13:00—Finally, the Redskins get the turnover. After Avery caught a pass that would have converted another third down, Horton gets the stick and the ball pops up in the air. It nearly went right back to Avery but it hit the ground and Carlos Rogers pounced on it.

11:00—After nearly taking a sack in the end zone, the Redskins punt it back. After one play, the Rams are in Redskins territory.

9:10—Third and short, the Redskins hold them. The Rams lined up for a fake punt, but the Redskins were alert for it and the Rams called time out. The Redskins still have their regular defense out of the field. Haynesworth made a good charge up the middle and the punt bounced into the end zone.

9:00—After shunning the right side for most of the game last week, the Redskins have gone there with some frequency today with some success.

7:20—Screen pass to Betts for 25. Yes, you read that right, a screen pass.

6:17—Campbell rediscovered his old friend Malcolm Kelly to get a first down on second and 15.

3:58—Redskins call timeout before going for it one fourth and a full yard, maybe a yard and a half. Play of the game coming up here.

3:33—Portis converts with a nine-yard run. The Redskins can move in for the kill here.

2:12—Now facing third and three at the four.

2:00—Play of the game redux. Going for it on fourth and inches at the two. I liked the last call, I’ll only like this one if they make it. The Rams would need to gain about 70 yards with no timeouts.

1:55—He didn’t get it. I don’t like going wide on that play.

1:40—Haynesworth bats down a third-down pass

Horton on Avery to bat down a deep ball on fourth down. Ballgame.

Final
Redskins 9, Rams 7

a win, whoo-hoo but it was butt ugly.
Redskins have major problems on offense in the Red zone, and in my opinion serious issues with the play calling all over the field.
This game should have been a blow out, but it was not…Figure out why and fix it or the Season will be very very long

I agree entirely dr WNC. However, the Redskins consistently moved the ball well until reaching the red zone and this (I’m stating the obvious here) is where the Skins offense becomes utterly anaemic and therefore all-too predictable.

This can only be as a direct result of Zorn’s generally unimaginative play-calling as the Redskins do have the tools to offer a more potent threat. I’d like to see Campbell at least take a shot, at some point, at the end zone on first and/or second down rather than the standard Portis run left play(s). We now have height in the receiving corps with Kelly (who also provides sure-handedness), Mitchell and Thomas. We have a viable slot receiver, we have the threat of Cooley down the middle and, of course, Moss. Add Davis, potentially, to the mix too.

Surely Zorn can devise a red zone scheme to better-use these guys? I think Campbell has the neccesary accuracy to throw into tight coverage and is also better suited to hit a bigger receiver (Campbell quite often throws too high to our smaller receivers, Moss & ARE) but whether Zorn has the same belief or not I don’t know. It certainly doesn’t seem that way, despite his positive rhetoric towards JC. Unless the Redskins resolve their barren production in the red zone though we are indeed in for a long, tough season.

It’s the same problem we’ve had for years. It’s too easy to just say we fall apart in the redzone. We can’t score from outside the redzone either.

They dink and dunk all the way down the field by taking advantage of short slants and screens. Then they get to the redzone, the defense compresses and that stuff isn’t there anymore. So they try the fade that never works or some trickery with Randle El that never works.

It would help if they could occasionally stab the ball into the endzone from 30 yards out. Of course, that requires a reliable offensive line and a QB with the ability to put it on the money. The one thing you can say for Campbell, though, he sure limits the turnovers. That’s not a W if Campbell throws INTs.

Zorn is a weak AFC guy

    he needs to go

    can’t win playing to fine

the NFC East is smash mouth

  5. Steve H says:

I really wanted them to take a shot at the end-zone in their last possession. HELL, they need the practice!!!!
