Saints’ defense ailing

The New Orleans Saints’ #1 receiver Marques Coltson isn’t the only starter who won’t see action on Sunday when they travel to FedEx Field to play the Washington Redskins.

Three defensive players who started the Saints’ 24-20 win over the Bucs will sit out the Redskins game with injuries.

Linebacker Scott Fujita, who had a game-clinching interception in the fourth quarter, will sit out with a bruised knee. Cornerback Randall Gay and safety Roman Harper have pulled hamstrings and will be held out as well.

The defensive back seven is not considered to be one of the Saints’ strengths, and that is with the entire depth chart healthy. If the Saints go by their depth chart, Chris Reis will start at safety, Aaron Glenn will start at corner. The linebacker listed as Fujita’s backup, Mark Simoneau, also is listed as out with a back injury, so the Saints will be scrambling to fill that spot.

The Saints’ strength on defense is their pass-rushing ends, Charles Grand and Will Smith. If Campbell can is able to get rid of the ball more quickly than he did against the Giants, there could be even more opportunity for the Redskins to move the ball and exploit the Saints’ injuries.

While I’m not inclined to change my prediction of a Redskins loss, it seems that these developments give them a better shot at righting the ship and pulling out a win.
