
