Is Rock on shaky ground?

News item:

Dorsey signs with Redskins:

Dominique Dorsey, the CFL’s outstanding special-teams player last season, has signed a contract with the Washington Redskins.

‘Congratulations to Dominique on this well-deserved opportunity,’ Argos general manager Adam Rita said in a statement yesterday. ‘He is an amazing person and player who will truly be missed.

Comment: I mentioned this in passing the other day, but this may turn out to be a more significant signing than either the kicker or the punter. Dorsey is an all-around special teams player who is a good returner and can play some running back as well. That’s Rock Cartwright’s role right now. Dorsey is about four years younger and significantly cheaper than Rock. And Dorsey can return punts (he averaged over 10 yards a return in the CFL last year), something that Cartwright can’t do.

All that said, if Dorsey makes the team it probably won’t be at Cartwright’s expense. Rock is just too valuable on special teams and with Jim Zorn needing to have a respectable second season if he’s going to see a third season, I don’t see Cartwright going anywhere.
