Vote of no confidence in Zorn

Football is no different from any other business.

When the start to bring in the consultants it’s time to refresh the ole resume.

The hiring of Sherm Lewis as an offensive consultant is not a good sign for Jim Zorn’s job security.

This is not just a guess, it’s a statement based on the Redskins under one Daniel Snyder.

In 1999, Bill Arnsparger was brought in to help the defense. Mike Nolan, who was the defensive coordinator, was gone at the end of the season. Head coach Norv Turner managed to get the Redskins into the playoffs that year but he didn’t last until the end of the next season.

After Steve Spurrier’s Redskins fell to 3-4 after a 3-1 start the consultant bus again pulled up to Redskins Park. This time it was Foge Fazio to work with the defense and Joe Bugel to help offensive guru Spurrier. The equipment hadn’t yet been put away before Spurrier resigned at the end of the season.

Rick Snider at the Examiner saw this coming, but even he didn’t see it happening this fast. From his Sept. 21 column:

Do I hear “consultant” once more from the owner’s box? Maybe, especially if this scoring funk doesn’t end by the Nov. 1 bye. And if the second coming of Bill Arnsparger reaches Redskins Park, we know this coaching regime is done just like previous administrations departed after getting midseason mentoring.

The clock is ticking on Zorn. He may be able to survive but those betting odds that he will be the first coach to be fired this year just got a lot shorter.

I don’t know what’s more humiliating, watching this sorry offense struggle to score more than 10 points every week or finding out that the owner is hiring coaching “consultants” again. Does the nonsense ever stop?

Where were the consultants when Vinny couldn’t manage to find one offensive lineman in the 2009 draft? Heck, maybe they should have hired a consultant when they were searching for a coach to succeed Gibbs.

If they’re going to get rid of Zorn and Campbell, they might as well flush Vinny as well. That turd is as guilty as anyone.

With some of the truly awful teams out there, it seems hard to imagine that Zorn would be the first to be fired, but i agree that it doesn’t look good.
by the way, did anyone here the radio interview with Cerrato regarding the hiring? It sounded like he was at an arcade when he was doing the interview.
is there a chance that we play really well this weekend and all of this stuff will go away? maybe i’m asking too much.

  3. The only reason Zorn had a 6-2 record was because Gibbs left the keys to Zorn and said here drive! After the O-line fell apart, so did Zorn and he never recovered! I believe Zorn lost the confidence of his players! I believe some players don’t believe he makes a good head coach! You have to inspire players to achieve more! Just like a weight trainer would push you to do just two more reps when you feel like quiting, no different from a head coach in the NFL. Players (especially players with the Redskins) get big contracts then get complacent and don’t try as hard! Look at Portis and what he said, he usually sits on the sidelines after plays, but in the Bucs game he was up in peoples faces trying to motivate them! Why can’t we get that kind of effort all the time from our players? It’s the head coach! In short I’ll be the 1st to welcome our new head coach in waiting! Mike Holmgren! It’s good to have you as a Redskins =)

  4. Renny Babiarz says:

Remember, Ernie Zampese was brought in as a consultant for Joe Gibbs in 2004. That didn’t seem to help the offense, but it didn’t lead to Gibbs being fired after a 6-10 season either.

Of course, this is Gibbs we are talking about. But still, the point is sometimes consultants are brought in and the sky does not fall. Just sayin.

  5. Renny man really? I get what your saying but come on really? I’m a HUGE fan have been for a loooooong time! And I know Zorn isn’t cutting it as a head coach! Now make a great position coach for the QB’s but Renny man this guy bit off more than he could digest let a lone chew! For god sakes he called us the burgundy and black! He didn’t even know our colors but he knows head coaching right? How can the man game plan for a team his team is playing? He stress details but doesn’t know the details of his on team? Bye Zorn it was nice knowing you!
