| Town Hall Meeting–Lunchtime edition |
(10/15/2009) |
| 11:57 |
Hi folks and welcome! |
| 11:58 |
A relatively calm week but still a few interesting things going on. |
| 11:59 |
The loss of Samuels for at least this game and maybe longer has caused a stirring of the offensive line with three spots changing hands this week. |
| 11:59 |
DeAngelo Hall is talking about panic. |
| 12:00 |
Carlos Rogers is pointing the finger at the man who signs his paycheck. |
| 12:00 |
And the man who signs the paychecks is not talking. |
| 12:00 |
And oh, yeah, there’s a game to be played on Sunday. |
| 12:01 |
Some fans are planning a “black out”, encouraging fans to wear black to the game to show their disgust with the state of the franchise. http://bit.ly/112NQ3 |
| 12:02 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Hi Rich, I was busy looking for something in black to wear Sunday |
| 12:03 |
Sad that it’s come to that. |
| 12:04 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
I asked Zack Bolno if Snyder or the Skins had any comment on Limbaugh… got the old no comment. |
| 12:04 |
Snyder is a GOP donor, you said? |
| 12:05 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Yep he’s given to McCain, Steele, George Allen and was a pioneer for Bush I beleive. |
| 12:05 |
Did you read that George Soros also is a member of the Checketts group? |
| 12:06 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Are you serious? |
| 12:06 |
Checketts isn’t too savvy about trying to avoid controversy. |
| 12:07 |
What do you think about what’s going to happen on Sunday? |
| 12:09 |
The Panthers aren’t a horrible team. |
| 12:09 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Honestly I don’t know. The Skins should beat the Chiefs, but you just never know with this group. I understand the weather is going to be bad so it could get uglyu |
| 12:10 |
They aren’t going to win their division or anything but they have some good players. |
| 12:10 |
Chilly and rainy. Great day to be in the press box. |
| 12:11 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
The Panthers aren’t horrible but they aren’t good either, and the Skins have knack for making mediocre teams look all world. If the Skins do win its going to be like the Rams or Bucs win close and ugly. |
| 12:11 |
Don’t think they can break that sub-20-point streak going back to, I think, last September? |
| 12:12 |
[Comment From Omar]
waddup |
| 12:12 |
[Comment From Scot]
Curious to see how their terrible pass rushing D does against our patchwork O-Line. Skins are toast for sure if we can’t block the Chefs |
| 12:12 |
Omar, Scot, welcome! |
| 12:13 |
[Comment From Scot]
Hi |
| 12:13 |
It’s the old stoppable force against the moveable object! |
| 12:13 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
I agree. I do hope they take your advice and get Mason and Alridge involved |
| 12:14 |
That’s what’s bothering me about Zorn. It doesn’t seem like he wants to try to change things to keep his job. |
| 12:14 |
Like he’d rather go down his way than change and survive. |
| 12:14 |
[Comment From Scot]
I’d like to see them too, |
| 12:14 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
If the 20 or 30 point barrier is broken the defense will have to score at least half those amounts |
| 12:15 |
They sure set up the O last week. If they had been able to muster a TD offensively they would have been there. |
| 12:15 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
True, and I thought Zorn was the kind of guy who looked like he could change course when needed. Or at least he appeared to have the intelligence to recognize it. |
| 12:16 |
Do you think there’s any chance that Zorn can turn it around and survive? |
| 12:17 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Well at least Jared Allen is not playing for Chiefs anymore. |
| 12:17 |
IMO there’s a slim chance but only on the slimmer chance that he’ll change things up. |
| 12:18 |
Can anyone name more than two Chiefs? |
| 12:18 |
[Comment From Scot]
barring a deep playoff run, I wouldn’t think so. He doesn’t seem to adapt his philosophies to the talent on the team |
| 12:18 |
I can name one who made his name there, Larry Johnson. |
| 12:18 |
[Comment From Scot]
Cassel, Johnson,…hmmm that’s hard |
| 12:19 |
And, right, Matt Cassell who made his name elsewhere. |
| 12:19 |
[Comment From Scot]
Jamal Charles! |
| 12:19 |
Did you cheat, Scot? |
| 12:19 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
No, I don’t think Zorn can turn it around–simply by the fact of the cards he drew in coming here. I initally thought he could do some good here, but in retrospect he never had a chance. |
| 12:19 |
The OL is the killer. Nothing works if that doesn’t work. |
| 12:19 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Dwayne Bowe. |
| 12:20 |
[Comment From Scot]
No… I play fantasy and seer his name sometimes |
| 12:20 |
[Comment From Scot]
I think Bobby Wade has been doing well down there |
| 12:21 |
Well, it would be good to see the kind of win that even a mediocre team should be able to put up against them. |
| 12:22 |
They did give Dallas all they could handle last week. |
| 12:22 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
I wouldn’t be suprised to see a lot of Charles instead of Johnson. He’s getting picked up in fantasy leagues because of Johnson’s ineffectiveness. |
| 12:22 |
Yeah, they made a bad investment in Johnson. |
| 12:22 |
Signed him right after his career year and they’re stuck with it. |
| 12:22 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
that would be similar issues on the O-line. The difference is that they have GM who understands it. |
| 12:23 |
They can get away with a 2-14 year, the Redskins can’t. |
| 12:23 |
Nor should they given the resources that Snyder has. |
| 12:24 |
Still baffling how they could get Mike Williams and say that the OL was fine. |
| 12:24 |
It’s not like they ran out of money after signing Haynesworth and D. Hall, either. I think they still have a few million in cap room. |
| 12:24 |
[Comment From Scot]
Do you guys think Samuels is done for the year? Situation sounds pretty serious, from what I’ve read. |
| 12:25 |
I’d have to say it’s a possibility. |
| 12:25 |
If he goes on IR, the bright side would be that they could sign another running back. |
| 12:25 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
2-14 would be a bitter pill, but if there were mgmt changes and people who knew what to do with a high draft pick I might swallow it. |
| 12:26 |
[Comment From Scot]
He has been a rock for years. Wish I had bought a jersey before I joined the legions of boycotters |
| 12:26 |
[Comment From Scot]
Or clear room for Roscoe Parrish…doh |
| 12:27 |
That’s been pretty well shot down. |
| 12:27 |
Rumors like that usually start with agents. |
| 12:28 |
I don’t think that it’s necessary to “blow it up”. They just need to get an offensive line and then all will be fairly well. |
| 12:29 |
The other needs will be much less pressing if they get the OL fixed. |
| 12:29 |
And, with an uncapped year coming, it could be done,. |
| 12:29 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Given the o-line problems I would be definitley looking for 3rd QB. I’m worried that Campbell and Collins could get knocked out as the season goes on. |
| 12:29 |
Chase Daniel is a free agent. |
| 12:30 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Rich, Do you draft or buy or O-line? |
| 12:30 |
I draft one either first or second and then get 2-3 more in free agency. |
| 12:31 |
Not necessarily Pro Bowl types but good, solid starters like Randy Thomas and Casey Rabach. |
| 12:31 |
Hard to say who will be out there since the rules will change in the uncapped year. |
| 12:32 |
I’m looking for a lot of players to be released and that’s where most of the talent pool will come from. |
| 12:32 |
[Comment From John]
I won’t be shocked if Snyder tries to bring in a new personnel guy for 2010 and bumps Vinny to a non-football role in the organization a la Rich McKay in Atlanta. |
| 12:32 |
That would be great but what makes you think he’ll do that? |
| 12:33 |
[Comment From Scot]
Can you make a guess as to who won’t be here–maybe write about that. I’m thinking Randel El for sure |
| 12:33 |
I will write about it but not until later in the year. |
| 12:33 |
[Comment From John]
Whatever it will take to bring Shanahan to DC, Snyder will do I believe. He’s got everything Dan wants, name, rings, prestige/respect and a long history of productive offenses. |
| 12:33 |
I think that Thomas is gone. |
| 12:34 |
Campbell, probably. |
| 12:34 |
I’ve heard that Gruden is the current front runner because he doesn’t want much FO control, he just wants to coach. |
| 12:34 |
[Comment From John]
He’s done it twice already this decade (Schotty & Gibbs) so it’s not as much of a big deal as most seem to think. |
| 12:35 |
I hope you’re right but I’m not so sure. |
| 12:36 |
Snyder even stuck his nose in with Gibbs here. |
| 12:36 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
John, big difference between Marty and Gibbs in Snyder’s mind. Gruden would be more of the same. |
| 12:37 |
[Comment From John]
True, big difference in Snyder’s mind but he gave it up for both of them and neither was coming off of a (what is shaping up to be) a disastrous season. I’m not a Snyder apologist, but I don’t think he’s stupid. |
| 12:38 |
That’s what is such a head-stratcher to me, John. I know he’s not stupid. |
| 12:38 |
But stupid is as stupid does and having Vinny in charge is stupid. |
| 12:38 |
[Comment From John]
The reason he’s felt we were ‘close’ is because we hovered around .500 and a break or two here and there we could have been a 10 win team so the ‘fan’ in him was convinced we were right there. |
| 12:39 |
Right, so that’s why if you’re not stupid you hire a football guy who can dispassionately evaluate the needs. |
| 12:40 |
And they may have been close but saying that Mike Williams is the answer to your O-line depth just isn’t smart. |
| 12:40 |
[Comment From John]
A 4-12 or 5-11 debacle, especially as ugly as it can become, has to signal that we’re not good enough and the smart businessman in him should see that significant changes need to be made. |
| 12:40 |
You’re laying out a very logical case, John. |
| 12:41 |
And, again, I hope you’re right. But I’ll believe it when I see it. |
| 12:41 |
I have to duck out a little early today. Any predictions for Sunday? |
| 12:42 |
[Comment From John]
Sadly I know the Redskins have been as immune to logic as they have to playoff runs the past 20 years, lol. Let’s hope! Hail! |
| 12:42 |
[Comment From Scot]
Look out for the Chiefs No Huddle on Sunday. Final Score Skins-17 Chiefs 16 |
| 12:42 |
[Comment From John]
Redskins 17-9 on Sunday. |
| 12:42 |
[Comment From Mark Newgent]
Hot dogs again at the buffett |
| 12:43 |
I’m going waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out on a limb and predict that the Skins will break 20 points. |
| 12:43 |
Redskins 21, Chiefs 10. |
| 12:44 |
OK, thanks, gang. Join me for the in-game chat on Sunday live from FedEx Field. |
| 12:44 |
[Comment From Scot]
Thanks all–Thanks Rich. |
