Washington Times – Redskins go for upgrade:“Looking to upgrade their special teams, the Washington Redskins signed kicker Dave Rayner, a veteran of five NFL teams, and kick returner Dominique Dorsey, the Canadian Football League’s top special teams player in 2008.
Wednesday’s moves followed the January signings of former Chicago and Tennessee long snapper Jeremy Cain and punter Zac Atterberry, who attended camp with the Bears last summer as a rookie from NAIA school Lindenwood (Mo.)”
Comment: Late in the season I advocated getting rid of Danny Smith. It looks like the special teams coach is safe but a few special teams performers may be looking over their shoulders. I would think that Rayner and Atterberry would have to score clear knockouts over Suisham and Plackemeier to get a shot at the kicking and punting jobs.
Still, the competition is good, although it remains to be seen if the two challengers will remain on the roster into training camp. They will have to perform well in minicamp and OTA’s to justify taking up one of the 80 roster spots allowed in camp.
