Justin Tryon has taken Smoot's job
According to the Washington Times’ Ryan O’Halloran’s review of the Washington Redskins game against the Bucs, Fred Smoot participated in just one play the 16-13 win over Tampa Bay.
One play.
And that, O’Halloran said, came at safety near the end of the first half.
Ouch.
Justin Tryon has taken his place at nickel back and he played well. He has something that Smoot never had much of and has even less of now—speed.
Tryon quieted some critics who thought that he should have been cut based on his coverage problems in the past two seasons. While he may not be ready for prime time he hasn’t embarrassed himself when he has taken snaps in defense either this year or last.

It was very interesting to hear Reed Doughty say after the Tampa Bay game that Fred Smoot is still very much in the Redskins’ plans. The fact he was asked a question about Smoot and that he responded so tactfully makes you wonder. Personally, I wonder if Carlos Rogers is of starting corner quality. The man dropped an interception thrown straight to him, and slant passes seem to be the weapon of choice against him.
when Barnes is ready, Smoot might go
probably next season
Honestly, I wouldn’t be suprised if smoot is gone. He’s a great locker room prescence, but he’s so old. With the wish to get younger, and 3 fantastic safties as well as 2 good corner’s with several young options.
