Saturday game plan: Calling audibles

Colt Brennan, who had an impressive pro debut last Sunday, may taking a step up the Washington Redskins depth chart on Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills. It is likely that he, not Todd Collins, will be coming in to the game after Jason Campbell is done for the night.

Before Rainbow Warrior Nation out there goes berserk, be advised that the move would be temporary. Reasoning that Brennan won’t see much action at all once the season starts, Jim Zorn wants to give him some experience against opposing defenders that actually have, you know, a shot at making the team.

I don’t think that Zorn realizes that he is playing with fire here. If Colt comes in and goes six for eight with a touchdown, he’ll have a rally at Redskins Park with tiki torch bearing protesters demanding that Brennan be made the starting quarterback immediately.

Brennan isn’t likely to be in the game soon enough to hand off to Clinton Portis, but Campbell will be. Portis, who saw very limited preseason action in 2207—for that matter, he was as scarce at training camp practices as Rosie O’Donnell is at Weight Watchers meetings—will play against the Bills.

The appearance is likely to be brief. He’ll throw a block, get a carry or two, perhaps catch a pass, and then the pads will come off. If Campbell should throw an interception, Portis will run as fast as he can away from where the ball carrier is heading.
